my theory is we are not alone. there is probably something like the federation from star trek out there with something like their prime directive. we are being watched but no contact will be made until we develop truly advanced space travel. the alien sightings are aliens that don't give a shit about the law and the crop circles are the equivalent of teenage graffiti tags. other options are: we are truly alone in the universe (unlikely) the other option is that there is a spacefaring civilization or more of them out there that is of a similar mindset as earthlings, in which case we are fucked if the decide to come by in force. a technologically advanced civilization whith the same values as humans would mean utter destruction for humanity. look what happened when the technologically advanced europeans landed in the americas and africa for example.

heck yeah. more bells and whistles. why not add a line with test result averages for the last 10 tests or so? as for themes, there are quite a few where the newsticker scroll on top is partly unreadable because of dark on black, blue on blue etc. the theme should include different colors for that.

if i were to use encryption for business i would not mind giving a keyset to a government agency. giving them the key doesn't mean that they will make use of it to read my mail, it means that they can verify that the communication they intercepted comes from a known source. if everyone gives their keys to a trusted agency traffic to or from a suspect can be analyzed to see if there are any unregistered keys being used. these would set off a red flag. if the key is known , the traffic can be decrypted to see if there is any untoward goings on. the problem would be making the agency wholly trustworthy. any and all leaks of info would have to be prevented to keep the publics trust.

because the more upload they give the more p2p traffic they get. and traffic costs money. also they don't want people hosting stuff on their connections. and the more upload they give the more people will be tempted to host small sites off their home links (where the isp has to pay the traffic) versus at a webhoster (where the webhoster pays for the traffic)

Skype offers free calling to phones in U.S., Canada
resopalrabotnick replied to richcornucopia's topic in General Discussion
dark06. you can play cat and mouse all you want. if you are working in a company that has outlawe skype then that company can scan the comps they own (which in that case includes the one you work on) for files they don't want. if they then find skype installed on their system or a history of a skype file being run from a thumb drive or other site they can decide to fire you. you are in breach of contract for installing unwanted software even though you signed a contract that you would abide by the employers rules. and i know that a lot of people holding down a job would not want to risk it for something like that. the admin may not be able to block skype reliably (which is the basis of the whole problem) but they can detect it on their net, if only as installed and/or executed files. -

the thing is peer to peer. so hard to track. it is also the one voip system incompatible to established standards. it's skype to skype only. no others. it encrypts its traffic, it hides itself in the traffic, it opens ports and has even been able to tunnel out of company firewalls. now imagine a hacked version of skype being able to exploit these perforated firewalls. not a pretty thing. that is why it is often forbidden by penalty of a public flaying from being used in a company. -

sysadmins hate skype. it tunnels through all kinds of firewalls with encrypted traffic that is near impossible to block. the worry is that if skype sets up these tunnels and there is a compromise of skype, what can happen to the network? -

i have commited road rage. some punk on a scooter cut me off. so i flpped on my high beams and let my ford explorer get no further than a few feet off his ass for a few minutes. he tried slowing down and speeding up, to no avail. then he tried to pas the car in front. luckily there was too much traffic to allow his escape. when he tured off the route i was following anyway he got away. had he fallen i wouldn'r have been able to start braking before...

the down and upload may both do better with a little fiddling. then again, you might mess em up. (definite backup of registry settings before any tweaks are attempted.)
-
welcome! nice speeds. is that a 30/2 link?
-
and where did you get that beta can you spell easter egg?
-
imo that's better than getting an "early" version from a third party. god knows what surprises they patched into that.
-
so on wednesday i should be able to go to microsoft.com and just run the updates to pull the new version?

using military personnel in a law enforcement role is a bad idea in any case. military personnel are not trained in the finer points of law enforcement. (except mp units of course). troops are trained for basic perimeter control, true. but usually the rules of engagement in such a scenario escalate to opening fire a lot faster than they do in a law enforcement role. if you deploy troops on the border they will be unfamiliar with the mission since they never received proper training for it and that will make them apprehensive and nervous. this will combine to make them more aggressive. i think that is a very bad thing. using troops to supplement the rear echelon of the existing border patrol units by providing logistic and communications support as well as training new border patrol recruits in weapons use and use of other equipment is ok. even in the training role they will only be able to offer basic support as the education about the duties of a border patrol agent can only be done by personnel that is trained in those duties. the last i heard was that the use of the military would be restricted to logistics and training while the border patrol force is increased in number to be able to use the officers available now where they will be most effective. on the border and not behind a desk. if troops are sent to the border maybe they shouldn't stop at the border... -

concerning the download behaviour: it apparently buffers the entire song at max speed and then leaves the connection alone till the next song starts. -
Alexandria II ~ the great cyber-library

but having everything ever written, or rather everything still in existence catalogued and available as a text with a search engine to hunt through it... awesome idea. but nothing like grabbing an old paperback and curling up in bed... -
so basically we need the type of power supply to be able to look up its efficiency and then a list of all the hardware in the machine to be able to determine their power consumption. from that we can then determine the true draw of the ps on the mains. find out if he has a long powercord on it to be able to factor in that resistance if needed... not to forget the monitor (also draws power when blanked or in standby) speakers hooked up to it. quite a project...
-
it's more difficult than that. the output is rated at 400w. it may well take in more than that, due to losses in the power supply. (which is the heat you need the ps fan for in the first place.)
