  1. One other thing. When I used the smart test option on this site. the results were very poor download speeds. When I usted 100 M and other larger blocks of random data, I got much higer speed results. Any explanation or understanding you can give me would be much appreciated. Thank you, Andres.

thats because of the higher latency your seeing testing from out of the country. higher latency need larger test sizes to allow the connection to "ramp up" and reach the peak download speed

as for the unstable connection your seeing this could be many things. it could be anything from a faulty cat5 cable to a bad amplifier on the hosts node a bad switch, network card, many many things it could be things even outside your control what i would start with is seeing if its anything on your local side try replacing some cat5 cables you might even try changing out modems if possible... modems do burn out after time

your connection seems pretty solid though i would try testing from the dallas mirror if you can it's the closest one to you you might see good results to that one although for some of your tests your speeds are quite impressive also try testing 15-30MB tests that should be plenty of ramp up time without having to wait a long time for the downloads to finish

  2. I'm new here. Just wanted to say hi. I live en Mexico, in the Yucatan Peninsula. I was checking my broad band and I found this site. I'm paying for 3 Mbs, but the portal of my 2wire modem shows that I have 6016 kbps. But I've never even goten close in speed test on the internet. But once I downloaded something from microsoft and the info box during the download said I was downloading at almost that speed. I hope I can say that? I read the rules. Well, that's it. Just wanted to introduce myself. Andres.

    Welcome to the site Andres,

in the portal of your modem your seeing the sync rate of your modem.. just because a modem syncs at a speed doesn't necessarily mean you'll get that speed it just means that's what you were provisioned by the ISP

  3. Thanks everyone.

What software would I use to do a soft reset of the cable modem. I have a separate Router that I communicate with (the D-link) in the diagram I put a link to above. But I don't know how to reset the modem other than unplugging it. I'll take a look at at Warner's RoadRunner support info tomsee if I can find anything.

MudMan..when you run Automator, how do you communicate with your modem? My cable modem is outboard of my router.

TriRan-it's the Motorola Surfboard SB5101 model referenced above. I have a network diagram link in my original post showing how everything is hooked up.

Time Warner swapped my cable modem a few months ago while troubleshooting a performance problem. Same model. Only the old one would run for many many months without ever having to be reset. The old modem had nothing wrong with it; the performance issue was related to signal levels, but they swapped it anyway.

your modem and router need to be on the same subnet or....your router needs to have a bridged subnet of the modem (much more difficult) at which point you can access the modems configuration page and click the reset button to soft reset the modem

you can probably find the modem config at http://192.168.100.1

  4. The network the modem is on is 1 important factor...

Our modem constantly LOCKS UP and its because the network IS UNSTABLE and when the signal level gets TOO LOW,it causes the modems transmit to INCREASE and if it gets TOO HIGH,it loses sync and locks........

Pain in the ass but ITS NOT THE EQUIPs FAULT,its the ISPs!!

i rarely reset my equipment i think my modem was up last time for around 80 days or so i did have to reset it because i needed to take an attenuator off but otherwise i wouldn't have reset it at all. which modem do you have?

  5. Has anyone been able to get slapd running properly on the latest debian ?

Iv'e worked through just about every error anyone has ever had with an ldap server on either ubuntu or debian , and a few on centos lol

Installing via apt-get , gets me no initial configuration. Running

    dpkg-reconfigure slapd

    gets me

Because there is no core.ldif to copy

Iv'e purged everything and used the package manager , that brings me to a plethora of other issues.

