jer2911tx Posted May 19, 2005 CID Share Posted May 19, 2005 if there was a way to change the booktype setting to write the dvds as dvd rom, i would recommend that. i did that on my desktop's lite-on burner, and it changes the dvd +r booktype to make regular dvd players think the dvd +r is a dvd rom so it is more compatible. i don't think you can make this change on this drive, at least i haven't found anyone with the information, yet. i have the gca 4040n in my laptop, and it is much quicker than the desktop (laptop cpu is 2.66 ghz, desktop cpu is 800 mhz) i use dvd shrink and dvd decrypter for all my backups with the gca 4040n and i have had no problems at all with dvd +r, the gca 4040n is much less picky with blank dvd +r media than the lite-on burner is. pretty much every type of blank dvd +r i have tried has worked in the 4040n. for your problems, i would suggest getting good dvd +r media, preferrably something made in japan or singapore, find dvd identifier on the web and download it and check your media, if it is cmc-xxx-xxx it is most likely crap. do a yahoo search for how to find good dvd media, or search in this and other dvd forums you can't use dvd -r in the 4040n, so spend the money for decent media like ritek or verbatim dvd +r i would also suggest trying to use dvd shrink and decrypter together and see if that solves your problem of dvd +r working to backup. jer2911tx Posted May 19, 2005 CID Share Posted May 19, 2005 Welcome to The Forum jer2911tx thanks. i was doing a yahoo search on my gca-4040n burner trying to figure out if it supported changing the booktype setting and came across y'all, so i thought i'd register. i'm not completely computer illiterate, but i don't pass up an opportunity to get help from where i can. and if i can relay info from another source to help out, that's just a bonus give me a holler if LG ever gets around to supporting changing the booktype setting on the 4040n burner to make it more compatible with household dvd players thx

Azag Posted May 20, 2005 CID Share Posted May 20, 2005 I would look for and download Adaptec Aspi Check (it's in a little package by them run a google search for it then run the program aspichk.exe affter installing it this may or may not help since it checks that all needed ASPI Layer components/drivers that might be needed are present but alas I think this is mostly for CD burning but I could be wrong on that. All peepnklown suggestions are very useful and probably should clear the issue up. But if not also know that if before installing Nero you had another DVD burning software on your machine at one time especially thiungs like Roxio software (not hte one built into Win XP) or InCD as you said even if you uninstalled these or any others or run a CD emuleator to mount CD's link games such as haing a virtual HD with Daemon Tools then your problem is most likely from these since changes in the regisrt are not always cleaned out properly from uninstalling (a good safe registry cleaner app might help like AA Tools or Registry First Aid for example). I had a big problem even seeing installed CD and DVD burner drives when a file was uninstalled and a similar program from another company was installed as a replacement and had to delete a reg key manually to fix it which re-generated the proper key through default windows settings on next reboot in fact I believe InCD may have been the culprit that time if memory serves. I found instructions for this bizarro fix through extensive web searching w/ google (wish I remembered the site to give you a link to) but it made my drives which where unmountable and invisible to My Computer and before that even uninstalling from Control Panel and trying to reinstall or revert to earlier drivers was useless as was updating to the newest firmware and drivers! Needless to say this weird unique problem was a bitch to figure out and fix and took me several hours or trial and error and research but I fixed it. Also remember if you do need to clean your regisrty or delete or change a key or keys always be careful as hell and back up your registry key or keys or besttter yet the whole registry if your not used to such things because a small mistake there can do major damage even causing your machine not to boot any more in worst case senarios so do be careful. Hope my experience and hints helped a little too and didn't further confuse the situation any. Maybe reinstall, update or try rolling back drivers or firmware updating for DVD as peepnklown mentioned before looking at the more obscure culprits I mentioned. Anywayz good luck and let us know if you get anywhere with it.... Peace, Azag

hurricane_floyd Posted October 17, 2005 CID Share Posted October 17, 2005 Sounds like Nero is not fully compatible with your DVD burner. The company will probably want you to fork over more dough for an upgrade, but you may be lucky and there may be a free patch for download.
