  1. Tonight my Zyxel router lost its connection and then went in and out. I discovered that the secure SSID I created was gone, the admin password was reset to the default and it was sending out the default Zyxel unsecure wireless signal. I also discovered that the primary and secondary DNS servers were changed by Comcast to 75.75.75.75 and 75.75.76.76 respectively. I looked up and found out about DNSSEC and I guess Comcast finally converted us to this without any notification. I had no idea about all this coming at all, so was caught off guard.

Would this DNS change cause this sort of disruption to the router?

its a router modem combo? they could have reset it remotely

  2. Now it seemed to lock... then right at the end of the first test it sped up. Ran two more tests, third one I got my full speed.

Annoying. I've seen it do this before briefly but it always returns to normal before I can figure it out.

seems like your experiencing a WAN slowdown which in all my experience usually occurs on the router especially when they've been up for extremely long periods of time. have you tried a simple soft reset of the router/modem but the router at the least routers have RAM and cpu's just like any other electronic device and RAM can get full due to memory leaks or what have you

i typically can tell this is happening by trying to access the router config page during the issue and see if it comes up lickity split or not

  3. This is rediculous my Belkin Wireless N router is sucking almost 12 Mb Speed out of my connection and I found out teh New routers Belkin has none are IPV6 Compatable so Belkin just Xed themselves off my list of future Products.

Sickening Directly wired to modem and i get 27-30 meg consistantly wired or wireless through router an d 20 is max I can get.

What is Belkin Thinking by not building IPV6 coompatability into any of their routers? At least I was informed of this 1 month ago when I first decided my router was weezing my juice and needed to be put down.

Linksys seems to have Budget Routers and Extreme performance ones Ipv6 ready so does Netgear from what I seen at Wal-Mart I guess it is time to do the hunt down max performance-Dependability for lowest price game going so I can fix this speed hog within a month sickens me that I am getting 1/2 of what I pay for not like Comcast isnt alrady robbing me blind now my router is working the conspiracy to hold me down and keep me slow.

i'm actually using a d-link router and am getting 100% of my connection over wireless just as i would wired. basically your wireless sync rate needs to be considerably higher then your cap to achieve your max speeds otherwise you'll see results like your gettting

if my computer is not connected atleast at 270Mbps wirelessly then i can't achieve 60Mbps of actual data transfer

i'm using 400Mbps wireless N Products though so unless my wireless channel gets extremely crowded i'm good

you can also turn off CMTS protection which protects other channels from your connection interfering with them. there are a lot of tweaks that can be done to help you get a little faster speed on wifi i'm just not sure if belkins routers allow you to change such settings

  4. How wide spread is 100Mb in any area of the USA ? Not much . The future for that will be more then well past the EOL of anything not even on the market yet as far as residential equipment is concerned.

Save your bucks , get some "old" equipment, learn how to use it, wire the place up cat6 plenum and have a coke and a smile.

in Tennesse you can get residential Gbit :P

  5. This is why I still use my Logitech MX5500. I like the feel of a regular keyboard. But as I get more used to the thin keyboard on the iMac I don't find myself on on my mini using the MX5500. Although, I do have a very unorthodox typing method... I think it came about first because I didn't like typing the way teachers wanted me to. Second, I think it was my natural way of protecting myself from carpal tunnel... both of my hands use both sides of the keyboard, sometimes, hard to explain. I also look at the keys allot. It's a weird style but I can type 60-90wpm that way and well over 100wpm in programming... home row style I can only achieve 35-45wpm.

I think that the new thin apple keyboard has made me faster actually. Not at first but after I got used to it. The keys are more sensitive but also precise at the same time... you'd think it would be easy to hit the wrong key but it isn't. Sometimes I feel my finger brush the wrong key but check and it seems to never register. You have to hit the key just right with purpose and they do with without interfering with regular typing. I also seem to flow without having to lift my fingers as much. I always thought the new apple keyboards were beautiful in design but I'm starting slowly I'm starting to favor overall.

... ideally my next input device would just connect to my mind. Screw typing!

    Amen!

