  1. Hi WMMC: My ISP is nts-online.net .I know this one is a branch of the larger nts but it seems to be ran like a franchise where the local owner controls it.I tried a couple of others when I first went online .Some had good reveiws but not such good service. So far I am satisfied with this one.It is only about 125 miles from me. If you have a good local ISP like this one thats what I would get .They are $9.99 a month but if you are located far from them You might not get the same results.
  2. Hi WMMC : I have regular analog too a regular copper POTS line all the way to the Telco. :)Cholla
  3. I am putting a copy of two tests here that was done from HYPERTERMINAL on my computer I have deleted the computer trash you will get with the test so if you do the test expect to see a lot of it.If you are tech enough to read it & know what it means you probably don't need to.The graphs didn't paste just right but basically each drop after the long flat line of asterisks is a load coil on the line.If after this you see a U or V shaped pattern between drops the line has a problem most likely a bad load coil. This test also gives SNR( signal to noise ratio) which should be 25 or above.I hope there are others on dial-up at testmy.net & some of this info helps .It might give DSL users a little useful info too.Cholla THANK YOU FOR CALLING THE SBC MODEM LINE TESTER. PLEASE ANSWER THE FOLLOWING PROMPTS AND YOUR LINE WILL BE TESTED. Last Name
  4. You are right about the time to tweak the system to get this speed & I do test lower a some of the time but that is constanyly improving. One thing that helped is I installed all new phone cables in my home to the NID box. They are 24 gauge C3.If you are on dial-up and can do this it can help.Of course if you already have good wire it won't.I had the SBC tech do a POTS data line quality test.Good Luck if you try to get a data tech like this I spent a lot of time & several calls to SBC before I did.The usual response is WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT ?Inever heard of that test or a sudden transfer to SBC DSL in INDIA.The test can be accessed in hyper terminal the phone # is 1-866-293-6556 This is the number that works for me.It might be different for other areas. You do need to know how to use the HYPERTERMINAL & IT CAN ACT UNPREDICTABLE you may need to restart it a couple of times before it works. It showed 3 load coils on my line(you need to know how to read the graph to show this.Load coils are there to improve voice quality at a distance but are data KILLERS.I haven't done this but you can get a data line without the load coils as a second line if you are willing to pay for it.Cholla
  5. Just wanted to post my speed test.It is pretty good for regular dial-up especially at 28600 ft from the Telco or CO I'm never sure which is the most correct term.A tech at SBC told me the best I could expect was 50.6 because that is where there system limit is.He said I might be able to got the 53.3 limit with special filters.thi test is about the top for my system but I am gettint this speed more conisisently.Cholla :::.. 6. Howdy H1tman I didn't mean to tell you what I saw in the report would help your test speed. It was just when I used the tweak that I saw in your report my web surfing speed slowed down.Thought it might affect your system the same way.VanBuran is right it shouldn't affect your test speed at testmy.net Cholla
  7. VanBuran this is the URL of my test from broadband. If you have dial-up you have to trick this test to get the results since it has no dial-up in its list.I use the ISDN setting & 128k these are not correct but the only way for me to get the results. So here they are: http://ttester.broadbandreports.com/tweak/block:3627a05?service=isdn&speed=128&os=win98SE&via=normal I hope this works otherwise I will do the test again & cut & paste it. THANKS Cholla
  8. Thanks again VanBuran I already am doing this as far as I can tell. One of the tweaks for this is at HKLM/System/CurrentControlSet/Services/Class/Net/000/Ndi/Params/IMPTU/enum.The 000 is your ISP. The only settings I have here now are 2 string values Default & 1524 Automatic .The 1524 is the MTU value I got from the terminal window in my last post. Here is the usual disclaimer Don't mess with your registry without a backup. :)Cholla
  9. I noticed a tweak that I tried in your report fromhttp://www.jdees.org/ryan/current.spg.the MaxConnectionsPerServer &MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server setting. These slowed my surfing down instead of making it faster.Anyway you might try the origional settings. My windows 98 se only has the MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server setting set at 4.these are located at HKCU/Software/Microsoft/Windows /Current Version/Internet Settings
  10. Thanks VanBuran.I already had the PMTU Discover tweak in my registryset at 1.I had already read the thread & DSL site info .I am on a regular dial-up ISP & I am 28600 ft from the Telco. The MTU tweaks that I have put in my registry have improved my speed even after I added the PMTUDiscovery one. This might be because my MTU is already the right size when the TCP discovers it.This is why I had a question about the tweak I asked about to do a little more fine tuning. This is a download test done today :::.. Download Stats ..::: Connection is:: 51 Kbps about 0.1 Mbps (tested with 386 KB) Download Speed is:: 6 KB/s Tested From:: http://www.testmy.net/ Bottom Line:: 1 times faster than 56K you can download 1MB in 170.67 second(s) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/cgi-bin/get.cgi?Test_ID=DFMLC0UXM I know this is not much compared to your speed test as I visited your site & signed the guestbook. But it is good for Dial-up at the distance I am from the Telco. My current ISP cannot be pingged I have talked to there techs which are pretty good for ISP techs at least they are not in India & they say this is for security. Here is a way to get an ISP's MTU In My Computer go to Dial-up net/Modem Properties/Options.Select the "Bring up terminal window after dialing" .Then dial your ISP.A black window appears wait till it asks for user&hit enter;then type in your password& hit enter. The MTU should be one of the results reported. This is on a aWindows 98 SE.You may have to try more than once to get this to work even needing to restart other times it works the first time.
  11. I have my registry pretty well tweaked for the MTU .I prefer to do this myself instead of using programs. There is a setting that I haven't been able to get any information on.It is located here in a windows 98 se:HKLM/System/CurrentControlSet/Services/VxD/MSTCP/Ndi/ATMDefaults.then on the right screen there is a binary value named MTU. Does anyone know if there is a tweak for this setting or what this setting does?
  12. I've used cablenut on dial-up & it slowed me down. There are many tweaks on the web try them carefully .By trial & error you can speed dial-up up some.I recently talked to a SBC data tech he said the best dial-up can get is 50.6K & thats if you are inside the Telco.I am at 26800 ft so the speed test here is about the best I get with tweaks. :::.. Download Stats ..::: Connection is:: 30 Kbps about 0 Mbps (tested with 386 KB) Download Speed is:: 4 KB/s Tested From:: http://www.testmy.net/ Bottom Line:: 1 times faster than 56K you can download 1MB in 256 second(s) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/cgi-bin/get.cgi?Test_ID=AWYCC07DH
  13. I have used the download test several times. Finally decided to register. This is my download stats: :::.. Download Stats ..::: Connection is:: 28 Kbps about 0 Mbps (tested with 386 KB) Download Speed is:: 3 KB/s Tested From:: http://www.testmy.net/ Bottom Line:: 0 times faster than 56K you can download 1MB in 341.33 second(s) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/cgi-bin/get.cgi?Test_ID=B34RDB98D At 26800 ft from the Telco I am told this is about the best I can get. This is too far for DSL.I have tweaked about as much as possible. But any suggestions would be welcome.
  14. I just wanted to post something.I'm new to this forum.I have regular dial-up my average speed is 28K .About the best I can get at 26800 ft from Telco.
