Frontier do not cease to amaze me with yet more issues! So recently I have been having issues with what I am going to call Semi-Disconnects on my DSL service, extreme ping times of 150ms and for DSL that SUCKS! I made the usual phone calls to get a response of "oh, we will look into that"... yeah right. I ran some software I use to diagnose issues with my connection to find out yet again its Frontiers network causing the issues as seen in the image I have also noticed a lot of comments in my modem connection logs like this "WED DEC 29 08:31:10 2010 LAN PC Unable to communicate with DNS Server. (error = 'connection timed out', count = 21)". So after a little research and testing I found out that Frontiers DNS servers are probably not very reliable, just like there network... anyway I run a local DNS server on my Windows Home Server which I did have set to use the DNS servers of my DSL Modem, obviously this is the issue and now I have reconfigured my DNS server to use the following servers. 8.8.4.4 Googles Open DNS 8.8.8.8 Googles Open DNS 208.67.220.220 OpenDns 208.67.222.222 OpenDns All of which are free and your more then welcome to drop the Google ones if your worried about Google, anyway I use all 4 so I have some redundancy if some go down and now my Ping times are back to where they should be and every single address is being resolved with no errors in my modem logs! You may find if your using any ISP being it cable, DSL, Dial up or whatever you may want to at least try changing your DNS settings to reflect some of the above, you may get an increase in speed, OpenDns also provide a free version of the software to do this for you if you do not have a DNS server of your own and can be found at opendns.com. Why I have a DNS server you may ask! well in a nutshell I have a lot of machines in my home with local resources that I need Domain Name Resolution for hence the DNS, it Caches all external requests speeding up my time as my computer does not need to go looking for it, I get almost a 2ms Response from the server which is fantastic! Enough of my toys already!! lol Anyways, I hope this may be able to help some of you out there in Puter Land! it helped me and I just wanted to share my findings with you..... Hope someone gets some use from it. Ohh I also added the results of the new DNS settings

From myself to you, hope you have a great Christmas with your loved ones and Friends! If you do not celebrate Christmas, then happy Holidays to you.

If your provider is saying you should get a certain speed then you should be within 80% of it or the advertised speed is BS. I think he is on Cable if he is with Armstrong as my Uncle has it in PA, Cable unlike DSL is not a dedicated line to the backbone, Lightspan or whatever they want to call it, it is a shared bandwidth with everyone else on that line. 1.6Mbps for cable is slow but without knowing your supposed connection it would be hard to say!

Yep, totaly agree with you, been communicating with a lot of people, regional, directors and many more. They got it in the end and I guess the speed increase was a gesture of good faith. Pretty happy now with the service, can't wait for it to go bad again and maybe get higher speeds! LMAO. Serious, it worked out pretty good. :::.. I tell yah, what a pain and I hate being an asshole but you have to become one to get anything done anymore.... Them guys would come around and plug there meter in to my line and tell me you have great speeds! then look at you like your a moron or something..... yeah the speeds from my house to the LightSpan are good, but that is all they are seeing..... lol Anyway, bad switch was the cause of the problem, its fixed so I am happy..... Happy Thanksgiving to you all...

Final update on this saga! It is now fixed and working like normal, my speed has not gone past or lower then 3.0Mbps all day and night! Only took 6 weeks to fix.... LOL
-
WOW, what a ride so far..... 4 Engineers at my door, could not find anything wrong, speeds to the Light-span are incredible and I am utilizing some 41% capacity to the Light-span which means I can safely go to 6.0Mbps if I want to. Last night they found an issue with a switch near where I live and this morning at 4:00AM they changed it out and re-configured the new one, so far today my speeds have not dropped below 3.0Mbps like they should be at..... The test is at 7:00PM tonight and I will then be able to verify if the fix was the issue. I have been in constant contact with the Operations Guys not far from me, I have been feeding them data including screen grabs of a wonderful software I have been using, and this is no way a plug but very helpful for anyone that may have issues with connectivity or they need to locate where they are bottle necking! I hope this is not a bad thing for me to do but you can search using google for software called VisualRoute2012, 15 days free trial with no restriction! I am going to buy it I like it so much!!! Anyway, will update later to let you all know whats going on, and if anyone else in Morgantown was having issues with Speed and connectivity! You are very welcome!!!!

