California set to test broadband over power lines
resopalrabotnick replied to ROM-DOS's topic in General Discussion
i've said it once and i'll say it again. internet over power lines (or any net, for that matter) is stupid, stupid, stupid. the frequency ranges impinged on by this are huge. the signal spreads from the untwisted, non-paired transmission lines like from a ginormous antenna. ham radio, commercial and emergency services, air traffic control are all in the frequency band usually affected. in austria a provider using internet via powerline has been warned to cease all interference. any further reports of interference will result in fines. while the idea sounds good in principle and may be feasible technically, the problem that the lines used for transmission are not in the least bit designed to not broadcast the signal transmitted on them makes it impossible to operate problem free. -

well, they were using power tools, so you use that big magnet thingy from the local junkyard and most of the stuff will be off the ground in no time... then pour a few dozen gallons of gas on the ground and light it to eliminate any plastics/fabrics/rubbers left over. -
http://isc.incidents.org/diary.php?storyid=1300 this is an interesting advisory about a bot that uses p2p-like communications to communicate to others. this will make it easier for the net to spread while eliminating the chance of killing off the net by taking the one comp controlling it off line. since usually botnets are controlled via unencrypted irc taking the irc server they look to for commands kills them. this botnet can withstand such measures.

looks like a stump shredder. it's used after you cut a tree to shred the stump. (durrr) big heavy disc spun at decent rpm with teeth to cut through the stump and mulch it into the surrounding dirt. but of course not fine and sharp enough to be dulled by the dirt it chews up. and obviously enough to destroy a car... the bugle emulatore in my mind doesn't fit in with the rest of them, as it fulfills a function that in todays world can no longer be adequately perfored by humans. (i know it could be, but let me explain) it is not just war casualties that are afforded the honors of a funeral with military honors. there are a number of veterans, personnel that die on active duty (say a guy has a heart attack, accident etc.) and government dignitaries that can be afforded the honor. the units that perform these guards of varying sizes (the number of guns used in the salute for example can vary by rank/position) are reservists or veteran volunteers. there has been a case recently where a commander used non-veteran volunteers for the gun salute and this was nixed by the pentagon. (i can look up the details if anyone is interested, have a fair idea of where to find it). anyhow, these groups are stretched thin and therefore not all of them are able to supply a bugle player at all times. the decision to use the iBugle was therefore made because there was no real alternative. (afaik playing a bugle isn't the easiest thing in the world. tbh i would rather have a decent sounding recording played at my planting than some kid butchering his way through the piece. and at least the visual effect of the bugle is kept. noone stands there with a boom box playing taps.)

The Star Spangled Banner in Spanish

to be honest i wouldn't mind the declaration or the constitution being translated to other languages. they are 'merely' historic documents, the language doesn't change the content or intent. however, bastardising the national anthem of any country by translating it and then turning it into a pop song... . had it been a translation for better understanding in print, it would have been similar to what is stated above. -
maybe run it on a faster box if it brute forces the password and/or call the guy and pay him for the pass?

well, you complain about the price and say you're on a budget. ok. so how do you put together a box that is equivalent to any of the 4 or 500 dollar offers from dell/gateway/whatever for less than that? and when you start adding in the software licenses... (usually an xp home and a works with word) there is no way you save money by going homebuilt. -

well what about mac? why is there even a macos standalone license? possibly for upgrades to newer version i guess. since you need a mac to run macos, and the mac comes with macos, i can't see the standalone license moving much... edit. can pick up an update for xp for 100. all you need is an old 98se or me or w2k license... -

if you complain about 145 for a license you will find some reason to nitpick a 50 dollar license and still not buy it. the pricing for their software isn't bad. the os is free with a new box anyway, they have the student teacher edition of office for 150, and that is legal for 3 installations. what more do you want? -

how do i show a pic to someone? JUST SHOW!!
resopalrabotnick replied to solidsnake's topic in General Help
my best guess would be the following. write a program that is able to hack the picture up into random segments. make a vid card/screen combo that gets at least 100 Hz a minimum requirement. now, a tv only displayus 25 pictures a second (actually 50 half images) to make screencapturing more difficult the program should only display a quarter of the picture in any one frame. this quarter should be random segments of the pic. the program should then ensure that any one pixel gets refreshed avery 25th of a second, to achieve the tv effect. actually you can get away with as few as 18 or so fps iirc. if a screenshot is taken it will contain only bitys of the picture. to get the whole picture several screenshots would have to be taken and blended. the picture should be hardcoded into the program in an encrypted form so the pic can't be reversengineered out of decompiled code. that's assecure as i can think to make it. -

why should you not have to pay for licenses if you have more than one comp? if you have so many comps use their enterprise program that allows for cheaper licenses. plus, if you buy your comps prefabbed then you get the license for free anyhow. -

well the current situation is this: the turd is airborne, the fan is spinning, and the two are bound to meet in the near future. the government is going to be broke. let us examine why. the puerto rican government is the largest single employer on the island. the latest numbers amount to 304,000 public employees, making up 24 percent of all the jobs on the island. 72, yes seventy-two percent of the governments budget goes to making payroll. the government recently blurbed about how they had reduced the number of jobs. this is even true. the only caveat is that while they reduced the number of jobs they also increased the number of trust positions (which are better compensated and therefore more expensive) in the government agencies that got downsized. as for the government downsizing itself, i see those chances about as good as porcine aviation. if the government reduces its employees by 20 percent that increases the unemployment rate by 5 percent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11!!!1!!!!!!elveen!!!!!!11!!! now i would not even complain about the 304000 employees if the place was run smoothly. considering the size of the government, the place is a shithole of a banana republic. the condition of the infrastructure is atrocious (i'm sure the streets in iraq are better than here). now it is being discussedwether or not to keep the 80 million due in income tax refunds to pay for essential government services. if the schools close friday as planned that will cost the education department 263 million in federal funds. this is not so bad. they already gave up 60 or so million in federal funds because the reading programs run by the federal government didn't meet "puerto rican cultural standrds" i have found a clip picturing the current state of puerto rico. http://www.compfused.com/directlink/1323/ as for statehodd, that is the last thing the schmucks in power want. too much oversight. there was some comment about the states sending someone down to take care of the finances. a slim hope. my heart rate monitor is going off the scale here, so i'm gonna post this before i croak.

if the light changes form a green to orange it means that the lcd is going into a standby mode. the screen itself is off, just some of the electronics are awake and waiting for something to display. if you want to save power you can switch it off because it does draw a little current when in standby. if it is just a soft switch then it will still draw some power even when 'off' since the switch electronics are waiting for you to turn em back on. (hp printers are famous for their 'off' power draws.)
