  1. My gut tells me that this is surely an overheat problem, since it is plugged in 24-7 when it freezes at home. Seems it is not powered up long enough on the road to cause heat issues. 2nd fix i would try, is convert your hard-drive to FAT32 if it is currently NTFS. NTFS+XPHome=mucho problemmos. Plus, NTFS does not mesh well with a ton of various accessories & hardware, such as that WI-FI. Lastly, i suspect a failing or mismatched memory card. I would replace them with name-brand RAM to the maximum your board will handle. hope this helps- JxL

    deploy

To install softwares through GPO, Follow these four steps in order to accomplish the task 1. Creating the Software Distribution Point (SDP). 2. Setting Software Installation properties. 3. Creating New Package for softwares. 4. Setting Software Package Properties WAY too much info to post, check out this paper on the subject: http://www.helpline4it.com/lab_practices-d160.html -JxL

  4. i'm not a fan of "all-in-one" codecs as they can & will mess things up in the .dll department. Definitly download & install these 2 latest specific .*avi codecs: XviD .AVI Codec: http://www.xvid.org DivX .AVI Codec: www.divx.com -JxL
  5. Trash them both & move into VanBuren's basement lol :evil6: hmmm...Comcast, despite its regional saturation issues, is definitly the better bang for the buck...not too far in the near future, i see *DSL services becoming extinct, as it can not compete with the speed, reliability & low cost of cable pipes. -JxL

    Subnet

You can make over 200 subnets (may be wrong on the #) on any LAN simply using low-cost hubs or switches. The gateway will remain the same as it is on the LAN; your existing firewall is all you need, assuming DHCP is being used. let me know ok -JxL
  7. any chance of ol' JunkieXL getting a copy or a url? ;)
  8. yes, every morning when i grab my aluminum Cisco briefcase & the usual handful of cd-roms, it is almost screaming out GEEK to the masses, but it is all good with me, i admit it & dont really mind because most 'geeks' i've met have been real cool. This I.T. job was never planned, one day i helped the bossman with a minor problem on his Packie-Bell 386 & the usual & common "you're a GENIUS~!" we all hear in the trade launched me to a new living. I didn't mind fixing/helping people with their machines until i started this job. Now, it seems all that i ever do is fix computers, it is rare that i answer my phone after work  -JxL
  9. I've been looking for a program that deals with RAM & related issues (seems like forever but probably a few weeks), thanks guys- these progs seem to be exactly what i need ...except i just realised i do not personally use WinXP...anyone know if it is W2K compatible? many thanks -JxL

  11. Netmasta is on the money, i think. Only advertising we see here in eastern Mass is Comcast & Verizon, with Verizon being the big pimp with snail mail, radio & tons of TV ads pushing their mediocre-at-best DSL. I do miss RCN already -JxL
  12. i wish this was the case heh as i stated earlier, DSL setups act just like a LAN with a router & a hub/switch; your static IP is visible & very traceable to your gateway. The DSL router however masks your machine with a dummy ip. A bit more secure than your average cable modem setup & it is of a different protocol but strill reliable. peace~~ -JxL
  13. The properties of a DSL connex allow users to enter a dummy ip, reason being most DSL setups use PPoE/Virtual private network; in essence your machine is on a mini-"LAN" when using a DSL modem as the real ip is stored & broadcast from the modem/router. Glad to be of help guys -JxL
  14. I recommend anyone interested in the subject to hear the views from the hackers themselves. For anyone who has not watched it, here it is: Cult of the Dead Cow's "Disinformation" documentary; contains interviews & commentary by cDc members 'Sir Dystic', 'Deth Vegetable', 'Tweety Fish' & other masked/disguised members. You need quicktime player & it is about 12 minutes playing time. http://www.jeah.net/~2ndstyle/cult_of_the_dead_cow_-_disinformation.mov -JxL
  15. DSL hanging/stalling can usually be fixed by putting a dummy ip address in your tcp/ip properties (192.168.1.10 or similar subnet/LAN ip) ; at least this was an issue with Bellatlantic/Verizon setups on Win98 , give it a try ~! -JxL
  16. I will never quite understand the appeal of phishing/cracking a random free email account such as Yahoo, MSN,Hotmail, etc. e-mail boxes i cannot find exciting. i must have 15+ email boxes ,from all my shell accounts, etc. 13 of them i've never used. Instead of browsing a 'loser @yahoo.com's phished mailbox full of the same spam & virii that we all get, these people with skills enough to fashion this pathetic phish scam should use that skill on some real hacking; or get a day job & shave their backs.
  17. I have all my receive-window values set at the same number. There may be more than 3 if you look in the tcp-ip/parameters/adapters & **//interfaces keys. of course i run W2k but the registry settings are very similar to XP, in the tcp-ip area. -JxL
  18. Indeed it is , my friend I believe Mr.VanBuren is close to that pipe speed.... hehe -JxL
  19. IF that URL/Link/ftp for IE7 comes back online, email me the addy please -JxL [email protected] [email protected]
  20. "You got 10 right! Excellent, you have the makings of a proper propeller head." a bit Too easy...here's Bonus question #11~! 11. Name the largest standard circuit unit of capacity, which consists of 155,500 Kbps (equal to 155 Mbps). Anyone here have a link to a good i.q.test? thanks in advance ~! -JxL
  21. I've used Broadway Pro for 5 years, ripping & converting mostly music videos from vhs & will encode to everything from mpeg-1 to dvd; highly recommended package even comes bundled with ULead Mediastudio Pro. http://www.b-way.com/ -JxL
  22. ZoneAlarm's "security suite", in my experience, is a bloated pile of rubbish; however i did like the older versions of ZoneAlarm (ZoneAlarm Pro); this new security suite seems to install more malware than it blocks & is very tedious to uninstall, as it plants files in almost as many directories as the pitiful RealPlayer. Like RayRay909 says, get Kaspersky :D -JxL
  23. i would increase the pagefile size to 500-700Mb (initial size) for each hard drive. Add your RAM size to the initial size , and that is the maximum pagefile size for each drive. These settings are in Control panel->System->Advanced->Performance window. -JxL
  24. thanks to all you Speed Guru's & your tweaks/fixes/ideas...has made a "bit" of improvement tonight from this morning's flat-out embarrasing speeds. Comcast told me this is a 6.0 Mbps/800 Kbps cable pipe...so it's right there with it. cheers~! :::..
