Yea, I work for COX... and yes we do send a config file to your modem to let the modem know that the maximum up/down speed should be. He should only get 3000Kbps MAX... but in some new areas cable companies have been known to up the throttle a little bit when they have bandwidth to spare. This is sort of a marketing scheme so that you will let your friends know about the extream service you have ... Also, there is a possiblity that their TFTP server is sending him the wrong config file (ex: sending him a file for a user that has a higher level of service... maybe NINJA has friends in high places... because COX in some areas offers a tiered service) what ever the case... enjoy the speed while you can, because my guess would be that you won't have that forever Another resource would be another post I made here https://testmy.net/forumz/viewtopic.php?t=9&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=tftp&start=10#153 - CA3LE ~ Site Owner ~ www.TestMy.net

Ran a little benchmark on the side to pit the new Mozilla Firebird 0.6.1 vs Internet Explorer 6.0.2800 ~~ here goes. Versus Firebird 0.6.1 : ::: Download Stats ::: Connection is: 2498 kbps about 2 Mbit (tested with 605 KB) Download Speed is: 305 Kb/sec Auth Code: 2037471 (validate a http://www.testmy.net) Bottom Line: 45 times faster than 56K you can download 1MB in 3 second(s) IE 6.0.2800: ::: Download Stats ::: Connection is: 2459 kbps about 2 Mbit (tested with 605 KB) Download Speed is: 300 Kb/sec Auth Code: 2036886 (validate a http://www.testmy.net) Bottom Line: 44 times faster than 56K you can download 1MB in 3 second(s) Firebird 0.6.1 re-test: ::: Download Stats ::: Connection is: 2497 kbps about 2 Mbit (tested with 605 KB) Download Speed is: 305 Kb/sec Auth Code: 2037456 (validate a http://www.testmy.net) Bottom Line: 45 times faster than 56K you can download 1MB in 3 second(s) IE 6.0.2800 re-test : ::: Download Stats ::: Connection is: 2478 kbps about 2 Mbit (tested with 605 KB) Download Speed is: 303 Kb/sec Auth Code: 2037171 (validate a http://www.testmy.net) Bottom Line: 44 times faster than 56K you can download 1MB in 3 second(s) My Conclusion --- Mozilla Firebird 0.6.1 is a little faster browser than IE 6.0.2800 ... not very much faster though, only a couple of KB/sec difference over all. So far what I have seen from Mozilla Firebird I love it, and would highly recommend downloading it at http://www.mozilla.org/ ~~ but don't get it in the hopes that it will increase your connection speed, that still going to be limited by your provider -- predninja you are getting awesome speeds... I wish I had a connection that fast, but your OS and browser are only a portion of the reason you get speeds like that, your provider of course comes into the mix and most importantly your CPU, RAM and NIC card plays a part in how fast you are running... now, you running linux frees up a lot of resources so that helps you out a bit, but you are still limited by how fast your provider wants you to be... you are also limited by how fast the test server (in this case, my new kick ass dedicated server... so you have no bottle neck there ) ... again, AWESOME man... two more Mbits and you got yourself a 1 MB/sec (not Mbit... MEGABYTE/sec) connection (I would cry if my connection was that fast) ~~ key us in on who your provider is and what level of service you have... how much do you pay.. blah blah. - Damon ~ CA3LE6UY!

::: Download Stats ::: Connection is: 2746 kbps about 3 Mbit (tested with 1210 KB) Download Speed is: 335 Kb/sec Auth Code: 2041191 (validate a http://www.testmy.net) Bottom Line: 49 times faster than 56K you can download 1MB in 3 second(s) ::: Upload Stats ::: Connection is: 263 kbps about 0 Mbit Upload Speed is: 32 Kb/sec Auth Code: 2003946 (Validate at http://www.testmy.net) Bottom Line: 8 times faster than 56K, you can upload 1MB in 32 second(s) not too bad :-/ ~~ not as good as some of you guys though

JESUS... that is insane!

