...This makes my millenium heheh "PRINCETON, NJ -- July 27, 2004 - RCN Corporation announced the upcoming launch of MegaModem Mach 7 , providing cable modem customers with download speeds of up to an unprecedented 7 Mbps, as the company continues to execute on its vision of product bundling and cutting-edge technology. RCN expects to complete the upgrade across all markets by the end of August. " http://www.rcn.com/investor/pr.php?id=213

upstream speed forever remains the Holy Grail of broadband connex.....even on my T-1 it struggles to keep up with the downstream. A conspiracy indeed, in my opinion... lol keep the faith -JxL

Usually when i start to bellyache about my upload speed, i get flashbacks of 45-minute upload times for a single mp3 on aol2.5...& that was a good day when the dial-up didn't drop dead several times an hour but yes i will always complain about these upstream caps because they suck lol cheers~! -JxL

WWW.GBLX.COM is usually a decent ping: Pinging wwwgblx.web.globalcrossing.COM [64.211.77.61] with 32 bytes of data: Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 31ms, Maximum = 47ms, Average = 39ms using the max RWIN GlobalMaxTcpWindowSize="256960" -JxL

I checked with the carrier & the bossman, indeed it is a full T-1 on the tap.... SO next i hooked up an old boat anchor Packie Bell to the pipe, but this time on the DMZ. Sure enough, it was hitting 1.3Mps instantly on the downstream...Definitly there is a throttle of some kind in or beyond the router to lose so much bandwidth. I'm replacing the very-unfriendly NetVanta with a simpler Netgear or Cisco this week, i am sure we will see some interesting improvements -JxL

make sure your LAN card [network adapter] does not have the "allow computer to turn this device off to save power" option enabled...it is enabled by default on XP & W2k if i remember correctly. Always a good idea to disable "LMHOSTS Lookup" as well; another relatively useless gremlin in the TCP/IP realm. good luck -JxL

IMPRESSSIVE notebook for sure....i used Dell here at home until i got bored enough to build this Tornado3000 frankenstein & currently i maintain 42 Dell workstations at my job so i guess you can call me a "fan" of the Texas billionaire~! Plus the fact that Michael Dell had the balls to offer Linux installs alongside the typical MS rubbish, two thumbs up & a glass of VSOP enjoy & be well -JxL

After 4 weeks of failing to fix or even get useable info on this very annoying bug (broadband connections resetting every 2-10 minutes), the real story & a working fix has appeared courtesy of 'rtn', former senior admin at Global Crossing. This error was graciously supplied to W2k & XP users via a MS critical update; majority opinion narrows it down to either the active-x patch or one of the IE security patches. Either way, tcp/ip protocol was affected just enough to cause these 'software caused connection abort' errors. We added several tcp/ip parameters to the registry that normally are not present on OEM & retail installs, but are common on the enterprise server OS & the venerable NT3.5 suite. Not enough space here to post them all, email me for the full list. Here's a couple of the registry additions: Optional Parameters Configurable Using Registry Editor These parameters normally do not exist in the registry. They may be created to modify the default behavior of the TCP/IP protocol driver. KeepAliveInterval Key: TcpipParameters Value Type: REG_DWORD - Time in milliseconds Valid Range: 1 - 0xFFFFFFFF Default: 1000 (one second) TcpMaxConnectRetransmissions Key: TcpipParameters Value Type: REG_DWORD - Number Valid Range: 0 - 0xFFFFFFFF Default: 3 (in Windows NT) Default: 2 (in Windows 2000) keep the faith -JxL

Indeed yes this is the 'Mach5 Mega Modem' from RCN; basically a plain-jane looking Toshiba PCX1100U modem & a $7.00 SMC lan card. RCN also offers a seldom-mentioned proxy connection for free to its' cable customers(for those times that a shady IP is desired heeheh)... Rock on -JxL

that is so pathetic...i've been wondering when the money-hungry recording fatcats would try this stunt...i refuse to buy that cd ever just for this reason. another trick that is quite annoying is this 'digital rights' baloney; a track that i purchased from Musicmatch cannot be played on winamp... Glad I've saved my turntable & 400 LP's -JxL

Recent TCP/IP Error Affecting IRC/SMTP/HTTP :(
junkieXL replied to junkieXL's topic in Networking and Hardware
Multiple Vendor TCP Sequence Number Approximation Vulnerability Risk: High Symantec Advisory:..."A vulnerability in TCP implementations has been reported that may permit unauthorized remote users to reset TCP sessions. The cause of the vulnerability is that affected implementations will accept TCP sequence numbers within a certain range of the expected sequence number for a packet in the session. This will permit a remote attacker to inject a SYN or RST packet into the session, causing it to be reset " more info -> http://www.us-cert.gov/cas/techalerts/TA04-111A.html Microsoft's expectedly-weak response to this was "...Windows Sockets call to recv()/send() returns 10058 (WSAESHUTDOWN) or 10053 (WSAECONNABORTED). The underlying cause has yet to be determined and remains under investigation..." bollocks, i say !!!!! -JxL -

Any of our beloved Network Guru's on the forum have any insight to the recent plague of "[10053]-Software caused connection abort" errors that seem to be spreading in virus-esque fashion latley...? Never had problem like this, every 3 minutes or so, the connection resets itself & the user is inevitably booted off their irc/aol/smtp server... a most annoying bug that noone seems to have an answer for; and affecting not only broadband users like myself but dialups, DSL & even my T-1 at work. Thanks in advance , JxL

heres some quote from Verizon's press release; use link for full story-enjoy ;p -JXL ..."The New York-based company will add a new tier of consumer DSL service with a maximum connection speed of 3Mbps/768Kbps....In addition, Verizon will triple the upstream speed of its basic DSL offering for qualifying customers to 384Kbps. The price for this 1.5Mbps/384Kbps service will remain the same as the current 1.5Mbps/128Kbps service -- $34.95 a month ..." http://www.internetnews.com/xSP/article.php/3349301
