Update: It's provisioning... west coast will be down during the transaction because it's copying off that server.

... I should have probably done it off the DC server because it's closer and would have been faster. But more people use that server so I didn't want to inconvenience them.

    Hey Chris,

I had a server in Amsterdam for a little while but I had to back it off and focus on the US at the time.

... having said that... it's time to reopen that avenue. I'm configuring a server in Amsterdam as we speak. Should be ready for testing in a couple of hours. I'll update this topic when I'm finished.

That was very unexpected. You have my gratitude, and indeed that of the people in Herongate and Ingrave UK on behalf of whom I was making the request.

    Thank you very much!

not sure what ca3le's plans are for a european server...but i do know and your provider should know that when you go on the internet much of the content that you see and the websites you visit aren't in your area...internet is worldwide...so a test to a server that is far away is much more realistic. whenever i'm having problems my provider always wants me to to go to a certain page and run a test on their intranet server and the test is an ookla test, which is very deceptive and doesn't pick up many problems. i tell them "no, i'll run a test at testmy.net because it's a REAL WORLD test"

i'm sure ca3le will bee in here today to address this further

This service looks great. I and quite a few people in UK are trying to gather some local data to prove to BT that we have a substandard broadband service in our area (which we do). The TestMyNet service is perfect because it allows tests to be automatically run at intervals and logged.

However without servers closer to us, the tests have no meaning.

I note forum posts in 2010 that you intended to get european servers. Is there any chance you can manage to do so in the next few weeks?

If not, can you point me to a service that does what you do in the UK or western Europe?

Just to let you guys know... although, I guess it will be obvious when you test...

I've reinstated the re-test button. I've got a few messages from people asking me to return it... I listen to my users.

    Hi Azungu. Welcome.

Yes. TestMy is reliable for telling you what speeds you're getting. It tells you the "real" story, unlike the speed test tools the ISP's use.

There's some good reading material on the Home page here about why this site is better than others - go to the "Extras" pull down.

    Hey Jerry,

It's alright, I didn't take it the wrong way. I take all comments negative and positive. I appreciate your honesty.

I'm flattered. I've had many people tell me this over the years but to tell you the truth... as long as people support my advertisers I really don't want to ever have to charge anything. I have very strong convictions when it comes to what the Internet should be. It, in my opinion, is a place that should be free... it's OUR Internet. There are features and services that I could hold back for a 'premium' version but I want everyone to be able to use everything I create. What I want from you, more than your money, is for you to spread the word... that really is the best thing you can do for TestMy.net. TMN has completely grown by word-of-mouth. Keeping with this model and morals forces me to make the site better... to built the best possible service I can. If I don't, people aren't going to tell anyone. --- so far that mindset has been doing the trick.

6.12 and now 12.9 will remain in their current states. They have both been placed in archive status and only receive absolutely necessary tweaks to keep them running correctly. Sometimes server technologies and programming standards change and it requires minor tweaks to those versions... but the core programming for the versions I place in archive will remain functioning the the same as it did when it was finalized. So you can be assured that the stability will remain.

TestMy.net itself will always move forward. I understand that people become used to certain aspects of the site. Again, that's why I offer my older versions... to try to keep my die hard fans comfortable when I make huge changes. If I didn't progress the site the features that you've come to love would have never been created... this happens every time I make major changes. People hit me up with concerns but then... they end up converting their mindset over to the new design and liking it more in the end. I know this from my analytics. Trust me Jerry, once you get used to the changes you'll realize that it's totally for the better. Pages transition better, content is easier to read and understand and the client-side programming behind everything is compliant with the most up-to-date HTML5 standards. I truly couldn't be happier with the way it's turning out, I hope in the end you'll agree. Until that time, you're free to switch it up to the version you're most comfortable with.

Thank you for all the kind words. After your first post I wasn't really expecting that. I appreciate your support and I'm sure my moderators appreciate the praise as well... they are totally awesome and have really been a huge help to me over the years. I truly appreciate all the time and effort that my past and present moderators, admins, secretary, news anchors and sophist users have put into this community... I'm glad that others see this too. I build the speed tests but everyone who has ever posted here has built the community... that includes YOU!
    Cheers!

Agreed. For the most part, the only problems I've ever seen with my connection were due to some sort of poor transit between some connection in my ISP's network to some connection who knows where. What does bother me however is, as you've mentioned, the networks were designed so long ago to where you've got many redundant systems tying into a single failure point, or many going into few which causes issues such as slow speeds, or, which Verizon is currently overdue for this year, routing outages in NYC that take out 95% of my Internet connectivity completely but do not destroy speeds. If it's not that, you've also got plenty of older systems that just have not been invested in and are having to handle loads that they can take, but don't allow for smooth failover. Or for that matter, old systems that choke down at night because they were set up with too much oversubscription (such as my local Cable Company's network/backbone).