I actually work for Cox in Phoenix, and I can tell you this much... if you are getting only 48Kb/sec there is something majorly wrong. I would call 623.322.2000 and talk with business services about getting a tech out to see what the problem is, or call 623.594.1000 (main). It could be a problem with your levels, could be your modem, could be a router you are going through ... or it could be an ethernet cable... Trust me, it's not the connection though. Have you tested more than once? Post some more scores... let me know when your fixed and happy. - Damon

DOH! I messed with my ranking and accidently took both of you off PiMP, it's fixed, you guys are cool again

I might just be contacting you ~~ need to get the pre-lim shit done first

There is however a cap on your cable modem, your ISP sends a config file to your modem which tells your modem what the maximum upload and download speed is. There is a way around this but a lot of Cable providers have gotten wise to this. Especially if you have Cox as your broadband provider don't even waste your time tring to upcap your modem. They query your modem, check your config and if it differs you are screwed and may be banned for abuse. Some other providers, (smaller ones usually) you can uncap quite easily just by acting like you are the TFTP server (the server that sends the config file) by spoofing the IP and uploading the config file via TFTP. I'm not going to give too much info on this because I work for a cable provider and it's not very ethical for me to release info about this. But it is very possible, before Cox implemented a little extra security I experimented with this and yes it does work. You do however need curtain modems that have a flaw in them that allows the config file to be updated VIA the ethernet port versus the RF (cable) port. Surfboard is the main player in this flaw. Also you need to have firmware 4.4.0 or lower, if you have a surfboard modem you can look into your modems built in http server and see what firmware you have (http://192.168.100.1/mainhelp.html) if you see "SB4200-0.4.4.2-SCM01-NOSH" you are screwed... your ISP has updated your firmware and fixed the flaw... meaning you now can't update your firmware via the eathernet port and there for also can't update your config file. Anyway, my whole point to this is that no mater how much registry tweaking you do... you can never go faster than your ISP wants you to... if you are getting really awesome speeds over what your ISP considers their maximum speed... consider yourself lucky. As for your situation micro, Cox has just recently opened up out there in Tucson... and to tell you the truth they are letting you have more bandwidth than advertised because they want you to tell all of your friends and since they don't have the customer base that they intend to have they have a little extra bandwidth to throw around, why not use it for marketing... very smart indeed. When I first got cable internet on the @home network (I was in the first group to get to enjoy this wonderful thing) the speed was 3 Mbit down AND upstream faster than t1 (latency just wasn't as good) of course I was serving files like CRAZY... and so was everyone else, that is why we now have caps :-/ ~~ those were the good old days when it was only 29.95 per month (but the modem was $499.99 and it was a lan city) ~ only about 6 months later they put a 128 cap on the upload speed, couple years later that was upped to 256... NOW... here is some new NEWS... product tiering starts in October and their will be three levels of service 128/128, 3000/256 and 4000/368 so if you are thirsty for a bit more speed... it's coming soon ... hefty price at 79.95 for the 'premire' version though ~~~ hopefully as an employee I get hooked up. Again, enjoy the speed while you can ~~very sweet indeed! and AGAIN to all of you, if you have Cox HSI... don't waste your time tring to uncap... you will only hurt yourself... out of ALL Cable providers Cox is the leader in fraud protection and you will be banned... :-/ ~~ I wish I could figure it out - CA3LE!

DSL? ~~ what is your upload speed? BY the way, google is throwing me ads now (paying me very generously too ) ~~ therfore I have taken down alot of the annoying flashing stupid ads, and finally got my ad space filled with real advertisers that pay real money... also took off the 'intersital' (that lame ass ad that would come on the screen for like 5 seconds before the test every now and then) I'm just glad I got rid of those other ads (flashing crap "YOUR A WINNER" "Your the VISITOR NUMBER 919109029, YOU WIN!", site was starting to look like a circus .. but I had to get my traffic back up before google would consider me. Site isn't back to AD FREE yet , but one large step closer. - Damon

YEA! There we go... much better. How much are you paying?
-
oh yea, that's right huh.. shit I barely remember that. lol

haha, naw that won't burn up your modem, that toshiba will max at 10 Mbit ~~ email me and let me know how you tweaked that. I wish my upload was that fast... I'd be servin' like a mofo.
