  1. if everyone using K in conjunction with data amounts (as well as m and g for mega and giga, tera too, and so forth.) would consistently use it as the binary 1000000000 = decimal 1024 it would be no problem. the problem is that marketing departments like big numbers. and the way to make a number look bigger is to use the 1000 instead of 1024 multiplier. it can give you several hundred megs on a harddrive for example, or a substantial increase in the xxxx kbps connection. when the usually 1000 multiplier used in kilobitspersecond (kbps) gets converted to kilobytespersecond (kB/sec) it is easy to just divide by eight to turn bits into bytes. ignoring the little margin of error that creeps in. this then propagates into the higher units and cause confusion and strife. as in this thread.
  2. i'll take that as a compliment, thank you very much.
  3. interesting strategy. have every user that will listen use usb, slowing them down, making the bandwidth available to all users...
  4. posted before. but it fits so well. http://www.break.com/index/wowporn.html
  5. some isps cap you until you call to complain. then they connect you to their abuse department after the guy answering the phone sees the blinking red entry on your account. they read you the riot act, give you a final warning to cease and desist all activities etc. then uncap you. if you get caught again they kill your connection for good and blacklist you.
  6. didn't bill gates dictate the whole internet to steve jobs over a 2 week period so he would have something that he could use to get people to use the internet explorer?
  7. if it's restarting it sounds like it's too hot. you might do permanent damage.
  8. i would expect them to run frickin hot though. essentially it's 2 3 gig p4s running on the same heatsink area as 1. (granted, not everything is doubled in the d, but still) i think a big aftermarket cooler or liquid cooling is advisable. does the heatsink intel packages in the bundles differ from the one they ship for singlecore p4?
  9. hm. so you read somehwer? ok... um... you read somewhere that certain ports are configured to run faster than others. you are currently using udp/tcp xxxx (insert the ones you are using) for program xxxx and would like to either get a list of Throughputmaximized ports for you to use or if they can set the ports you use to high throughput. i guess.
  10. iirc you had the keys to your rides lifted? i would replace the locks to be sure that noone just drives off with em...
  11. by support i mean having products targeted at the mac market in the first place. most of the consumer stuff, which is what leads to cheap prices for a lot of widgets and gadgets, is targeted at the pc user. what the mac user gets is all that is compatible because they happen to use the same standard, but not much really in the way of aftermarket keyboards etc. i was tempted to nab myself an iMac keyboard because i liked the usb port on it. makes mouse cable management so much nicer.
  12. lol. can't really give you a script, i don't know what he's gonna sayu/ask, just answer the guys questions and describe the problem you are having, if he asks what you've done to your pc tell him about the port problem.
  13. when buying parts make sure all fittings are compatible. the only thing making me wary of watercooling is a water leak in my case. eek!
  14. you tell them your customer number so they can bring up your info and check that there are no other problems, then tell them what ports you are using so they can either Throughputmaximize those or to give you ports that are Throughputmaximized on their net. make sure you specify udp or tcp. if the xdcc transfer is running on a 'slow' port it may well be throttling you overall. that's why it is important to get a list of 'fast' ports from your isp to avoid slowing yourself down by maxing out a 'slow' port. of course on some ports, like for e-mail etc it can't be avoided if the isp sets the mail ports slower to keep the mail server from crapping out that's that. but you're not getting mail constantly anyway. in the end that helps you because the mail server can handle all requests instead of having to stack them in a queue.
  15. they may have upgraded to a new router firmware over the new year. that would explain why you are seeing the problem appear for you all of a sudden. and yes, tell them that. maybe a bit nicer and more specific. otherwise they will just give you a ticketnumber and lose the complaint. if you give your customer number the tech should be able to reset the routers right then and there. if the problem started recently and is due to an upgrade as i suspect then they may already have gotten a bunch of calls like that and will know what to do.
  16. smack! i forgot to list my modem. external usrobotics 2400 baud FAXmodem. and after a few months i stuck an adlib card in my comp.
  17. there isn't a thing you can do. talk to your isp, the problem is on their end.
  18. there are some ports for civil defense information systems that should be highly prioritized nationwide. these are 2367, 3453 and 2004. both udp and tcp. there are other ports set up by state governments, but of course that depends on where you live and if that state uses it's own port structure or just defaults to the nationwide standard. the FBI has 5 udp and tcp ports ThroughputMaxed, 911, 6821, 5411 for udp, 8657, 1984, 1482 for tcp and 993 and 5211 for both.
  19. well, while we are sitting here railing against the chinese for banning porn and arresting those that break that law (which seems perfectly fair, they knew that they were doing something illegal in their part of the world and you can't argue that porn is essential to the human soul etc) maybe we can remember one of the capitalist countries that has a strange double standard in its rules of conduct for tv and radio. they allow violence pretty much unfiltered while every single swearword is blanked out and every appearance onscreen of such evil things as t and a causes a public outcry. that's right kids, i'm talking about the fcc in the good old us of a. now, it's not that i have something against filtering of material that is possibly harmful to kids. what bothers me is that they filter anything remotely sexual, while the monster can rip the extras head off in slowmotion with no worries. /IF/ you're gonna create censorship, at least be consistent, or leave it out altogether because if only half of the shit on tv and radio is censored then i don't need anything censored. (not that i'm for censorship, but some of the things shown really aren't for kids) (and the adults can rent or watch hbo and the like)
  20. the torrent problem is well known. the only solution is a call to your isp, they have to configure the routers responsible for your node to allow full bandwidth for torrent streams. this is because some torrents use strange ports that are usually reserved for slower traffic, therefor they have less priority in the routers packet handling routines, slowing the stream down. get a hold of service, give them your customer number so they can reconfigure the correct node and what ports your torrent client uses to download. with this info the problem should be taken care of pretty easily.
  21. so get the other mods together and go to the mountain and bring us back a set of rules set in stone. end the need for judgement calls.
  22. while filesharing per se is not illegal, there are some things shared that are not copyrighted etc, the torrent sites usually advertised do tend to get the greater number of hits for moviez and warez not linx distros, right? somebody wearing a skimask and carrying a crowbar and a sack through a residential neighborhood at night may just be going to open his own cars door after locking the keys in, but more than likely he is up to something a little more sinister, which is why any cop in the universe would take a closer look. and the same goes for here. people trading opinions on crowbars, i mean tools for filesharing, shuld be at least observed closely if not have those posts deleted. if you must talk about such stuff, i'm sure there are many more forums out there that have people with a lot more expertise in such matters than here?
  23. only sad thing about intel powered macs is the way apple announced it would protect its os. it would have been nice to have macos running on intel architechture and then be able to go and buy a copy of it for my pc to have a real alternative to windows that isn't some cockeyed opensource conglomerate of ideas.
