  1. The DHCP bug in the WRT54G strikes again.....keep that nice GigaFast switch & retire that Linksys boat-anchor router. -JxL ;)
  2. If your IE is not corrupted, this should work but you must follow all of the steps that I am listing. 1- Open IE making sure it is Not already maximised. 2- Using your mouse, stretch the window to maximise size making sure before you do this that the window is not already in the maximised position..You need to do this when it is the regular size (restore) window size. 3- After you stretch the window to the maximise size, close IE. 4- Now open IE and click on the Maximise button. 5- Now close IE again. If you follow the steps exactly, the next time you open IE your windows should open maximised and also, all of your "Open New Window" windows should also open maximised (or to exactly how far you stretched it in Step 2) And always remember to close the main window Last or you'll have to do it all over again. This is rumoured to be fixed in IE7..... -JxL shouts to Tommy G for help on this

  4. One of many problemmos with the "LIVE" series cards has been IRQ assignment; i believe it defaults to IRQ 10 which is often already taken by a video card or other unfriendly hardware. 2 recommendations: 1- install just the driver from the cd, & trash the rest of the BS on it. -or- 2- try using this driver from kX/LugoSoft, designed solely for the Soundblaster Live! products & their driver issues. http://download.kxproject.lugosoft.com/?file=kxdrv3537-full.exe -JxL
  5. Nice to see the old school still in use; exact same setup here ~! ;) Awesome clarity on these samsungs; size is an issue of course, damn thing must be 36" deep at least -JxL
  6. My experience with Verizon (Bell Atlantic) years ago tells me the Verizon software is probably affecting your system, it's a memory hog loaded with bugs & funky .dll files. Verizon dsl software just plain sucks. You do NOT want or need the verizon software. Your router (Westell 2200, it is most likely) will automatically do all the dialup tasks. If that does not fix it, could be the PPPOE settings are wrong/corrupt; router misconfiguration; NIC sharing an unavailable IRQ, or, if unprotected against them, you've got a massive spyware/virus/trojan infection already. hope this helps- JxL
  7. The BEFSR41 is notorious for its connectivity problems. If you haven'y already, download latest firmware for it: http://www.linksys.com/download/firmware.asp?fwid=183 -JxL

  14. So many factors are present on the browser issue...anything from chat programs to anti-virus suites can & do affect different setups, especially in the tcp/ip settings. People call me a raving lunatic when they see i still use IE5. In my setups here, IE6 has been a ridiculous crashing heap of dung; while others find it to be the bees knees. Firefox was given a fair chance here, but right now it seems unfinished & buggy. Speeds were not affected at all from it. The biggest drop of speed I had was after giving this box the /fdisk & installing XP Pro. Downstream speed dropped to less than half of W2k's speed. (slight imporvement after some tweaking tips on this site.) Many 3rd party programs which any unsuspecting user may install, can & do alter/corrupt your existing tcp/ip stack. AOHell is notorious for this, followed closely by its' equally horrible evil twins MSN messenger & Yahoo chat. Until pipe speed is safer from 3rd party tcp/ip hijackers, i will be browsing these forums in IE5 (optional radio bar of course, lol) & chatting with friends on NexTel
  15. Quality of Service (QoS) features allow user control of traffic flowing through router. The router will let you configure the priority value based on the IP address (source or destination) or IP address range (using a net mask). the traffic type (UDP, TCP, ICMP etc.) and the port number or port range. As many or a few values as necessary to identify the specific traffic may be defined e.g. UDP only, all traffic to this IP etc. hope this helps ~! -JxL
  16. Welcome back & enjoy~!!! :D -JxL
  17. Sept. 1997....bought all parts at a computer fair in topsfield, mass. from a shady character with a tractor-trailer full of parts: Case: Acer Mobo/CPU: mobo was never known; CPU was a horrific 1st generation Pentium100 mhz. RAM: 2x16mb SDRam.. HD: ~800 Mb. & very slowwwwwww lol Audio: Turtle Beach Video: Acer on-board if i recall; it was total gypsy Modem: originally a 14.4 external; big upgrade to 56k right before we dropped it of the roof at my job ( 8 stories ).... Signs of the Times: AOL 2.0 was all the rage... Prodigy Internet was still in business... Netscape was preferred over IE... Millions of Win95 users hacked by BackOrifice due to a default file-sharing setting in Win95... Thank God, time marches on ~! ;) -JxL
  18. Indeed yes, i just sold one of these fine units on ebay for 250.00 the ADIT 600 from CarrierAccess, inc. http://www.carrieraccess.com/products/index.cfm/fa/adit600.htm -JxL
  19. Just a side note on the MSCONFIG topic....anyone running Win2K like me (stubborn social deviant XP refugees), you can load & install the very useful little tool Msconfig.exe which was loaded into 98, ME, XP but left out our beloved 2k. All it takes, is copy the executable from any final version of XP & paste it into your C:WINNTsystem32 directory...simple & yes it Does Work~! I was lazy & put the *.exe right on the desktop....works great -JxL

    hp

The files Killwind.exe, Terminator.exe, Cloaker.exe, Spawn.exe and Fondlewindow.exe are part of the Backweb program that HP installs on all Pavilion PC's & now on all Compaqs. Backweb enables HP to connect directly to a PC while it is online (simply connected to an ISP - doesn't matter if the browser is open or not) so that it can "push" content and program updates. Unless you are using BackWeb for news content, i recommend un-installing it. It is often a serious resource hog, in most cases it is also advertising adware, it slows down your Internet connection (unacceptably if you connect by modem), and it has the potential for sending out information from your PC. -JxL accolades to donquonzo for help on this
  22. Most excellent speed, i am floored that is from Verizon .... up here in Boston they are the hands-down winner of D amn S low L ines cheers~! -JxL
  23. indeed, the elusive Holy Grail of speed is still broadband's pathetic upload pipes....i will trade 3 Mbs down for 1 up... :-| -JxL
  24. Finally the brainiacs at the major router co.'s seem to have a good handle on DoS attack protocols; only 3 or 4 years ago we had outrageous DoS attacks on EFNet resulting in the shutdown of at least 15 servers & almost as many permanent de-links. Undernet users know this scene all too well also. So far this year, not 1 server has de-linked due to the packet kiddies. Gotta love technology :D I've seen several products from Cisco & 3Com, some type of "D0S Filter" that installs in front of the router. Check out TippingPoint's IPS (Intrusion Prevention System): http://www.tippingpoint.com/index.html prices range from $1200. to over $10,000. -JxL
