so take a look at the case and see if there is a larger diameter fan blowing over a heatsink that is fed by heatpipes from the cpu. that would explain the lower rpm. you can always replace that fan with a more powerful one to cool it down more and/or install additional fans into the case to improve overall ventilation, if you have spots to mount them that is.

i haven't the faintes idea how sony sets up the case. it might be you have a heatsink leading to the heatpipe leading to the back of the case to another heatsink that is cooled by a slow running fan. at this point i would be sending an email to the support at sony or calling them to find out just how fast that fan should be spinning to decide wether or not to replace it.

hit a salvage yard or swap meet. pick up an old beater for 500 bucks. invest whatever neccessary to make it more or less safe (maybe 1 or 2 grand) then another 2 grand in nitrous and other upgrades. if you blow up the engine after a few races with nitrous so what? you still have 7 grand left to get you a decent daily driver and got all that youthful enthusiasm out of your system for a while.

hm, speaking of rocket on wheels, tommie gave me an idea there. ever watch the mythbusters epsiode with the JATO car? they took an old beater and strapped a few rockets to the roof. model rocket engines actually, i think it was 1500 lbs thrust for 30 seconds each with 3 of them on there. a pound of thrust will translate roughly into 2 hp. so if you take your beater and then install some model rocketry kit you can pretty much win any race... but seriously. for 12 grand. either go with something cheaper and economical, something cute and fun to drive or build it yourself. how about hunting down a mini (the classic one, not that pos new bmw one) and doing work on that? in its day the thing was a feared road race and rally car. sure, it had little grunt, but the thing also weighs less than your average turd so you can make it go fast just by popping in an extra rubber band. or look at british sports cars/roadsters. there's some awesome stuff out there.

i don't think it's greed. the problem is that the us phone companies have had the offers for unlimited local calling for a long time. then when modem use rose the calculations made went out the window since the phone companies still have costs even by local calls in their network. and normal phone use is a lot less than a longtime internet connection. while i agree that it sucks especially for those people that do not have a chance to get broadband and mainly because they are used to 'free' dialup service it is kind of surprising to me that this hasn't happened 15 years ago, when all the bbs's and stuff were really big.

europe has always been that way. let me tell you, you get very efficient in your use of online time for research and whatnot if you pay a couple cents a minute.

don't think the landing part would be that much of a problem. they aren't going to land gliding with the wings. they will land using the parachute. that way they only need to navigate by gps to the preplanned dropzone and pop the 'chute to float in. that way tyhey wouldn't need to clear terrain, the dz would be planned to be in a clear enough area. and if a storm whips up you get an even worse fiasko of people missing their dropzones completely than the normandy invasion. they would be spread out so far they would even miss the right country...

the best way to get them to do something you want that is in the realm of the feasible is to turn in into a project. talk to the teacher/teachers that teach computer science and/or the people that administer the schools systems and see if you can't convince them that setting up something like that would be a valuable learning experience. there are plenty of ways to do it, plenty of security issues, it would probably involve the students doing a lot of research and writing reports about it, brainstorming sessions, planning and finally a proper setup.
