  1. Don't mean to hijack this thread. But I just got XP running in Parallels and it is just amazing. I have seen XP run quickly before but this is just unreal. I can seamlessly copy files from Mac to XP and the other way around. Now that XP is running I can allow another tech to have my Vista laptop. Part of the deal of the boss getting me the Mac. Now to see if my work properiety software will fully work. Thanks for the other links mudmanc4. I definately be checking into them.
  2. One software freeze I had admittedlly was my fault. Looking at Foomatic for printing and accidently tried to install something for 10.2 . Did not work too well. The other times I do not remember what they were. For the Pocket PC I came across SyncMate. It worked very will for the contacts and calander. Saw missing sync listed somewhere I'll have to give that try to see if it can sync files. I'm trying to avoid bootcamp and I ahve seen Vmware mentioned in other areas. Overall for the problems I have had the past 5 days have been a good experiance. Not really disappointing at all. As an example I really did not care for Firefox on the PC. Tried using Safari but have one website that will not work with Safari. Installed Firefox and it has been working great for me. I see no differance as the interface goes but it has been extremely smooth in operation. The boss got this for me. Guess he got tired of me asking for one. In my job I repair digital copiers. They can be connect to the network and used as printers and scanners. Mac's are showing up more and more so I decided to try and get them to buy me one. It finnaly paid off. So I'm determined to make it work no matter what problems come. They have been few and minimal. Admittedlly far less then windows. I will be checking into the other links that you mentioned. Thank you.
  3. Just got Entourage to sync with my Google Calander. Had to get iCal to syn with Google then set Entourage to sync with iCal. I've never really hated Mac's just did not care for them since they are so expensive. The whole system has frozen on me a couple times and I have had some software freeze on me. Heck, it's a computer right? I'm getting along with it alright. I'm about to the point that normal everyday stuff I can do on the Mac with no problems. I have at least two more hurdles to over come. 1) Get XP/Vista running in Parallels (no Reboot) for the propierity software for work and 2) Try and get my Pocket PC to sync with the Mac. The pocket PC I get a work around by syncing at work instead though. Other than that I'm not head over heels but it works well.
  4. I think it is Microsoft's new search engine. Have not seen it on my new Mac yet. Not saying to get a Mac and be done with it. Only had mine a week. Still prefer Windows but learning this is fun.
  5. I don't understand? Why would US Immigration be worried if they have legitimate software on their computers? They still can't do a background check that keeps terrorists out of the country.
  6. I've had no problems on the 4 Vista machines I have. Shop even got me a brand new Mac yesterday. First evening I had it and it froze up on me. I thought this did not happen to a Mac according to the commercial. Anyway Vista for the most part has worked very well for me from day one. Yes there were software that I had to find work arounds but all in all I have been happy with Vista. As for SP2 you won't see any visible changes.
  7. I do not currently have a link or the name of software, but isn't there count down timers that can be installed that will shut the PC down at a certian time? Granted this would need to be installed on each PC. Also it might shutdown in the middle of updating or something like that. How about a remote access software with admin rights to log them off from one PC individually?
  8. Here in the staes "Homeland Security" considers a router a PC. Somehow in the wording it is considered a federal offense to access a wireless router without the owners permission. If it can be proven that you accessed a wireless network you can be prosecuted. Though I cannot think of an instance where this has happened. In Vermont or New Hampshire, I do not remember which it is but they have an ammendment to the law that if you do no secure your wireles anything that happens on it is your responsibility. I also used to leave my wireless unsecured so that others could enjoy the internet. I got tired of when I needed to download something I had no bandwidth available. So I secured it. I did get a letter once for downloading some "Disney" movie, don't remember which one. Called the cable company and explained that I think it was ione of the kids and as above they said don't let it happen again. Cut my downloading down big time for several months. Still download on occasion but not nearly as much. What I download I usually wind up purchasing to have better quality. I also download what I already own, especially movies since some are not easily backup because of copy protection.
  9. I have not tried IE8 myself yet. When IE7 first came out I tried it and had the same problems mentioned here. IE7 now works fine for me. I also have Firefox installed and use it once in awhile. It seem to take alot longer to come up then IE7 even with the hacks on the internet. Once it's running it runs pretty good. I'll be waiting a little longer before trying IE8.
  10. There are numerous things that can be done from the command prompt. Anything from defraging a PC to sending an e-mail through the SMTP server if relaying is allowed. The best thing to do is decide what you want to try and do then do research of doing it. Not trying to be difficult, it's just that there is so much that can be done.
  11. Depends on the operating system you are using. Both Vista and Xp have an "Internet Connection Wizard" built in to allow you to share the connection with other computers. In it's simplest form I believe that is all that would be needed. Disconnect the DSL from the router and run the wizard. The other PC's should pick-up you PC as the access point for the internet. Theough I have never tried this, I believe this is how it is supposed to work in theory. Now the other problem is the internet package. Most of the ones I have seen using these USB cards only all 5 gigs of download per month. After that your speeds will degrade and you'll pay out the wazoo for overages. Especially with multiple computers. Check the fine print. A few of them say unlimited but then when you look at the fine print you find that you are limited to 5 gigs a month. Hope this helps.
