From 650 miles away ( however they calculate that , by the birds flight or by the cable length I dont know but my guess is B line ) , and chances are charters routing and or peering is borked up.  Not knowing any details i could be way wrong.

I would traceroute here to see where the latency is before dismissing anything.

has absolutely nothing to do with charters routing. well, yes it does, but not in this case. it is strictly this site, and yes, 650 miles away. makes absolutely no sense to test from right next door. how often are you downloading anything from your next door neighbot anyway?

FINALLy got a decent result!

Ok a couple things for you here "missmoondog".

A: With the extreme flux. of your speed tests ; Meaning 1.6 Mb one day and 40 the next .. I would say its a problem possibly on your end or with routing. Try a traceroute possibly? Pathping?

2: If you like tests like speedtest net than thats fine. All thoes flash based websites do is make you feel good. There not at all accurate. Testmy.net show your ACTUAL download speed in real world download situations. Flash shows the potential connection at its absolute max with very high overhead buffer. Testmy.nets speed testing method is completely different in the coding.

III: Please review the thread  Here : Difference between Speed test sites.

- In conclusion, Before slandering a website that is providing you Free, unbiased, speed test results in which you took the time to register... Review the facts or enjoy feeling good with other sites over the top inaccurate results.

Thanks for joining!

the simple fact is this, this site DOES NOT work very well with opera, period.

now, i may be able to retract that as since the newest release of opera a few days ago, this site has been much more accurate, so it's either the web coding here (most likely) or opera's coding that is causing it to work correctly.

i can guarantee you there is no problem on my end and don't have a clue where you come up with that conclusion?! i was not slandering this site what so ever. simply stating and showing the facts. who would use a speed site that wasn't free anyway? with all of the flash based sites that show the same exact speeds no matter what browser, i WILL continue to enjoy my over the top inaccurate results. i like that warm fuzzy feeling! :)

Speeds look better now? Especially coming from this, the "most inaccurate test sites there is." as you call it.  Seems pretty good to me for a 18 meg connection.

i know i was originally here complaining about the lack of speed when using the opera web browser, but what ever you folks have done has improved opera's results almost 100% on any machine i test here with. i was easily getting over 20 megs on the faster plan i was on  :)

unfortunately, every time i test using ie, my upload totally blows chunks.  :(

i have down graded my plan since last visit and am now on a slower one, 12/1, but upload is stinking with ie.

just some what of an update here about browsers and this site.

as i mentioned above, don't know what you've done differently to the tests, but opera now usually has the most consistent and higher speed results of any browser i use here. doens't matter if i'm using windows or linux, which it shouldn't anyway.

site does seem to be more consistent when testing through out the day though, which it never seemed to be before.

sorry about jumping down your throats previously.  :(

i would rate this site one of the better speed tests sites now though. :)
