i wouldn't take that to the bank, even though Comcast has the bankroll to update the outdated & floundering Adelphia...provided they dont embezzle all the cash like Adelphia's principals did

"Hackers" - - intelligent, quiet, information junkies with a constant urge to find out classified, privileged or supressed info ("you're not supposed to know this stuff!"); ranging from government cover-ups to aunt Berth'a visa card number. "Cracker" - - also intelligent but are of the code-junkie breed; writing small programs (cracks) that disable or exploit a legitimate software's registration module, to save losers like me a lot of money at Comp USA....lol -JxL

This Windows2000 defect happens a lot on my machine (used to anyways). Most often caused by a bad shutdown , physical errors on the hard drive or bad memory module. Could be a dozen other things causing it, of course....bottom line is that your boot record got corrupted & you need to boot up with Windows2000 boot disks (4 in the set). Ususally the "REPAIR" screen is useless for this, just let the boot program load all the way & run windows from your HD , not the CD when it prompts you to select ... if you need the boot disks go here: http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm hope this helps... -JxL

I had the Pro DSL setup back in the day when Verizon was known as "Bell Atlantic" & it was awesome. Verizon has done a remarkable job at screwing up what once was a great DSL provider....anyways, only issues i can remember is make sure you have those tel-line filters installed that they include with the modem & make sure there is a 'dummy' ip in your tcp/ip settings box (192.168.1.1 or similar)...but to get down to brass tacks, Verizon has been plagued with poor speeds & outages for years, so it may be a lost cause -JxL

Your memory is bad or incompatible with the mobo. Generic memory sticks will also cause this error. If it is the memory, usually Windows XP Setup won't even start... the real-mode part of setup (with the blue background) will hang at "Setup is starting Windows..." just before the EULA. If not, you'll usually get file copy errors during setup... with a message that tells you the disc may be dirty. The problem is data corruption in the memory, which means the file that ends up on the hard drive doesn't match the original on the disc. Try slapping a name-brand memory board in it, as most manufactured PC's are equipped with second-rate trash. Also, the Realtek chipset NIC card (onboard NIC, or a PCI NIC) are known to cause this BSOD too. Removing the PCI NIC/disabling the onboard and using a 3COM NIC will solve el problemmo. Hope this helps

You obviously lost your boot record or it has been corrupted by a virus or even a bad shutdown. Easiest way to restore the boot record is to start the machine using XP or 2k boot disks (floppies); if you don't have them available, they can be downloaded from Microsoft i believe. -JxL

About 3/4 of the machines at my work have XP, & i will admit that it is more stable than 2K, especially in the BSOD/crash department; W2k still suffers from various pagefile/kernel stack error bugs especially when running multiple drives using NTFS...i will definitly check out some of those XP tweak sites you guys posted Reality is: soon my old fav 2k will fade into the unsupported bargain-bin at Radio Shack.. -JxL

also possibly a bad hard drive...boot up in DoS if possible (win98 startup floppy is still the cats' ass) & do a scandisk; otherwise it is probably a boot sector issue that was mentioned by the other posters. hope this helps- -JxL

This very well could be any of the 12 or so versions of the W32/SOBER-*@mm hijackers; the German text is a dead giveaway, as most of these originated from Germany & similar virii-producing countries. Try running a few of the "stinger" programs from McCafee or Norton, possibly this will fix it.

You would think the geniuses at Symantec would get all the bugs fixed after all these years; I've given Norton a fair chance from 'ver. 2.5' all the way to 'Symantec Corporate Enterprise Version' on my server...nothing has changed & have heard great things about this new "Avast" (spelling?) & am going to try it. Norton, you are the weakest link ~! -JxL