Then of course, there are providers who just don't plan their networks for double growth (Moore's Law, in perspective) or upgrade them fast enough for whatever reason. I know my second ISP, Frontier Communnications is one of these. Their services are known to slow down at night due to lack of transit capacity or overloaded routers during the night time hours. They're starting to fix all of that up now that they're *FINALLY* bringing out the bigger guns. My Frontier connection before the days of streaming and YouTube in HD was pretty solid. Come all of the big streaming services like Netflix, and higher quality video, I started seeing speeds dropping from 3Mbps down to 1Mbps at night, perhaps lower depending on the day as the edge router at the ISP got overloaded, the old SONET rings not having been upgraded, and so on.

I do know that part of the problem here is with an ISP saying they don't guarantee speeds (and none can), but if it's something that happens routinely according to events, or time of day it's something they have to work to fix up.

Upgrades have been getting done though, which is fortunately something that is being done here in the East. The problem is with old last mile infrustructure and underutilized long haul cable, and of course poor routing to other areas.

XP is easy to change the admin login if you have an install cd for it ?

Boot to the cd, when it asks if you want to install or repair hit 'enter' , this should locate the current installation, now hit the 'r' key , for repair

Windows will copy files, and reboot. Do not boot to cd , allow the machine to boot normally....

When you see the installation begin after the reboot, hit 'shift+F10' do not wait for installation it will overwrite the current installation.....

A command prompt will show up.

In the shell type ' control userpasswords2'

And you'll have access to all users and passwords on the machine , just change them.

For anyone trying to use this to cause someone else trouble , steal information or do damage , it's your butt not mine.

Does anyone know of a site or utility that can calculate a cpk or similar metric from download and upload speed measurements? A lot of us us are concerned about the variability of our speeds, but I have not seen a tool that will actually quantify it. Maybe Testmy.net could add this as a feature from data that is being collected combined with the speed that the member is paying for. In the meantine I am looking.

    Hey All,

Been awhile since I posted on this thread. The same wireless ISP ive had for 10 years just upgraded their service offerings in our area this spring. These speeds are pretty common, my average is 16.5 and my upload is usually more around the 2.2 mark. I have the 5G 10Max service at $65/month http://www.thewisp.net/services.asp#5G. Im assuming there is some bursting going on, but its always up this high. Actually their speeds have always been higher than the advertised plans. And they have no contracts. Someone before said that my ISPs packages were $155/month, and said that I was lying. Not so at all! Im pretty proud of this being that I live in the middle of nowhere, and have great service. They have a voip package too that we picked up about 6 months ago, which works like a normal land line. Cant tell the difference. (I know, land line right, well being that we live out of town, and our first child is on the way, I thought it would be good just in case a cell phone dies or something.)

On another note, My brother used to have the same ISP and then he moved to Colorado, can't get them there. But he was looking into becoming a reseller/franchise of the company and sounds like its going well so far. I guess theres not much start up costs, but they rely a lot on him to do most of the work. He's got about 20 people pre-sold for one access point location already. Im kinda bragging because I love these guys, have been great to us from day one.

And Larka, you will find that under some conditions of degraded signals coming into your house, they will show then speed as being good on your ISP's tools. Also, I don't know what their algorithms are, but you can watch their analog meter during times of signal interrupts (with signals valid or degraded) drop down tomzeronduring the test then display the result as the ending meter value, so they are throwing out the data that makes them look bad. I have no idea whatbtheirnrationale for that is since the tools are supposedly there to help a customer troubleshoot. Interrupts on this site result in a lower throughput reading after the test. There must be either poorly written or perhaps no regulations written that they conform to. I don't know how they get away with advertising the rates they are claiming. On average they never meet them. On my best days my speeds are 20% lower than what my ISP has promised as a minimum,Man's download speeds measured on TMN are typically 1/3 of what their tools says I'm getting.

Look at you numbers relative to your prior test results, and compare your results to your local ISPs speeds on this site, and to the ISPs average performance nationally. Once you've established what "good" is, it's easy to spot when there's an issue. my typical numbers are significantly lower than the national averages for Time Warner but usually 5-10% higher than my local average speeds on TMN.

****EDIT EDIT EDIT I just used the TCP Optimizer and it totally helped! boosted my Connection Speed to over 18Mbs and my download to 2.3Mbps so this is a moot post now by i'm leaving it up for now. Thank you guys!!!! EDIT EDIT EDIT***

So, quickly wanted to say hello and thank you guys for welcoming me here.

Okay, so I just switched my ISP from Century Link to Cox and purchased their 15Mb package. The Wireless and Wired work (hence i'm using the forums) and currently in Wired Mode.
Now, when I download something from the internet, such as a 90mb file from download.com, firefox tells me in the little download window that my speed is anywhere from 1Mbps to 2.2Mbps.
    (avg. 1.5-2)

This site says my max is 1Mbps and avg is like 800Kbps.

So, what gives? Also my connection speed is half what it should. Other sites range from 9Mbs to 21Mbs. but this say like 7Mbs.

Oh, and any tips for increasing my wireless speeds (I'm a gamer and use Skype a lot) such as tweaks and stuff would be very helpful.

Thank you guys in advance for any help. *phree c00ki3s*

I had an engineering prof that once gave our class a test where only the answer mattered; no credit for showing the work and though process. He said "Someday you'll have to get the right answer or you could kill somebody". Hahaha the class average on that test was 39%.