  12. Just want to stay on her good side.
  13. I'll apologise here to everyone else also. I did send the initial recipient an apology with a copy going to our illustrious secretary. The first warning I got I did not see where I needed to apoligise. I may have very well overlooked but did heed the warning. I reread my post and can see where it can be construed as mean and so forth. I did give some concise instructions after the first comment, then the last could have been misconstrued again. The first was a poor attempt at sarcasim. If I really felt that he should go back to dial-up I would not have mentioned anything else afterwards. The last statement is true in that my 10 year old does use Cablenut on his computer and helps his friends with it on thiers. Again without knowing everything I can see the misconception. In forum's such as this words do not always convey what is trying to be said. As mentioned above I have also been a recipient of similar because of my stong stance with patriotism and our military. It ticks me off to no end and I do my best to calm down before responding. Again I apologise for the poor misrepresentation to this guy right out of the box.
  14. At risk of a warning I'll just say there are ways around that. As for not working in Linux either, I would say it may be disable in the bios. Of course that would not expain why windows did pick-up the card to begin with. It is possible that the card is bad even though it was found. If you have another network card handy that fits the board try that. It would not hurt to try.
  15. It's best practice to do a clean install when replacing the motherboard. It can be done without but as above there is the driver problem and getting reactivated. Of course even by doing a fresh install of windows activation is still required in some case's. Of course now there is a dual boot with Linux. Does the network work with Linux?
  16. Replacement of the MB and using a preinstalled XP on a HDD. Windows detected a major part replacement which is why it want's to be reactivated. For activation the only other solution is to call Microsoft and activate by phone. If this is a valid install of windows, not pirated, you should not have a problem getting a new activation code. Just tell them you had to replace a failed motherboard. As for the connection, if Device Manager no longer show exclamation marks for the drivers should be installed properly. Does not always mean they are. I'm not sure if an invalid/non-activated windows will disable networking or not. I know with Office a pirated copy may not allow printing if disabled by a Microsoft Update or gets red flagged by them. Happened to a friend.
  17. Yep, network driver not loaded. You mentioned that you could get windows to boot normally? If so does the CD/DVD work from there? From there you should then be able to go back into device manager, double click, then update driver. Either choose custom? or let windows find the driver on it's own. It is possible it may not check the CD, though it should. Could also try a USB thumb drive. Using another PC copy the files to the thumb drive then copy to the HDD.
  18. Chances are the proper network card drivers are not properly loaded. Go into control panel, System, Device Manager. Look for exclamation points. These are the hardware that need the correct driver loaded. If you did not get a CD with the motherboard go to the manufacture's website and download the most current drivers for the board. This can include video, PCI-bridge, network, or even sound. If it is an add-on wireless card you may need to reinput the settings for the network.
  19. It's true he can do this. The guy ask's a legitimate question, then after checking the links decides it dounds to difficult. It was not meant to sound mean or degrading. Just trying ro say that it is simple enough a that a 10 year old can do this. Yes, I admit that at first glance it may seem difficult. Just trying to point out that is in fact easy. Reading text has no inflection and can seem mean and callous. Beside's if I chilled anymore I'd have to light a fire just to maintain body temeprature. Take care.
  20. If Cablenut looks to complicated you may want to go back to dial-up. All you need to do is do a speed test first. This will let you know what you currently have. The install the Cablenut software. Just run the "Setup". Now depending on the typ of internet and your speeds choose the appropiate file to install in the Cablenut. You do this by file, open, and choose the appropiate css file. Reboot the PC and do a few more speed tests. If you do not have a good speed increase the PC is either set correctly or you need to try another css file. Nothing difficult about it. My 10 year old can do this.
  21. Got my letter today. Myself Iiked our Circuit City better than the Best Buy that was right acroos the street. Now Best Buy here has no local competition so things will probably get worse here. Don't get me wrong it's not a bad store just personnal preferance.
  22. This is great news, but where did you get the info? I did a search using Google and Yahoo but found nothing about being able to eventually use my Circuit City card at Best Buy. When all of this went down I got a notice that the card will eventually be traded for something else but I have yet to recieve anything saying what it will be.
  23. The top one is the full program. Has the ability to control another PC or for your PC to be controled by another. The bottom one I believe is the file that is need to allow another to control you PC.
  24. Used it last week myself. Best part is that a friend or relative that is basically computer illiterate can get help across the country. Once the server portion is installed on the host PC you can send an e-mail to the person needing help. They click on the link in the e-mail and have the option of "Run" or "Save" the program. If they "Run" they have noting on the computer when done. If they "Save" they will no longer need the link from you. Anyway once the file is "Run" all they need to do is give you the "Login" and the "Password". This will allow you to work through firewalls. It works great and is very simple to use. There is also a way to be able to set it up so that an individual can keep using it after a reboot. Great for use on you own personnal server or to login to you home PC from the road.
  25. Look at all the violent crimnals that are in jail for rape, murder and repat offenders. Some have been there for 20 plus years. My cure. If you are sentenced to death and your lawyer cannot get you proven innocent in 5 years the death penalty gets carried out. Take the 3 strike law a step further, 3 strikes and you are on the way to death row. Bring back public executions. With all of this the crime will go down and the jails will be less crowded. Also send the cost of execution to the families. Maybe they will try harder to keep thier loved ones from commiting more crimes. As for giving them the choice of military service. They don't need idiots that are willing to kill at the drop of a hat. Yes the military works some people has turned the occasional crimnal around but not every crimnal should have that offer. Yes these thoughts are harsh. The problem is that everyone wants the crime off of their streets but do not want the repsonsibility to take care of it. They keep cutting the budgets for crime fighting and for housing the crimnal. Bullets are cheap. Lethal drugs are sheap. Rope is cheap. Make a picnic of a public hanging and watch how quickly crime drops. That or the crimnal will get smarter and not get caught.
