might be your modem (RCA/Thompson DCM245)
i had the same modem but it was a rental from Comcast. i returned it like 5 times before i just told Comcast to keep there stupid modem and i just went to best buy and got me a linksys
oh the the best thing my comcsat bill is 4 dollars less
wired is the best way to go. i got AVG for virus scan. linksys (wrt54gs and befcmu10) here are my results :

my opinion
if you play online gaming (ps2, xbox) iw ould prefer higher speeds, but if you just do online surfing, email, music download, some less pretty good like 2mb(download) 256kb(upload) for a min.
