  1. Actually, RTB i am positive that the silly upload speed is caused by my registry settings, as i was getting 500-650 Kbps BEFORE i was plagued with the dreaded "10053 software caused connection abort" winsock bug. After succesfully modifying the registry to rid the bug, upload pipe went south also. ============================== All around 9:30 a.m. EST.... :::.. 2. RCN has been this speed-junkie's ISP for almost 4 years. What i like about RCN is their proud & blatant claim to be the "fastest broadband available to the home user". While other ISP's were installing throttlers, speed caps & data transfer limits, RCN provided customers with a 5 Mbps upgrade, then released the current 7 Mbps "Mach-7" modem, with no hike in the monthly price. Advertised upload speeds remain at a respectable 800 Kbps; although i have not been able to get higher than ~300 Kbps. This is a definite drawback to me, as i run fileservers on EFNet & this upstream speed provided with the awesome 7 Mbps downstream, proves embarrasing if not pathetic at times. The top-shelf bundled package "Power CPI Plus" includes unlimited local, regional & long distance phone service; 10 Mb webstorage, 5 email boxes, modem rental, webmail access & optional static ip (nice). Also, Digital cable service & 4 premium channels on the idiot box. i currently pay $169.00/month for all this service. Service has been bulletproof, one incident last year caused 5 or 10 minutes of signal downtime. 2 thumbs up to RCN's products, premium except for the upload pipe; I can live with that i suppose.... -JxL
  3. Yet another router headache they forgot to mention in the user's guides...... Appears to me that one of two firewall settings (assuming your router has these options) may need tweaking: 1- URL filtering feature is enabled ( lets you block access to Web sites based on text strings )--Disable it. 2- LAN and/or WAN filtering is enabled, ( allows or blocks traffic flowing in or out of the router by source address, protocol type, and port number )--Also Disable if present. Regarding the DMZ issue: This is a common bug in many router models i've seen. Make sure you have the latest software/firmware for your box & remember to put your internal ip into the DMZ settings. anyone got any Tylenol? -JxL

  5. Linksys BEFSR11, 41 and 81 routers seem to be causing this a great deal with the latest firmware version..... If you have the BEFSR11 or 41 router, you need to run the 1.45.7 firmware to solve this problem. You can download the known good Linksys 1.45.7 firmware for both the BEFSR11 and BEFSR41 V2 routers at ftp://ftp.linksys.com/pub/befsr41/befsr_fw_1457.zip You also need to go into the router and disable UPnP and QoS if it's there and you should ONLY have TCP/IP checked in the network properties for your Internet connection. hope this helps el problemmo -JxL
  6. IF you are connecting through DSL using PPPoE, login to the router : (http://192.168.1.1 -----Leave the "User Name" field blank and type "admin" as "Password" then click "OK") & check these settings: 1- Check off "Enable" beside the "PPPoE" header. 2- Enter your "User Name" (for your user name make sure you include your ISP's domain as part of it. I.E.: for Verizon it would be userid_at_verizon.net) and "Password" as supplied by your ISP. 2- Check off "Enable" under "Connect on Demand", then click on "Apply". 3- Reboot & crack open a tall cool one. If you're not using DSL, ignore all except #3. -JxL
  7. Go ahead & install those Video drivers, they will work...."Verified" indicates that your card manufacturer has not slept with ol Billy Gates yet. cheers~! JxL
  8. You will most likely have an option to disable the Onboard video in the BIOS, or possibly a jumper on the board to disable it. There should also be the option to initialize Onboard, PCI, or AGP port for video output. Most, if not all, motherboards with onboard video will automatically disable the onboard once booted up with a video card inserted into the AGP or PCI port. If it does not (which is rare) then you go into your BIOS and disable the video there, if available. -JxL
  9. Definitly avoid any ATI/All-in-Wonder cards & also anything from Pinnacle, as my experience has showed them both to be rubbish. They both have installation issues (especially on XP) and the unique added ability to disable/corrupt various programs on your machine after install. NVidia/GForce is the way to go. For Video Capture cards, Data Translation's Broadway Pro i recommend highly. http://www.b-way.com/home.html -JxL

  13. Welcome to the speed freak consortium I am in your area, just west of Boston but on RCN service. Regarding the painfully slow upstream speed from Comcast, you're preaching to the choir on this one; i've been graced with similar embarrasing upload speeds. Tweaking helps little on the upload side, sadly. at least we can come here and whine about it hehehh keep the faith- -JxL

  17. ...Always find it funny how remote places like West Overshoe,Kansas pump speeds like +8.0 Mbps; but in supposed technology hubs such as here in Boston , I would need an act of congress to get anything close to those speeds hehheh -JxL
  18. One thing i've noticed, having cable since 1999 (mediaone; now RCN) is ridiculous inconsistency of speeds such as you are getting on Cox; As more & more users switch to these already saturated ISP's, we speedfreaks will suffer the result which i believe is Prime-Time throttling of line speed...Although downloading at 4.9mb is still fun at 3:30 a.m. -jxL
  19. Since the introduction of Windows XP, a new problem has arisen involving the drive not being detected AFTER installing and then uninstalling recording software like Easy Cd Creator. This problem is caused by a couple of registry entires that must be deleted before the drive can be detected. If this situation applies to you, then please read this http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q314060 and follow the instructions posted in this article to remove those registry entries. Once completed, just reboot pc and drive(s) should be detected during bootup. Hail Win2k ~!~!~! -JxL

  22. impressive upload speed for cable; i cannot get faster than ~360 but the downstream makes up for it. keep the faith- JxL
  23. Honestly, i have not heard one positive thing regarding Satellite/wireless connections...My opinion after 8 years in the business, this technology is weak, inferior & probably will fade out in a year or two, especially on the ISP end of things. With ridiculous cable modem speeds available now & the emerging fiber-optic DSL sporting 30Mb pipe speeds, the death knell has sounded for satellite for sure. cheers- JxL

  25. Being in N.Colorado, he definitly has the advantages of a relatively new cable network [in comparison with the 25+ year old crap here on the east coast....along with the fact there is not 1.2 million users sucking on the pipe surely results in those awesome speeds. Last time i logged into Verizon's pitiful DSL at a friends house , I swear I heard this greeting: "Welcome to your Lagged & Saturated Network".. peacee -JxL