Thats the latest. Just looking to see who has this server running on debian and if so , whats up doc ?

haha i'm still running debian 5.7 so not sure man

  6. Thanks for the insight mudmanc4. At least this validates that I am not alone.

I just wish the ISP's would admit when their peering relationships were having issues. The excuse that "we only guarantee 100mbps to our node" is a joke. What is the point of having a fast connection if I can only use it to connect to your network, and nothing else.

try testing from another location, there are now 3 servers to test from in the US... i to have noticed from time to time there are routing issues to the main server (dallas tx one) so i just test from the west or east coast and everything shows perfectly fine

  7. This is something I want in the next version of my graphs. I have no problem doing this now but I currently can't do this (accurately) if the graphs are displaying multiple plots. Like upload and download speed on the same graph. This is because they share the information of the x-axis. If you click the little arrows in your results it will filter by test type. Once you've filtered it down to either just upload speed or download speed you'll see the date information when you hover.

    post-2-0-01125300-1332728584.png

clicking the red and blue arrows in the results will filter by test type... then date and time will be shown on the graph

    see...

Because they currently share that axis... if I put the date in there, it wouldn't match because the the upload and download tests aren't always taken at the same time. I'm working on it though. Just be patient with me and realize that I'm a single person programming all of this.

Thank you for your patronage, please tell your friends! :)

not only that but a father to top it off! hes a busy busy man lol

btw welcome to the site Woodlane!

  8. it will a smallish building with a large generator outside, it's probably not the issue it may lie more with the modem although its motorola and i have the highest regard for their equipment it could be the modem or router or network card or even network cable that is causing the issue it might even be something on the software side of your pc such as a power saving profile for your network card

  9. Iv'e had there 50 Mb down / # Mb up for around a year. They now offer 105 Mb down / 5 Mb up

So it seems they bumped us up from 50 to 60 Mb down and kept the up the same. I would grab the 105 Mb down , but not for 179.00 / month , not a chance with only 5 Mb up , no way. Hell if they would go 50 /50 , or 100 / 50 , Id'e jump on it in a minute. I'de host everything here instead of paying for a server elsewhere. I'm sure eventually this will become a reality.

    Either way , nice surprise.

that happened to me not to long ago the upload increased with my download but it was such a small increase it was kind of a joke

  10. alrighty then slowfreddy , yet again out of the blue I enjoy a smile , and it's your fault ! thank you

You can make a" hackintosh " if you so desire , this allows you to run OSX on your x86 machine. Although I've not done it , so I cannot say if it's worth the trouble.

Iv'e use apples on and off since roughly 1880 something, in the 5th grade we had a computer class in which were all the original macintosh machines. I might be wrong on the date, it's been 25 years or so.

Been a regular use for the last 5-7 years. As the releases come out , Iv'e learned to wait, this time i waited because the discussion leaned toward " the new OS looks like an iPad close. Which turned me off.

So aside my quirks, waiting long enough for any serious patches if needed, the time would be closing in on a decision to change, if I was going to at all.

I already do not like the fact that the OS comes from the app store. I know what there doing , or at least my idea, there trying to save billions on marketing paper plastic , shipping and everything that goes with releasing such a popular item for the world. Fine ,great , I'm all for forward thinking as Jobs always was, but please allow me to burn this thing to get a fresh install. Which I would normally do , when I feel like it to be blunt. Yes i know , I can burn the thing. Just bitching. feels good , and the wife appreciates me getting it out on something other than herself :)

Anyhow , looking for inout from those users that are already familiar with Lion. And those that have test driven mountain lion. Or hell also from those that want to know more about getting a much more stable , clean , faster , and all around lovely computing experience. hahaha

wow they had mac's in 1880? :P i have run hackintosh before it worked really well actually everything ran even photoshop which was supposed to be a pita to get working

it wasn't all that difficult to get installed either there are quite a few guides out there and if you buy hardware thats compatible you can even install vanilla mac, that wasn't the case with my hackintosh build

aside from hackintosh i don't have any experience with lion so i'll just post my screenshots and be on my way :P

  11. Only issue I have with blocking ads , is so many people that we rely on getting information from , rely on ads to fund there sites. Many of which are increasingly finding it more difficult to continue , even though they might have a large user base.