  6. TriRan. I thought about that too - getting a wireless on and not using the wireless but there aren't many of them with more than 4 ports either. I'll checkout the ones you mentioned above. thanks

I'll go on Cisco's website again. They're product picker on the website isn't the easiest thing to use. I need more than 4 ports Of the RVS4000. I'm sure they make an 8 port.

why don't you use a 4 port router with a gbit switch to expand the ports? i'm sure that'd be cheaper lol

  7. so, all in all, i think ive got it figured out. thanks guys, couldnt have done it myself. (as far as certain parts/price and ideas). one last thing....would i see any advantage from 2 or 3 SLI'd 580s? i know if i had 3 580s i would but would 2 580's be better? although im kind of heart set on the 590 right now. (except im afraid to OC it...saw and heard some horror stories about them. but i think it was just a driver and user disagreement lol.)

you might especially with folding SLI in games though is really not all its cracked up to be, its buggy, hardly ever works and patches break it all the time both driver and game/program developer

i don't think i'd mess with it if it were me

  8. a faster router in general might help a little, routers have ram, and cpus so a more up to date router with a faster CPU and more ram will be able to handle more simultanious connections at a single time easier you may not notice a speed increase but if you have any sort of network slowdown when lots of requests from multiple computers go out or come in then you will surely see improvement there. also if you do go with a Gbit router/switch you will a significant increase in local file transfer speeds although that won't really show in your real world connection because as you said its limited by the modem

  9. just curious as i've heard that the 2600k does very well on air cooling. in fact ive heard some people say that they've OC'd it and kept it well under the 70 degree C core temp.which hell, ive always had air cooling (hard to change to liquid as who knows how much i will forget about it or whatever haha.) and with the amount of people on the net who have air cooling (and screens to post temp and videos and what not) i believe air cooling is decent enough.

now if i went with a liquid cooling system i'd like my gpu to have one too, but as thats not really much of an option on the model i've chosen i just kind of strayed away from the whole idea.

here is a link to just one of the reviews for the cooler i chose.

    http://www.overclock...r_hp1216b/4.htm

suprisingly it was one of the best air coolers in a few sites and quite average and decent in others.

ok guys im sorry for so many long posts. but here is a config that will best the others by far.

got a 80+ 1,000 watt psu for my future gpu escapades haha.

    a 60gb SSD (corsair) and a 500GB HDD

and the other stock options (such as optical drive) will be upgraded myself later. as well as the OC.

and as always i went with any deals i could find. there is free shipping and the tax section says there is none...and a 5% discount. which means this will cost 1960.80 and from newegg for a 24 inch 1920x1080 monitor it will be around another 140 bucks...so all in all id say thats a good deal.

    looks good to me

  10. i use a closed loop liquid cooler like RTB was talking about its fantastic i haven't had any problems with it at all except for the radiator getting clogged with dust which happens no matter what type of cooler you use

keeping the heat away from the cpu is always a good idea imo my block stays relatively cool while my radiator will be at 50-60C maybe even hotter i've never checked it

  11. I know lots of people bash on century link from them being crooks to over selling their bandwidth capabilities to horrible customer service to this that or the other but I have not really ever had a major problem with them and I live in a town of 900 people in the middle of no place and no stop lights and after upgrading to their new 25mb bonded dsl I couldn't be more happy and I was the first one in my whole county of 20,000 people to get this new service and as far as I know am still the only one. When the tech arrived he had his supervisor with him because they had never installed a bonded servive before, they were here about 2 hours hooking everything up and has pretty much run smoothly ever since.

    Congrats!

  12. this is gonna be a gaming, video encoding, multimedia, etc. lol. basically a beast for anything im doing. also, gotta be future proof for quite a while (haha like anything computer related is future proof anymore). basically this is a one time buy that is gonna need to last me for quite some time.

also, why not use ati 6990 for folding? youre saying the gtx 590 is a better choice just for folding or all around? one thing i dont like about the 590 is it uses more power and while ive always been an nvidia gpu and amd cpu person i was switching it up lol. intel cpu and amd gpu (for performance reasons).

so why is nvidia better? just curious cause i was going for nvidia, then got shifted to the 6990 after a little net browsing.

edit/ SORRY FOR THE LONG LIST!!!

heres what i had planned on IF i went with cyberpower. (i have a 10% discount at the store i work at so i can get a 22 inch or 24 inch monitor there).

blake could touch more on the ati vs nvidia for folding thing nvidia folds better then ATI atm something to do with CUDA

not saying it wouldn't fold well just not as well as a comparable nvidia card

  13. 2 grand probably. i have a few set ups (after the 5% discount code) that hit right there, and they have a 3930k, amd 6990, and mid range 8gb ddr3 ram. so not too bad, just gotta make sure that the monitor/shipping doesnt go over too bad lol.

i like custom builds better (if i do it myself) but hey im open to cyberpower. they seem good.

If your going to go fold I wouldn't use ati
