  1. if you see it that way then all candidates that receive donations for their campaign are guilty of the same corruption. (which is in fact true) but how does the enron scandal connect to bush? not at all. anyhow, you should choose your sources a little more carefully. the article you cite is not a news story. it is an opinion piece. it does not reflect facts so much as the personal opinion of the author who in this case seems to be upset that his party lost.
  2. if there is no os on the hd to use to format it you can use a windows install disk and repartition and then format the drive. you can also purchase an adapter from 40 pin desktop floppy cable and power cable to the 44 pin laptop hd connector and just hang the drive into a desktop and work it over there.
  3. volume. they don't buy the mobo and cpu for 100. they buy for a fraction of that because they go directly to the mfr and tell him they need a bazillion of them. so he gives em a good price, knowing that he doesn't have to worry about selling his production. just like the os. they credit you 29 or 30 dollars if you don't want a windows license and the other 'ware that comes with it. so figure they pay maybe 40 bucks or so max. (i really don't feel like looking it up this morning) all the volume deals they have are the reason why you can not beat the prices for a complete box with a homebuilt. the only time a homebuilt is better is if you need a box with some really exotic kit in it that would be too expensive to upgrade into a configuration or that uses things the big mfrs don't offer because it's too far from mainstream.
  4. hell, the prices are great. i recently helped someone pick an ultra budget box. celeron 2.53, 256 meg, 80 gig, cdrw. no monitor or os, 304 incl. shipping. (xp home would have been 29 bucks with some other 'ware but he has a license) 1 year at-home service. very very difficult to beat with a homebuilt box not to mention the at home service. i did see in the list though that you can order a variety of discs with it. i think a windows cd was an option.
  5. so i buy a new box and spend the first few hours scrubbing out all the ad-/spy-/malware from google? wonderful.
  6. never. the only time you stop learning is when you die.
  7. i told you earlier they were gonna cop out with calendar adjustment bs.
  8. interesting observation. when i use the notebook it is usually with an external key/mouse, so the touchpad usually isn't even touched and very rarely i see the pointer just wander off into a corner. i always thought it was just sulking because of lack of use but i guess it was the touchpad (or more likely the little eraser type widget on the keyboard) doing it. if it is the eraser type piezoelectric pointing widget then i guess it would explain the constant vector the cursor gets. usually just wiggling the mouse around will reset everything to normal.
  9. looks like torrentspy is looking for some free airtime. i don't see how they would prove that the mpaa did such a thing.
  10. in fact since they charge for static ip service they will avoid giving you the same ip when you reconnect. also you will probably see a disconnect once every 24h or so just to get your ip changed. if you require a way to keep track of your ip to log on remotely there are several services out there that offer a dns service for dynamic ips.
  11. the thing with the pre-N equipment is: what if some specs in the draft actually do change? you're then stuck with a pretty proprietary piece of kit. sometimes being an early adopter is just not worth it. (or would that be premature adopter in the case of pre-N equipment?)
  12. psssst. i'm gonna tell you a secret. that test is way too much faster than the average. if you tested using the back button or an accelerator, it is a cached test. most members will recognize those. so it is fairly pointless to post them. but don't tell anyone. it's a secret.
  13. first you have to see if the ping goes mad wit all connections or just in the game. if it is just the game then someone else will have to help, i haven't played cs in years.
  14. i don't know. blue hippo is a ripoff. sure. but damnit, i wish i had thought of it and had the lack of scruples to pull it off. you don't need to ship a box until they pay for it, and then they keep paying you money? perfection. and damnit, i can't find the crank on that laptop. what did they do, replace it with one of those imbalanced wheels with a generator like in motion activated watches?
  15. prolly the same as xp 20 to 50 bucks tacked on to the price of a complete box. (i would never buy a retail copy of an os. if i needed a license i would buy a cheap comp with it and use it for something else with a linux or so. with 200 bucks for a retail xp home buying a comp for 330 at dell with a license means you get a decent office box and monitor for 130. insane. :haha: )
  16. i agree. hackers and the scriptkiddy scum that uses the exploits will be all over this sucker when it comes out. "ooh. a new ms os. let's hack it. we are so cool." the only good thing i guess is that with the dmca and patriot act things get a little stickier for the bastards if they get caught.
  17. speed seems ok, not the issue here i think. do some pathpings against the servers you experienced the problem, against tmn and other servers. see if you can get the pings to go ballistic that way too. of course, scrub the system of any spyware, malware, aol and other crap. if your system is clean and you can reproduce the high pings against different servers maybe ring up the isp and see if there are any known issues. if they say no, call again to get a different tech and see if he agrees...
  18. rent-a-center i think rents-to-own dell pcs. saw an ad for like 40 to 50 bucks a week. now, if you need a comp for a short time fast, that might not be the worst idea. granted, longtime it will kill you but it will get you online.
  19. where's the crank? don't tell me they nixed the one really useful feature?!?
  20. try taking the box off the net, boot in safe mode andthen look through the registry manually. also look for any files that shouldn't be there. like kiddie porn, newly created directories, farmsexxx videos, weird programs launching on startup etc. you might have to manually clean the damned thing if the sweepers et al don't get all the bugs out. edit. oh shit, did i just steer a thread back on topic?
  21. some numbnut took home a disc with 26.5 million names and SS numbers and got it stolen when his house got burgled. i'm sure you've heard of it in the news. the part where someone should be shot for stupidity is where they are giving a press conference about it and i quote here: after having said this in a NEWS CONFERENCE, and it being dragged all over the headlines, you think they have an idea now? hm?
  22. i dunno. i have never been much of a fan but i don't think her music is /that/ bad...
  23. what traffic do you mean? the traffic on the connection or the traffic jam of local, state and federal authorities wanting to get to your hous first when you uncap?