Other then this , yes by all means pay attention to the host file. I'm not really sure why discussions about the host file are so few , the file is one of the most important in the system , and can be manipulated by many different programs , good and bad to achieve different results.

your average user doesn't even know it exists let alone how to use it :P

  12. Welcome to testmy.net rickyrescue , jump in wherever you want , everyone here is ready to talk tech and bandwidth , and whatever else you have on your mind.

    2nd that!

  13. Oh I am NOT the happy camper. Water cooler went bad, or there was a part they had to ad to my computer ot make it work, I am almost sure that its the problem. That 20 dollar part. Got up a started my computer, Front of it was white, Got a boot error saying "cpu fan error" Googled, Tried all the fixes. No luck. So I am going back to air cooling. Had to order a mother board bracket for the block and fan.

Honestly, Not sure I will ever go back to liquid cooling. My parts will be in friday. So it will be up and running by the weekend, Which is fine. Will be intesting to see the diffrence between liquid and air cooling on my set up and the way I run my computer. That will have lots to do with my choices If I go back or not.

Water coolers imho can be such a pain. Or atleast thats my experience. Its cheeper for me to fix it than send it back in. The fix was only 20 bucks. Wont take 20 min once I have my parts. Just chalk it all up to learning more. Hate this laptop, So In a week or so, I will get her up and running, get pics done, Upload them, Hope everyone is fine. See you all in about a week, time to catch up on my reading and take a break from the computer world.

ouch that sucks man ive had my corsair h50 running nonstop for about a year now with no issues sorry to hear you had some

  14. Is there a way to tell how much of the power supply the computer is using? I mean I have 650w power supply, is there something that would tell me how much the computer is using or is that a dumb question? Wait strike the dumb question remark. IMHO, there is no such thing as a dumb question. Its how we learn.

Yea I have a 120 push pull on my radiator, Nice setup. Cable management I leaned ALMOST the hard way. The case I originally got, after doing some research on youtube was not a good case. Poor cable management. I called the company that night, changed my case, I am sooooo glad I did. Cable management was better. The way my motherboard is, it was a bit tough getting the sata drives put it. I mean hooked to the motherboard. They had to route the main wire harness right beside the hookups for the sata drive. No big deal really. Got the job done, but wish it was a tad easier to access those hookups for the sata.

The rest of the managemt of wires just kicks ass. Here is a link to my case to kinda explain it better. OOPS. Forgot they embed the youtube video. The guy is wrong about being able to put 2 120s at the top. It only has one.

there is no way to measure total power consumption unless you have some sort of outside meter hooked up but i know from reviews that my video card uses about 191W under full load because they metered it during the tests they did

btw thats a nice case i have something similar mine is coolermaster aswell so is my PSU

  15. thanks man! i also have spares laying around i have 3 or 4 spare cpu's that are the right socket for my MB laying around plus 8 GB of DDR3 gskill ripjaw i got for a shell shocker deal for like 29.99 with free shipping :P

and yeah everything you observed was correct i forgot i have made a couple changes, due to the push/pull on my radiator i had mounted on the back i could only have one door fan so i changed my setup a tad i put the radiator on my door instead and was able to get all the fans installed it's got 120mm fans all around it has slots for 140mm fans tho i just didn't feel like paying the extra money for them and i love cases like this where you can manage the cables really well thats my favorite thing about building a computer

anywho i think my PSU needs to be replaced its about two years old now and is not providing the power i need, its only a 550W psu and i never intended on running this graphics card with it the video cards is taking up almost 200W under full load and when that happens i can actually hear the strain on my psu the fan kicks up and it makes me cringe a little lol the gpu i was running before was an Nvidia 9800GTX+ basically the equivilant of a 260GTX it was a lot less card than this 5870 is you can actually see the old video card in that 2nd picture its about 2" shorter too lol

    '

all in all i'm running 8 120mm case fans

    3 exhaust ( 2 top 1 rear )

    3 intake ( 1 side 1 bottom 1 front )

and 2 120mm fans on my cpu in push pull style setup on the 2nd fan slot in my door
