  1. Looks like a simple case of too low a buffering setting; Win Media player: tools->options->performance=set your connection speed to match your pipe & change 'network buffering' from default (5 seconds) to 20 seconds. QuickTime Player: Select Edit > Preferences > QuickTime Preferences When "Connection Speed" is selected, a pull-down list displays available speed settings. Select the maximum speed your computer's Internet connection will allow, best to estimate on the low side here. NOTE: Too high a connection setting in either player will cause stalling/rebuffering Also on QuickTime: 1- Select Edit > Preferences > QuickTime Preferences 2- Select "Streaming Transport" a) The "Auto Configure" button may be pressed that will attempt to automatically determine appropriate settings. as an alternative, or if auto configure does not work, select "Use HTTP, Port ID 80". hope this helps- -JxL
  2. I don't know of any software/chat clients that even come close to AOL/AIM in the number of security hole/exploit/bug problems over the years....& like someone stated in earlier post, the install dumps tons of files & registry entries that stick around after /uninstall :( Ebert & Ebert give AIM 2 thumbs down~!~! -JxL
  3. Assuming you're running XP.......Yes, the wonders of XP just keep coming...... Could be the Buffer Overrun exploit found in XP's Shell32 (explorer). http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=27d02af5-a2e1-4e25-9d16-502886161a35 This fix applies to:
  4. You have a corrupt TCP stack. You need to run this fix: http://www.hometownohio.com/faq/files/WinsockXPFix.exe Let me know if that doesn't work....but I'm almost sure it will. -JxL
  5. Certainly you can merge the two partitions, use Partition Magic 8 to make one nice big C: drive...also check the pagefile setting, make sure its not set at 37 GB...i think it should be set at 1.5 times your physical memory size (i may be wrong).... Using WINXP's "Extend Volume Wizard" won't work because the drive is your Primary active/boot partition. -JxL
  6. You can try locking down the speed of your LAN card. To correct this problem in WINDOWS XP 1. Go to Start> Control Panel > and select 'network connections' 2. Right click on your network card (for 2000 and XP only) and select 'properties' 3. Choose the 'configure button' 4. Under the 'advanced' tab you will see two boxes; 'property' and 'value' Note: Depending on the type of LAN card you are using the headings in the Property box will be slightly different 5. Select each heading in the 'Properties' box until the 'Value' box displays the speed of your Ethernet card (it will look like this: Auto-Negotiation, 10Mb Full, 100 MB Half, etc..). You want to select '10mb Full Duplex' Keep clicking OK until you get to the desktop. Your computer may ask you to reboot depending on the version of Windows you are running. shoutouts to Conf123 for help on this one -JxL

  11. Some firewalls definitly cause that error, especially the ridiculous XP firewall from SP2...simply disable & retest -JxL

  14. Win2000 Professional has proven far superior here...XP just does not like me & my hardware ;) -JxL
  15. FF has potential to be my fav; seems too new & incompatible with the MS-soaked internet of today.... IE6 ? a buggy, bloated & top-heavy headache for me; i will have to say IE5 remains my fav browser (followed close by Netscape 3.0) -JxL
  16. I've got my first boat anchor on display at work in the server room, as a hilarious museum piece next to the humming data racks...Pakkie-Bell 286 loaded with 12mb ram, 680Kb drive, a:/ AND b:/ drives, Win3.11 for Workgroups & the "Hackers' Paradise" AOL 1.0....i think we ran an external 14.4 modem too. Ain't it great that some things don't stay the same ~! -JxL
  17. Sounds to me like the typical XP corrupted winsock. A common problem these days on this OS. It is caused by many issues ranging from incompatible software to an incomplete or bad install. Some firewall installs are reported to be at fault as well. Try this winsock fix, it has worked for me on a few machines at work: http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/OS-Enhancements/WinSock-XP-Fix.shtml Hope this helps -JxL

    weird error

Microsoft reports many bugs with this useless add-on...here is one of at least a dozen known issues: "Explorer.exe and other applications may crash or be closed by Date Execution Prevention when opening a DIVX movie file or opening a folder using thumbnail view in explorer containing such a file"... Full uninstall/disable instructions here: http://www.mvps.org/marksxp/WindowsXP/SP2/common.php -JxL
  19. It is amusing to see this pathetic little dictator trying to play the nuclear weapon poker game 50 years after the cards were dealt by Russia & USA...Obviously N.Korea hopes we call their bluff, and restore diplomatic relations (including of course plenty of US $aid$ ....) The intention here is not to launch a couple of 2nd-rate missiles that might make it half-way across the Atlantic; it is a last resort call for help to save his bankrupt, starving & diseased country. just some thoughts...maybe i'm a little crazy hheheh :haha: -JxL
  20. A fellow IT junkie recently informed me that MS is allowing up to 3 separate installs on each program/suite. I don't know about XP as i havent tried this, but I recently installed an already-activated copy of Office XP Professional on 2 totally different boxes & they both registered/activated by MS via internet right after installation completed. Such generosity, Mr. Gates....... -JxL
  21. Ok i'll give up the scotch & cigarettes this week & send some cash-ola (yea right~!) Paypal donation is on the way my brother :D -JxL
  22. Try this official MSDOS boot procedure for XP from Microsoft---it says to use SmartDrv which I was unaware of http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;307848 -JxL
  23. This device 'Microsoft Tun Miniport Adapter ' seems to be causing hardware & internet connex problems of many types. This component is part of IPv6. IPv6 appears to be available with SP2, but may also have been available via an earlier service pack or hotfix. If you're not using IPv6 (I assume you wouldn't be), you can uninstall it by executing the following command at a command prompt: ipv6 uninstall If IPv6 was installed at the time of execution, you will see... 'Uninstalling... A reboot is required to complete this action.' Restart your PC to complete the process, as advised. With IPv6 uninstalled, you may be able to remove 'Microsoft Tun Miniport Adapter ' from Device Manager. To prevent the service from starting up during Windows' boot, delete the following registry keys: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMControlSet001Servicestunmp HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMControlSet002Servicestunmp HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicestunmp Let me know if this helped shoutout to old friend stebie for help on this -JxL
  24. XP setup has proven to be a Royal pain in the Arse.....My suggestions: 1. make sure your internet connection is unplugged/disabled. Sasser worm just loves fresh installations... 2. run FDISK from a command prompt & create active partition (C:) after formatting. 3. download XP setup discs from Microsoft http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;310994&spid=1173&sid=global 4. run the setup disks & cross your fingers. this procdure worked for me on a hung blue-screen XP install recently, good luck ~! ;) -JxL
  25. Your best bet anywhere right now is Cable broadband for sure. With RCN offering 10Mbps & many others such as Comcast offering insane speeds to attract customers, usually 50-75$ will make dust of any T-1. Satellite/wireless being still too restrictive on big speed gets them 2 thumbs down. DSL....got to pay big money for any amount of acceptable speed IF it is available in your area. Until the Electric companies start selling modems on their huge copper pipes, cable is the best deal in my opinion. -JxL
