the speaker in the pic is simply the pc speaker responsible for bleeps, brrrrrrrats, blurts etc. that the system makes. like the beeps at startup if the cat is lying on the keyboard etc. nothing to do with the soundcard or windows or anything. windows dumps its audio feedback through the soundcard into the connected headphone/speaker. those p3s at school probably have an internal speaker for the soundcard, and they will likely not do much quality wise. but they probably also have that little speaker for the mainboard.

disable file and printer sharing, make sure everything on your comp is legal, set encryption to 64 bit wep, transmit ssid, disable mac filtering. wait till the guy logs on again. take screenshots, call the local fbi office. problem solved. -

if the drm'ed music you are dl'ing doesn't come with the right to burn, you can't convert it, not legally. and the other way usually means decompressing recompressing, probably even decompressing, playing, digitizing, compressing, causing possibly significant quality loss and illegality of the end product.

you will have to check the music services eula how they allow files to be used. some services require you to buy a song instead of just downloading it with the subscription that lets you play all songs on the comp to burn them or even copy them to mp3 players. the problem is that if you bypass/crack the drm, you are again in posession of an illegal file. that's why winamp changed their drm dll a while back, people were using it to play the wmf and record it directly to mp3 without converting to analog and back first.

the original plan was the 10th. their news release about releasing it thursday said they finished testing it ahead of schedule so they decided to release it early since so many people are whining about it. that may not have been the exact wording, though... -
saw this thing where in alaska a wolverine had gotten into a cabin. two deputies went in with pump shotguns to flush it out. they said the terrible things with wolverines is that unlike other critters that break into houses they are prepared to fight to stay and are small enough to launch themselves at you from on top of cupboards, from under cupboards, under stairs off ceiling timbers etc. you never know where the damned thing is gonna come from.

all the tcpoptimizers (all of them) do is change registry values. cablenut is nice because there are tons of premade settings combos and it is easy to enter your own values to experiment. you can save thos combos and switch back and forth to tinker, easily reset the registry to defaults (if you borked it) etc. etc. if you know what you're doing you can do it yourself or ask here and have someone recommend a premade settings file. you can even export your own to have someone try your settings if you think you found the optimum combo.

Cyber Security Bulletin 2005 Summary
resopalrabotnick replied to organ_shifter's topic in General Discussion
doesn't change the fact that the people touting linux/ff/other opensource stuff will always say "we are much more secure". if need be they will point to the total number of systems affected by the flaws in question and argue that becuase ms software is used by more people it is much more vulnerable since more ms systems are vulnerable than opensource systems. -
i have a pet wolverine called fluffy. last time i tried to take a picture it ate the camera, so no dice...

it's expensive, but start sending your complaints by registered mail cc'd to the bbb and fcc... -
you might have on-access scanning for all files enabled, which you didn't with the other av? that means you are now virusscanning any file opened, created, changed etc. not a bad security situation, but it is kind of resource intensive. say the cpu requests data from file x. before, it would read the data off the disk and that's it. now, it requests the data, the data gets read, virusscanned and then sent to the processor.

i think you've done it. all that poking away at your dialup and fiddling with their hardware has led them to arrange for you to get dsl just to stop your meddling. congrats.

what are 10,000 lawyers at the bottom of the sea? a good start. what are you lacking if you have a dozen lawyers in your new foundation stuck in concrete up to their necks? more concrete. why don't al aqsa martyr brigade members attack jewish attorneys? professional courtesy.

Holographic storage: the 500GB business card
resopalrabotnick replied to amc11890's topic in General Discussion
the material has been there for decades. some university students did some experiments and found out that the standard clear tape 3M makes can be used as a medium to store information. several laser beams are targeted at one layer of the tape on the roll from different directions, changing that spots properties by heating it. this change can be read by focusing weaker lasers in the same way. you then write a series of dots into the roll of tape and end up with an inexpensive widely available storage medium that can be easily transported and stored. -

so we should flame you now for being part of the conspiracy? you're an insider, jack up peoples speed. be a true robin hood. otherwise, just stop whining about the isps supposedly keeping you slow for no reason etc. etc. etc. it's the profits they make with that that are paying your wages after all. bad co-conspirator. no cookie for you.
