  1. ok so i realize there is a 7990 coming out from amd as a gpu....any ideas if this will blow away the 6990 or is it just a minimal increase of performance with a lower power consumption or something.

and is there anything newer than a 590 from nvidia coming out to blow anything out of the water? if not i know what im going with.

unless someone has some tips, i'd be going with a 6990 as a gpu....like i said, unless someone has a good reason not to or there is something q1 this year coming to blow it away.

definately will be lower nm so less power / heat with similiar performance i'd imagine nothing mind blowing i'm sure

  2. Sweet, I bet two thirds of that 5k was early return points.( Bonus Point Calc ) Huzza!

Do any of your guys' machines throw off a lot of heat? I got a Pentium 4 which i don't fold on that heats the room more in 2 hours then my newer computer does in a day. California 40 degree mornings and 70 degree days this week mean heat isn't a bad thing though. Stanford did mention that folding machines are turned off in the summer months. Just wondering.

my heavily OC'd Phenom II X4 does it heats up to about 60C and can heat my bedroom up to 90F in about 30 minutes which is why i only fold on it at night when the cool air can keep my room temp down

my other two systems have moderate OC's and stay much cooler even while folding they don't rise above 100F

  3. thinking about (if the gf wont kill me for using even more electricity!) building a decent/cheap computer to fold 24/7. along with me just literally 2 minutes ago setting up my ps3 for folding. (gonna hook up the laptop hdmi to tv and watch some hulu) lol.

on a side note, im desperately trying to convince the gf i "need" a new computer. its gonna have a 6990 in it along with either an ivy core (if i can wait) or a 3930k i7. so considering that which folding client should i use on that one (if i actually get to do the build)?

edit/ on a side note, i remember mudman you helped out alot on my first system for folding...if i get to do what i plan with new computers this year, you gonna be ready to help out some more?

mudman is always ready and willing to help! XD

  4. i get similar results atm

  5. Mud: I found a quadcore client to out perform 4 single core clients. Hyperthreaded cpus are not recommended unless there are more then 2 physical cores, else double the work gets done in half the time and science slows waiting for your results. I would recommend against running 5 threads on a 4 thread machine as collisions of "is cpu busy? Yes" would happen all the time, unless your already taking this into account. In fact on the hyperthreaded 4 physical 8 logical core i7s, seven cores at full load out perform eight cores at full load.

TriRan: Only the smp client with its large memory usage and high system requirements has an early return bonus. The idea of "early bonus" came from bigadv units that required 20-100 megabyte uploads verses 1mb results file from your radeon. Points FAQ said:

Vijay Pande said, donors really pick up in the winter months while folding machines are turned off in the hot summers.

oh okay! are there any special -args i need to use to get the bonus points then?

  6. Team is still picking up steam with you guys adding more power great work! We are starting to climb back up the rankings at a pretty good speed now. One bonus for me is all my computers are in the basement which can get a bit chilly in the winter. With FAH going 24/7 my feet stay nice and toasty. I don't even have the heaters turned on :D

lol i know! i've been leaving my window open 24/7 and my computer is generating enough heat to keep me warm while i'm on it! :P

btw am i not getting early turn in bonuses? i'm getting roughly 500 pts per WU my video card chews out and it doesn't appear to be offering any bonuses of any sort
