It's kind of random, I think, if you get faster speeds using a different browser; some people do, and some don't. I know that I used to get insanely fast download test scores with IE, but we never really figured out why it did that, though, right, guys? (Some people like CA3LE and shug might remember the awesome-ness that used to be my scores.) But those weren't how fast my actual downloads were going, so when I switched to Firefox, my true download scores came out, but were lower. I'm happy I made the switch, though, but also because browsing is a lot faster with FF, but because of the tabs and all the extensions and stuff. Not to mention IE always used to crash on me every 5 minutes. (Still does.)

I never have the crashes I hear everyone else lament about....maybe it's my intensive maintenace schedule, I keep a lean clean machine......I have done other tests to verify my speeds are accurate, including a large download with elapsed time (to complete the download) to check it against....seems to be right on for me.. I clocked just under 6 min. for this download.

I've always been faster with IE. Tried FF, but it was all the same for me (browsing wise). No pages loaded any faster for me with it, and I didn't put up faster speed tests, so I uninstalled it. I personally find FF to be more inaccurate on speed tests. It gives users a false sense of speed. On a fresh system, not infected with useless garbage like spyware, adware, trojans, etc., IE will dust FF off easily. Hands down. Not to mention all the end users that are not that computer savy. You know...the users that shouldn't be exploring their "Program Files" folder and accidentally deletes an important file from the "Internet Explorer" directory.

With all due respect I just think to many get caught up in speedtests. While yes they are super handy to have and to use we can not forget common sense. If web pages seem slow then run a speedtest. Try to download a few large files and see what your speeds are. Myself I just pick any "trial" ware program that is large. Try it then cancel before the download completes. This site is by far the best for speed tests I have ever seen. In my humble oppinion you just can  not use one speed test to determine the speed of your computer. I think some who run the tests dont clear out the cache and try it a second time and get amazing speeds. In normal surfing and web page loading I find ie about the best. I use maxthon as my normal browser. Got it set up just the way I like it. Only opens a tab when I click my wheel button on my mouse. I tried ff but found it just did not render some of the web pages right. To many plug ins for my personal taste. I agree with organ shifter. No one browser acts the exact same on every computer. Find what works best for you and enjoy. Just my 2 cents.........

Pages load way faster in FF for me...

Tabbed browsing is nice, but not necessary for surfing. I rarely have more than 2 browsing windows open at a time anyway, so my taskbar is never cluttered with opened webpages (1280x1024).

I typically have 20+ tabs open, 26 right now...

All:

SPEED is life,  we all agree on that.  What I always find funny is how much we talk about speed yet,  almost NO web sites upload to you as fast as your connections can download.  At 1-5-9-15 Mps connection simply DOESN'T matter to a web site with fractioned upload bandwidth shared among all the people seeking data at the same time you are.

I mean I love my cox 9/1 Mps setup,  but really,  upgrading from 5 to 9 didn't make much of a difference on the busy sites.  The 1Mps upload is more important to me,  and that always solid 1Mps when tested.  I have Voip & Server in home so I love the upgrade.

PS And it really makes my XBOX hosting fly..  :)

Just my two cents.

So many factors are present on the browser issue...anything from chat programs to anti-virus suites can & do affect different setups, especially in the tcp/ip settings.

People call me a raving lunatic when they see i still use IE5. In my setups here, IE6 has been a ridiculous crashing heap of dung; while others find it to be the bees knees.

Firefox was given a fair chance here, but right now it seems unfinished & buggy. Speeds were not affected at all from it.

The biggest drop of speed I had was after giving this box the /fdisk & installing XP Pro. Downstream speed dropped to less than half of W2k's speed. (slight imporvement after some tweaking tips on this site.)

Many 3rd party programs which any unsuspecting user may install, can & do alter/corrupt your existing tcp/ip stack. AOHell is notorious for this, followed closely by its' equally horrible evil twins MSN messenger & Yahoo chat.

Until pipe speed is safer from 3rd party tcp/ip hijackers, i will be browsing these forums in IE5 (optional radio bar of course, lol) & chatting with friends on NexTel
