  1. blunted, find a building you can all see (this looks like you want to connect more than 2 houses) the large corner building looks like a candidate and ask the owner if you can set up some wireless kit on their roof. all it would need is the antennas pointing to your respective houses and the access point. that way you would all use a high gain antenna to shoot that one building and wouldn't have to cross over buildings the same height as yours.
  2. i've got an ms-dos 3.3 i could send you for a mere 24.95 plus shipping and tax...
  3. lol. now they will subpoena testmy for your ip. well done!
  4. possibly. i know there is a snap on adapter for my kodak. check the mfr. website under the model and accessories.
  5. more capacity. and to fill it the special edition of kong will come with audio commentary from the assistant to the assistant directors hairstyling advisor.
  6. sure. but if like you said you're happy with what you have now, maybe invest in more batteries/memory if you feel either is insufficient and wait before sinking more money into a camera that is only a little better than the current one.
  7. oh. i thought they had digital cable. hm. would still be stealing.
  8. and you would also have to set up some encryption so that only the neighbors you intend will be able to use it. then you will have to deal with angry calls along the lines of "i can't connect to your free network!" "your free network is slow" "i have terrible pings with my xbox" and so forth. you would need to rent one fast connection to be able to satisfy all the people. you will need to buy some antennas. so will they. it's just not worth the hassle. let everyone keep their own broadband link. as for the buddy down the street buy 2 wireless routers that you can configure as a bridge and that have antenna ports and set up a decent antenna at both houses and you should be golden.
  9. well, i would need the settopbox for that, and a card for it, all of which is surely available but not worth the trouble.
  10. if both the proxy and your at home connection use dhcp windows should be able to find the proxy by itself or just connect straight through depending on what is the case. that is what the ie/tools/internet options/connection/automatically configure settings is for no?
  11. about frickin time. and why the hell doesn't it include consumers? it doesn't take a brain surgeon to activate wep128 to at least be secure against the casual wardriver. more security of course requires using wpa 1 or 2... which is crackable but requires a lot more effort than wep to do so. we have a store around here in a strip mall that has it's in store network wireless. they run wep 128. so i could park outside the store and break it in nothing flat and noone would get suspicious. the fines for consumers would be to make sure they secure to protect them from others using their connection for illegal purposes in which case the connection owner is responsible...
  12. i don't think that cam would make my list,m but then that's what personal taste is for. as for is the upgrade worth it, do you have the cash available and do you want/need the upgrade?
  13. hm. interesting. that might explain having to resync the modem (powercycle) it indicates synched but the connection is dead... as for the emergency broadcast system killing the signal, i would think it only affected the participating tv station... i only have the powerlink, not their cable.. can't say wether outages concur with signal...
  14. when i bought my cam 1.5 years ago the 350 dollar price range had some 5 and some 4 mp cameras. i went with a kodak 4 mp that has a 4x optical zoom and pretty much every manual function you would expect to find on a normal slr. it is fairly compact and uses li-ion battery packs. one came with it and i bought the hi capacity one so that if i take it on the road i always have at least one full battery that's good for a couple hundred shots. with a 512 meg card it gets about 250 or so pics at highest quality or 47 minutes of 360x240 30fps quicktime video. with the 4x optical zoom and the 3x digital you can get pretty close while the 4x optical lets you take moderate tele shots whithout sacrificing resolution. so when shopping around go for the best lens set you care to pay for, memory is cheap and decide what kind of power supply you prefer. (dedicated battery packs, usually li-ion nowadays usually last way longer than rechargeable or alkaline AAs or AAAs.) battery packs mean you need to plug in the charger to reload, but like i said, one pack for me can fill the mem card so i need to dock it somewhere anyway. and the charger that came with mine is a travel charger, so it will eat anything between 100 and 260 volts.
  15. found.000 sounds like the chkdsk run found lost clusters (ones that had data but weren't allocated to any file.) unsure under what settings it would save these, but if the entire dir was 'lost' and these are the clusters from it then the found.000 could be a 40 gig file with all the data lumped together in it. that might be why the data recovery company is offering to do it for cash. the stuff is still there they would have to separate it into the separate files again.
  16. the fact that the guy that claimed to do it hasn't booked a one way trip to guantanamo, cuba is proof enough of a fake to me...
  17. actually i don't think big oil is too much against fuel efficient cars. they still would make enough selling oil for power and heat generation and the only thing more efficient cars would mean is that the oil lasts longer meaning they can reap the profits over a longer time period. they will eventually sell all the oil, and reap all the profits. a few years more or less shoudln't worry them.
  18. oh shit. where can i put my face...
  19. my point is that people could be helping themselves by buying diesels. but there is no demand, hence few european manufacturers bother offering them. vw has the touareg suv as a diesel, but the beemer and mercedes suvs are only available in the biggest gas versions while you can choose between several diesel engines for them in europe. same with jap automakers. each one offers the cars in europe with decent diesels while all you get here in the states is the big gas engines. agaqin, kudos to jeep for at least equipping the liberty with a diesel (off the shelf from mercedes). should get tyhe same mileage as the ford escape hybrid. it is up to the consumer to request diesel engines. ithat is the fastest and cheapest way to reduce fuel use and thereby emissions. and once the european and jap automakers make their diesels available to the us market then the us automakers will have to follow suit. france has about 60 percent diesel automobiles due to fuel cost differences and economy of diesel versus gas.
  20. since he apparently didn't get the presidential shaft i will have to call it a fake.
  21. well, if they say they can recover it for a fee, look at the fee and how much the stuff is worth to you i guess. nothing is free, had you invested in a ups you would not have had the power issue.. etc. etc. etc. but seriously, just check the price i guess.
  22. you could try going to the command prompt and changing to the directory there or entering the path of the folder in the explorer bar to see what happens. maybe run a checkdisk (if that frees up 40 gigs of space you know what happened). other scenario: you accidentally deleted it and the 40 gigs are now in the recycling bin, still taking up space and restorable...
  23. another interesting point is that while voip by cable providers may be routed to secure lines as fast as possible it is still easily interceptable by law enforcement. (since they have the providers cooperation). voip via vonage etc. (the ones that use your internet connection without any bells or whistles to send the stream) can be encrypted, but that should send up a red flag to law enforcement. (especially because said encryption would require a forced bypass rather than a cooperative one from the isp). also there is no structure in place where one could reliably intercept such calls from one place to the other. i would think that law enforcement prefers the isp's voip offerings to the 3rd party voip offerings.
  24. ok shug, you fill up once a month. the granny next door to me fills up once every three months, and she drives an old caddy V8. reason being she don't go out much. what's your mileage, and which hybrid do you have. (mind you i would consider hybrids less of a stupid marketing ploy if they used a diesel as the internal combustion engine instead of a gas powered fuelwaster. ford is looking into one of those...) it's just that the numbers you see are around 40'ish mpg for a prius in real life, and i can get 40 mpg with a vw golf diesel. and that thing is a lot bigger than a prius.
  25. shug, hybrids are garbage. take a slightly larger vehicle than the hybrid you are comparing to, take the european diesel version, and you get the same or better mileage without all that electric motor/battery junk weighing the car down.
