Guest helloimtim Posted June 9, 2005 CID Share Posted June 9, 2005 What about reseting your settings to default and seeing what happens. Or have you tried that. I also am guessing you did all the scans for nastys while in safe mode.
misery Posted June 9, 2005 Author CID Share Posted June 9, 2005 Yeah, i've done scans with spybot, microsoft anti-spy, ad-ware, did virus scans. i've done a hard reset on my router and modem. See it isn't even my upstream that gets me frustrated with comcast. it's my downstream thats constantly really pathetic..
Guest helloimtim Posted June 9, 2005 CID Share Posted June 9, 2005 Cable can be tough. Sharing a line with countless others. VanBuren is the tweak master with that. Give him a shout. Even though cable is nice I really prefer my dsl. But I only use the net to kill time.
misery Posted June 9, 2005 Author CID Share Posted June 9, 2005 Tell me about it... Though i've heard by the end of september comcast will be upgrading it's GOLD TIER members to 14mbs/4mbs. For no cost at all.. which i'm a tad excited about.. It's just upsetting having to wait till 1-2am to enjoy my cable. and having to pay $65monthly for crap!@
VanBuren Posted June 9, 2005 CID Share Posted June 9, 2005 hey misery try this update to latest NIC driver and bypass your router connect direct to modem via ethernet powercycle modem, leave if off for atleast 30 seconds now test speed again if its still not good, try another LAN cable between your modem and PC still no good? call your ISP and let them check your modem signals VanBuren

VanBuren Posted June 9, 2005 CID Share Posted June 9, 2005 yea, you can try finetuning the settings to go faster as most ppl understand the settings i made is a estimate, its impossible to make perfect files for each ISP and caps. also some routers cant handle large RWIN

tennesseeme Posted June 24, 2005 CID Share Posted June 24, 2005 whoa, im interested in comcasts 14/4, im currently on their 6800/768 connection, not bad for 55bux a month AFTER The promo. I truly have NO need for this connection type or speed, it's just a crutch, it's nice to know the bandwidth is there. I have played with running gaming servers for Half Life: Counterstrike and HL2 Counterstrike: SOURCE, and Half Life DoD, I have better results now that i have more upload. With 14/4 i could run a great gaming server. It's been good serving files out in iRC, get lots of access and lots of gigs served even with the 6800/768. i'll be calling up local tech to find out when it's available, could u link to a source to this claim? I know some folx that work in Comcast Support, in knoxville, they say they know nothing of it. they aren't in Tech though. Just customer service. I've had best preformance using a good router, im not trusting enough to go wireless. I can get all kinds of free access downtown, i don't want that happening to me. dcsurf Posted June 26, 2005 CID Share Posted June 26, 2005 Hello, All First post. I've read the sticky and made quite a bit of progress on my connection speed; however, I have an odd phenomenon which seems to occur when I run the speed test (download). When d/ling the 2296 kB file, my browser almost always "hangs" at exactly the same point in the process, about 20% on the progress bar. Occasionally, this does not happen and I get much better results (about 4Mbps vs. under 3). Additionally, the other computer on my wireless net never seems to do this, and generally has higher speeds. What caught my attention is the fact that this always seems to occur at almost the same point in the download. Disabling the progress bar doesn't seem to make any difference in as far as the inconsistencies. Thoughts on what could be causing this? Thanks for your help. dcsurf Posted June 26, 2005 CID Share Posted June 26, 2005 Is that something I can address w/ driver or other software, or would I be better off with a new adapter card? Any suggestions for a good card? Thanks.
tennesseeme Posted June 26, 2005 CID Share Posted June 26, 2005 I have a been a faithful Linksys LNETXv400e user, they are compatible with every operating system. I have had them last for more then a decade. They are inexpensive. I have never had one "chatter" nor have i had one duplex lock.
dcsurf Posted June 27, 2005 CID Share Posted June 27, 2005 Thanks for the recommendation. I installed a Linksys LNE100TX today. Speeds are a bit better, and the "hanging" seems much improved, but it still does it occasionally, still at that same point (20% on 3 MB file, 10% on 6 MB file, etc.) Also, oddly, the other computer on my net (using a wireless connection, whereas mine is wired) still has higher speeds than mine! (older computer, older CPU, less RAM, etc.) Clearly, there is still some problem with my computer itself, or so it would seem. Could it be the cable from wireless router to PC? Any other thoughts? Still only getting about 3400 kbps, whereas I'm paying for 6000. (Other computer regularly hitting 4100) Thanks, again, for any help. falco Posted July 2, 2005 CID Share Posted July 2, 2005 If you have something like Norton Internet Security, disable it while you are doing your download test. Zonealarm hampers a proper test also.
php Posted July 3, 2005 CID Share Posted July 3, 2005 Zonealarm hampers a proper test also. that's not true for everyone... it doesn't affect my tests at all
dcsurf Posted July 3, 2005 CID Share Posted July 3, 2005 I do have Norton and have found it to slow the test considerably, so I have been disabling it. However, the "hanging" problem still occurs, even when disabled. Seems like there's something that happens always right around 600 kB of the download.
