  1. even in israel you should be able to buy online from dell and/or gateway. check their prices. as for someone stopping by in case something goes wrong, that's exactly what their service techs do. edit: and you can always check major retail stores in your area. as for having the guy next door do your service, do it yourself. hang out on this site, ask if you have a problem, and learn some new skills. dealing with a balky comp is not as difficult as some people try to make you believe. (especially at the time they are telling you how much it is going to cost you.)
  2. yeah, tried multiple discs. when i had it open and powered it up it seemed to pick the dvd up fine, you could spin it by hand just fine (it wasn't dragging on anything). just when it tried to spin it itself it died. to me it looks like the motor is dead, am just hoping someone has a better tip than tossing it.
  3. hm. got a dud panasonic dvd player here. opens tray, takes dvd, starts reading it, turns off. i opened 'er up and saw that everything moves like i guess it should, moving the laser and drive into position. when the laser detects the disc it tries to start spinning it. that's hwen it dies. sometimes the disc moves a few revs, sometimes nothing happens. any ideas?
  4. depends on what boards etc. specifically. and the ati radeon 128...i wonder if that's onboard graphics. also what kind of dvd burner is it? but dude, seriously, look at the quote, then go to the retailers and compare a system from them. for 700 you can get a decent box, you get xp and usually a works with ms-word and other software bundled /and/ you get to keep your old comp. shop gateway, dell, tigerdirect, newegg for prebuilt systems with os etc. one of em is bound to have a sale with good rebates going on that mean you beat the price, get a better system and have the software. the old box looks good as a storage server or office machine. maybe stick the burner in it so you don't burn with your main system.
  5. ...mmmmh. bacon so crispy it shatters into little bits when you hit it with your fork. sausage so fresh the pig doesn't know it's missing yet...
  6. basically it's been invented. however, there are some major difficulties. if you want to combine two connections to dl one file from one source at combined speed you need to have the sender know that you have two connections nad that comp has to send some packets on one and then some on the other connection (by sending it to two different ip's).the only way to do this is to have your own server doing that. so if you have access to a server in a well connected hosting site that server can dl at high speed and then act as a proxy for you, feeding both (or however many you have) your connections at max speed. the proxy alone will cause a host of problems, not to mention the overhead from doing it this way. you would also need to run a similar system inhouse to put the multiple streams back together.
  7. guys, bragging about stealing software with p2p and whatnot is bad enough. now we have to flaunt our exploits in actual physical theft of hardware?
  8. what do your resources look like after a reboot, and what do they look like when you try to play the tune?
  9. that is a great deal indeed. more than fast enough for regular net use.
  10. to paraphrase terry pratchett: what's the worm in the bottle for? to show how strong it is. strong enough to drown worms?
  11. how much does grandma shell out for that? is it a good deal?
  12. ...and the treehuggers will say it's all a smokescreen by multinational corporations in league with evil...
  13. forwarding through two routers. <shudder> and doesn't that add a little to your pings? some of these consumer boxes aren't the fastest known kit out there...
  14. good solution. that way he has more ports free than if he disabled the wan port by telling it to act like a switch.
  15. http://accessories.gateway.com/AccessoryStore/PC+Accessories_316441/Monitors_316684/LCD+_Q1_Flat+Panel_Q1_+Monitors_316694/20_D1_21+inch+LCD_381955/1534243_proddetail.htm?ref=merch yeah, it's a gateway. so? but that's the 21" display i'm looking to get if i get a large panel. it's got all the hookups for tv too, picture in picture, plus you can rotate the sucker 90 degrees. and it has a usb 2.0 hub built in. shit this post looks like spam, for gateway even.
  16. will just disabling dhcp make it act like a switch towards a connection via the wan port? or will the router itself try to get an ip as a device on the network. i'm not aware as to the options of that routers setup. mine lets me disable all router functions completely so it acts like just a switch.
  17. you need to go to the second routers config page and tell it that it is not a router, simply a switch. then you can connect comps to the available ports. the cable from the first router will likely have to go into one of the standard ports. i remember seeing routers that would leave it active and some would shut off the wan/internet port when configured to be just a switch.
  18. while you may get it to run with the wireless, a fixed installation with cable is always better than a wireless one ifyou intend to use it regularly.
  19. i like the bittersweet kind (any chocolate) sometimes. it's got more cocoa and less sugar in it. fav is a nice milk chocolate with hazelnuts.
  20. so i gather you have a room with the modem and the netgear and are using the broadband via wireless. you want to share the broadband where your comp is at by hooking up the old router in dumb mode to the comp and let the router be just a switch and the comp doing connection sharing to the other comps connected to the old router. my suggestion is run a cable from the netgear to the old router and plug all the comps into that. that way you avoid the wireless slowdown and still need to run only one cable to where the old router would be to supply all the comps.
  21. 5 lbs. that's what, a day and a half worth of chocolate?
  22. so right roco. there are those that just want to use the thing out of the box and those that want to twiddle every bit. there are those that drive a stock minivan and those that drive some souped up riceburner.
  23. mwah? when i pulled it up the first time it didn't have the pic??!?!?!?!?