3 Technicians, a GM and still the same, all hardware has been changed out, all 3 techs done the same thing and got the same results. They are telling me I can go to a higher plan of 6.0 Mbps if I want to pay the extra! <--- HA HA HA. I told the tech "whats the point in doing that if I still bottle neck at peak times?" his face looked like I stole his candy from him. So I still have my slowdowns, they have no clue why I am affected by this and no one else is, I did explain I know others around here with issues and they informed me they know nothing about it, they tried blaming my equipment, my wires blah blah blah, now they blame network congestion and there is nothing they can do about it.... Here is something they have posted on there own website. found here... http://frontier.com/products/ProductOverview.aspx?type=1&p=2

Still the same, slows to a crawl between 6:00PM and Midnight.
-
Ok, after another nasty e-mail to Frontiers President! lol... That was yesterday evening I got a call from the GM for this area and they came out today to do tests on my line and said your right, would seem like a routing issue. Anyway he made a call and they re-built the crossovers which may have got messed up during the Verizon to Frontier switch over. I am no longer showing up as being in Kansas, my Ping times are lower and my speed, well I will have to wait between the hours of 6:00PM and midnight to find out. I hope this is now fixed. Ohh they also brought me a shiny brand new wireless modem Lots of pretty lights so I can watch them if my speed goes down I will have something to look at. Just need some Christmas tree balls on it and I am good. lol

Speeds have gone from 3.3Mbps down to 0.4Mbps..... Online game play is not worth a shit, neither is the downloading.... Go Frontier, bunch of morons.

So I was a Verizon DSL customer and now they sold to Frontier and I have heard horror stories, of which I am now starting to see. I live in Morgantown and my DSL used to route to Clarksburg some 40 miles away with a ping time of 39Ms (average). Now frontier have made the change completely and now my details on pings and speed tests show up as Frontier IP addresses as appose to Verizon (as of yesterday), now I am being routed out of Virginia and or Kansas with a ping time of almost 100Ms. I called technical support whom done some ping tests (Average 97Ms) and then ran a speed test and told me my speed was fine, of which it is at 3.3Mbps on a 3.0/0.8 plan, I told him I don't have any issues with my speed its my Latency and he told me they are both the same! LMFAO. For those whom do not know what Latency is (ping) I shall explain, it is the time your packet takes to leave your machine, reach the destination and return again, a PING... or in laymens Terms. I can run at 6 MPH and be in my home town in 20 minutes, I can run 6 MPH and be in Clarksburg in 6.5 hours, Same speed but take longer due to distance, Latency. So anyway, I am being told I can't open a trouble ticket due to this BS, anyone else seen this so far? this happened to me as of Yesterday when they did the change over. Waiting on a call back from a Manager..... as if that will happen. Will keep you updated on this issue.
-
FAP is what get you, even downloading at speeds like that you still can't get yourself a decent movie without being hit, and for $200 a month I would expect a 10ms Ping time. At the end of the day its still satellite and the latency is the biggest issue with it. Great speed..... I like that. But certainly not for $200 and a 625Mb Bucket.
-
I am still enjoying my DSL.... so glad it came to my area and I could get rid of Hughesnet. I still pop in here once in a while just to see if people are having this issues some of us used to get!
-
Sounds to me you might be too far out in the DSL loop, when they come out do they test your line for signal and noise? This might be the case you may want to look into but was getting issues with speed and a tech came out and disconnected all the other phone lines in the house, he informed me my modem was working at 100% due to the noise my extra unused wiring was picking up! acting like an antenna as such. I recently rewired my house as I do not have a land-line only Dry Loop DSL and hooked my Vonage up to feedback onto a separate line for the phones. Now I get my advertised speeds or within 90% of it most times. We just got bought out by Frontier and I am still running on Verizon equipment until the change out. Have them come out and test everything, there is no way that guy can leave your house and say that speed is ok! Want some action real quick? contact your local BBB, watch them get it fixed then.
-
One thing with DSL like most other services you have to be careful of is noise on the line! My DSL service worked great, just over 3.1Mbps and up to 3.3Mbps..... Here is some information before I go on. I am on the furthest point on our Loop! they had to install what they call bridges but to you and I would be a range expander, Technically I am about 1/2 - 3/4 of a mile outside the loop, but I have it and it works great. Recently my service would start to go out on me, just die... then I would get a really slow connection, I called and spoke to someone in Malaysia then someone in India and no one knew what the problem was but they could see a problem, 2 weeks later a DSL Tech comes out to look at my issue. After being here for 15 minutes he plugged his gizmo into the box on the outside of my house, he said I should be able to get 7Mbps if they would allow it, that's how good the signal is, then we went into my house and he plugged into the outlet feeding my DSL modem... Ohh boy was it bad! My Modem was running at 100% capacity, they prefer 80% or less, turns out there is a lot of excess wire running around my house acting like an antenna, I took him to the distribution point and he disconnected everything but the one point, does not bother me as I am on a dry loop (No Phone Service). We went back in, turned the modem off and tested again, now I am showing 40% capacity on my line and can if supplied get 7Mbps, my internet is running so much better and on a daily basis I see a connection of 3.3Mbps down and about 0.8Mbps up, I am happy! So what you may want to look at is your wiring to start off with, remove anything you don't need to start with or just unplug your service outside of your house and plug direct into it, just to test with. Other things you may want to check is, make sure you have NO FILTER inline with the modem, you should only have filters inline with your phones, move anything that might create noise (transformers and so on) away from your phone line and modem, do not run phone lines including the one for your modem parallel to power wires, cross at 90° only. Hope you get it fixed, if not call and have an DSL tech come to your house. Good luck.
