Xiile Posted April 30, 2005 CID Share Posted April 30, 2005 Some backstory first... Last week, there was a lightning strike (very) close to my house, and this damaged the cable temporarily. The cable company came up yesterday and fixed this. When I finally got onto the Internet, I found that I was downloading a bit slow. Oh how right I was... <img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v357/Xiile/56kcable.jpg" alt="Image hosted by Photobucket.com"> :::.. Download Stats ..::: Connection is:: 76 Kbps about 0.1 Mbps (tested with 579 kB) Download Speed is:: 9 kB/s Tested From:: https://testmy.net/ (main) Test Time:: Fri Apr 29 2005 23:19:59 GMT-0400 (Eastern Daylight Time) Bottom Line:: 1X faster than 56K 1MB download in 113.78 sec Diagnosis: May need help : running at only 3.96 % of your hosts average (ptd.net) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-LSWEM2R3H And the Upload test doesn't seem to want to start. What fun! But seriously though, I'm getting really frustrated with this whole mess. I've tried everything... TCPOptimize, CableNut, CCleaner, virus scanning, adware scanning, defragmenting, switching cables around on the router... I can't see what's wrong. At all. Help appreciated... hurricane_floyd Posted April 30, 2005 CID Share Posted April 30, 2005 You are probably gonna have to bitch at your cable company until they come back out and really fix the line.
netmasta Posted April 30, 2005 CID Share Posted April 30, 2005 If the lightning strike damaged the cable, your modem may also have been somewhat damaged if it was connected. You may want to have them check your modem.
Xiile Posted April 30, 2005 Author CID Share Posted April 30, 2005 It might not be the modem. The other two computers on the network run perfectly fine. Just mine is slow.

Then it's probably something with your computer. Read the topic in my sig for more info.

xs1 Posted May 1, 2005 CID Share Posted May 1, 2005 Same thing happened to me. The wiring is not going to be your problem ( methinks) Try replacing the NIC card itself. It may be, if not defiantly fried.

Xiile Posted May 2, 2005 Author CID Share Posted May 2, 2005 I got it fixed! It turned out to be my NIC card after all (thanks .s1!). Thanks to everyone who helped me out
xyther4523 Posted May 2, 2005 CID Share Posted May 2, 2005 yah, sometimes it is the NIC card, ive blown probably about 5 NICs and 2 routers.. i would transfer files throughout my LAN and sometimes the NIC would start going faster than it was capable of (like i have a 100mbit NIC in and then transfers would hit 155mbit and then everything would crash, the NIC and the port on the router i was using, suprisingly, the NIC on the comp i was sending to didnt crash, but i had to restart its comp). i hate when that happens..im running out of NICs and money :
