  1. :txt-warn:

    Warning ---

    :sorry:

Some of the modems/cards will not work

with PCMCIA to PCI adaptor cards their is a conflict

Make sure you can return the adaptor card if this fact happens to you

Good point, something for simpleman to keep in mind.

And, tommie, I would assume that there is a contract requirement with Verizon, there is with Sprint.

And the support? I have never had a problem, so never needed to call anyone, been around 2 years now.

I don't test speeds on it much, but I do occasionally get into and area that seems to be a little busy, or saturated.

  2. I just reupped my contract and got a new phone with them. So it would have to be with Verizon. Which is ok, I like them so far.  :grin2:

    What is the U/L like??

    Posted this test result earlier.

This is Sprint, though, not Verizon.

    Quick speed test:

  3. So I could possibly do this also then. I will have to check with verizon.  :grin2:

If you have the service in your area, then yes.

I drive all over the city where I live daily while working, and I rarely loose the connection.

    It is pretty stable.

BTW, you should also check the other carriers, but I believe Verizon and Sprint/Nextel are the two biggest EVDO carriers.

Both are available in Omaha, NE,  where I live.

  4. Those are decent ping rates. I am not sure if rev A is available. On the phone I was told it will be rev A but, she absolutly did not know what she was talking about technically. I asked if I could route to my other PC and she said no and that I would have to have two cards and two accounts. When there website clearly states that the merlin s720 is usable with the linksy router.

    http://powervision.sprint.com/mobilebroadband/devices/S720card.html

I'm trying to get this for two desktops. If you could enlighten me on which card and how to route to my other pc it would be helpful.

Answer to Tommie is PCI to PCMCIA adaptor.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?DEPA=0&type=&Description=PCI+to+PCMCIA+card&Submit=ENE&N=0&Ntk=all&Go.x=0&Go.y=0

I guarantee that there is a way to route them, hopefully without the expensive wi-fi sharing boxes out there.

Although, that Linksys box is not too horribly expensive.

When the wi-fi sharing routers fist came out, they were like 600 dollars and higher.

Here is one way thru windows: http://www.evdoinfo.com/Tips/PC_5220/Windows_Sharing_EVDO_2005021759/

Any one else having any ideas?

I don't share my EVDO connection, I use it for work and have a cable modem at home.

  5. For the heck of it, I fired up the laptop and ran a ping testt.

The times are better than I recall they usually were:

    This is via Sprint/Nextel, BTW.

  6. Thanks, Sparticus, I think you're on to something.

I almost always have the TV up on my ATI All in Wonder Radeon (I know, it's a little out dated) when I am at the computer.

It loads up quicker with that off.

I will try looking for newer drivers for the video, if any exist.

  7. Does anyone else have a problem with a Java applet taking a long time to load up?

For example, a weather radar map using java.

when I choose the looping image, the browser (both FF and IE) locks up for sometimes up to 1 minute or so.

    This is annoying.

It even does it when running a speedtest with one of the NDT server's (most use Java).

    Here's a couple examples:

    http://nitro.ucsc.edu/

    http://radar.weather.gov/radar.php?rid=ILX&product=NCR&overlay=11101111&loop=yes

Now once a an applet has been loaded from one page, it will be OK for a couple hours.

I tend to avoid an Java apps because of this issue. maybe I'm being a little petty.

    PC = P4 2.52GHz / 1Ghz RAM.

    Any suggestions would be welcome.

I have un-installed and re-installed both FF and Java, updated IE, etc..

  8. The community on these forums is unbelieveable, probably the best I've seen! I will definitly try pushing the reset button on my router when I get the chance. I am unable to access the room with my modem and router because family members are sleeping in there right now. How can I go about pinging my internal and external gateway when my connection is dropped? Sorry about asking so many questions, but networking is just not my strong point with computers and this problem could be caused by so many different things.

    Welcome to the forum JTD1688-

When you get a chance, do as rushonbye suggested and type 192.168.100.1 into your web browser (from any PC on your network) and go to the "signal" page and copy and paste those levels back here so we can see what your modem levels look like.

    Here is mine, for example:

    Frequency  595750000 Hz

Signal to Noise Ratio 35 dB

    QAM QAM256

    Network Access Control Object ON

    Power Level 10 dBmV

The Downstream Power Level reading is a snapshot taken at the time this page was requested. Please Reload/Refresh this Page for a new reading

    Upstream Value

    Channel ID 4

    Frequency 37200000 Hz

    Ranging Service ID 7784

    Symbol Rate 2.560 Msym/s

    Power Level 45 dBmV

(my Rx is kind of smokin' but it's only 9

  9. Good info there, p0ltergeist.

Sparticus, it looks like you have plenty of headroom on both the forward and return.

Modems seems to run best between -5dBmV and +10dBmV at the receiver, and between about +35dBmV and +52dBmV for the transmit level.

This is from personal experience; so I would say that you have nothing to worry about.

I would like to see the downstream SNR ( or MER), but apparently the SA Webstar doesn't give up that info.

  10. The newer components are cheaper and more efficient.

You may spend 200 bucks trying to find parts to upgrade your existing PC when you can go all new basic components for just a little bit more.

I have a 4 year old P4 2.53 GHz that I wanted to upgrade, but after checking into the older memory and the fact that it only supports the first HT processors, I have decided to go all new.

Just doesn't make sense to dump money into an old fart anymore.  :grin2:

  11. Your talking many thousands for 3.5 miles of cable.

First, just 3.5 miles of cable is very expensive, and most likely, coax won't cut it as most cable co's only run about 5 amplifiers in cascade maximum.

They would need to install at least 6 amplifiers if they used the largest trunk line.

The amps alone are 500-1000 dollars a piece.

So,  a fiber run and a fiber node are probably the best option, unless there are other homes and neighborhoods that they would pass on their way to you, then it would make financial sense.

Now, where I am, we have tested a wireless DOCSIS system that has a few mile line of sight range from the physical cable plant.

It is not cheap, but alot cheaper than running wires.

Check to see if your local cable company has this as an option.

Here is one example of equipment we have tested: http://www.arcells.com/

  12. I have Sprint's EVDO service on my work notebook.

I have the Merlin S620 card, and my average speeds are around 500 kbps, so I agree, not bad.

It all depends on signal strength and location.

I know of a few spots in town where I get slower speeds most likely due to traffic at that particular cell site.

The fastest I ever see is 1 to 1.5 mbps.

Not bad for a totally portable service.

  13. Yes, very nice ping times, upchuck1jr.

Welcome to the forum, btw. :welcome:

Have you double checked for viruses/spyware?

All of your levels and your SNR look great, nothing obvious there.

Maybe try a longer test like: pathping www.testmy.net from command prompt.

This will compute your stats over a time of approximately 5 minutes, if you have never ran that one before.

  14. Should have been with me and my late wife that Sunday morning back in May, 1980.  We were camping about 7 miles South West of St. Helens.  Made for some beautiful photos that morning about 9:30am.  Just glad we camped where we did.  I was living in Vancouver, WA. then. Moved to PA. that Thanksgiving - that put me near 3 Mile Island.  Just my luck I guess.

Yah, lucky you did not camp to the east...wish I could have seen that live.

And thanks for the correction, 1980, not 1981.

My experience was the dusting on everything in the central US, not a monster explosion like you must have witnessed, EWO.
