Mattisin Posted August 10, 2005 CID Share Posted August 10, 2005 I have cable internet and i was wondering if my long cable from the back of my house to the front over the roof is creating my poor connection. I running at less then half my advertised speed. I think the cable is a 50 foot one.

php Posted August 10, 2005 CID Share Posted August 10, 2005 What is your advertised speed? Is this ethernet cable? If so it should be good for 300 feet or so... read here
Mattisin Posted August 10, 2005 Author CID Share Posted August 10, 2005 No it's coaxil cable. it goes from the back alley to a splitter then a 50 foot coaxil cord to my modem. Advertised 5000kbts.
organ_shifter Posted August 10, 2005 CID Share Posted August 10, 2005 I have cable internet and i was wondering if my long cable from the back of my house to the front over the roof is creating my poor connection. I running at less then half my advertised speed. I think the cable is a 50 foot one. I've used a 50 foot cable before. My speeds were consistantly great. I wasn't on a splitter either. I don't know if you are, but that could cause problems in some instances. If you have a seperate wall jack, you should try running a shorter cable from there straight to the modem. You will receive better signals which, in turn, could increase your speed. Be sure that the cable you're using is at least RG6 certified. Some people use RG5, but too thin a cable will not be able to handle the high speed signal, resulting in slow speeds.

dn0 Posted August 10, 2005 CID Share Posted August 10, 2005 What brand of modem do you have? If It's Motorola, click this link: http://192.168.100.1/signal.html This will tell us some receive and transmit levels and other information. If it is not Motorola, tell us which, there are other ways for a few other modems.

A few other questions What does the cable from the splitter that is not connected to your modem go to? Is the splitter for television signal?I also would use as good a cable as I could get to run over a roof .Can you find a better route? At least under the house eves to protect the cable as much as possible.
