Hi All, As WinXP will soon no longer be supported by MS, I want to set up my computer to dual boot either WinXP or Win7. Yes I want to keep my WinXP as I have a lot of older programs that XP runs great that Win7 does not. And yes, my motherboard and CPU/GPU can handle Win7. That being said: I will purchase an additional 4 GB of memory to give me a total of 8 GBs. I will also purchase second HD for which to put Win7 on, and of course Win7 SP1 (64 bit) OS DVD. Technical information I have found almost seems too simple. Basically what I have read is to set the CMOS to boot from the DVD. Install the second HD and boot my Win7 DVD. Supposedly, Win7 setup/install will detect that WinXP is installed on the other HD and will then set the system up to give me the option of OS to load when it boots. Of course I need to tell the setup to use the new HD for Win7 install. Also would I then set the Win7 HD as my boot drive in the CMOS ? Is it as simple as it sounds ? I understand I will need to load my motherboard specific drivers, graphic drivers, sound drivers, etc., as one would for a fresh install of a new OS. I currently have my WinXP on a single HD partitioned as drives C/D/E/F/G. I have always partitioned my HDs so specific partitions are for specific type of programs. Keeps it easier to clean up and defrag smaller drive partitions. Assuming the above dual boot Win7 install will work, what will my system identify the new HD as ? Will it become drive H: ? If I partition the Win7 HD into two drives, do they become H: and I: ? This I’m not sure of as I remember years ago, a second HD would always be inserted after drive C: and become D:. If that would happen I’m sure it would screw up my XP registry as partitions would no long correspond to actual program locations. I hope someone can answer this or give me a reasonable solution, as I could find no information on this on the web. Just for info (as I’m sure someone will ask), I currently have a three-year-old computer with: MB: ASUS P8P67-M (P67 B3 Rev) I already updated BIOS to latest. GPU: NVIDIA GeForce 550 TI (1 GB) P/S: Coolmaster Silent Pro Gaming 80, 700 Watt CPU: Intel I5-2500 3.3 GHz quad core CPU cooling: Asetek 550LC Liquid Cooling Mem: 4GB (2GBx2) DDR3/1333MHz Dual Channel That should be enough system info for any questions about it. Thanks in advance to any help or suggestions.

Suddenlink tried to pull the same thing on me some months ago. Their tester never showed any slowdown and tech support would not take any action because their tester was consistant speed test during peak evening hours. My speed at the time would drop to less then 4 Mb/s, which was about 10% of my normal speed. I used my packet sniffer built into my old Sygate firewall and monitored the trafic log to determine where the test packets were coming from. Then using reverse lookup on the IPs, I determined they came from within Suddenlink's own backbone of servers and never once came from outside their backbone, so the test never showed any slowdown due to peak evening usage. TMN was giving me the true story of the speed slowdown. I presented this information to the maintenance superviser as normal tech support was a waste of time. Within two weeks, my speed during those hours was back to normal as apparently they changed their routing, added more equipment, or fixed the problem. Obviously, Suddenlink was the cause of the bottleneck. There was alot more history to this story, but I kept it short. Good luck...

And today, speed is back to normal for me. Must have been some temporary routing/bottleneck slowdown.

I have the same problem with the Dallas server. For months I've been getting around 40 Mb/s and today I get less than 8 Mb/s. East and West coast tests are giving around 18-20 Mb/s.

Google Malware - worst malware to hit osx ? -

This is one of the reasons I still use an older version of Sygate Personal Firewall. I can view traffic logs, packet, system & security logs, catch application hyjacking, and I can set up custom advanced rules to allow or disallow applications/programs to communicate via the internet over different ports and protocols. Its been very effective and along with my antivirus program, has kept my system very secure. I also frequently check my task manager for any processes that I do not recognize and find out what they are and why my system needs them. I hate programs that frequently access the internet when I don't think they have any business in doing so. I will then block them and usually it has no adverse effects. I have also started using DuckDuckGo for my search engine, which does not track nor store any of my searches. I won't touch Google again because of the data storage and its relationship with our current administration. -
I had the default set for Dallas, I then will usually select a 30 MB test, which I did. When I selected the size, the page seemed to stall for maybe 3-4 seconds and when it displayed the test bar, it was in the last third of the test. Normally when I select the size, a new page is immediately displayed with the entire test bar viewable and I can usually tell by how fast it goes as to what my connection speed is. Thank for all your work to keep our ISPs honest.

Ran a test to Dallas a little while ago. I normally get around 40 Mb/s to that location. It appeared my browser stalled when I started the test, then when it displayed the test page, there was about 25% left of the test bar. Wish this was my real speed....

I see an item missing. None ! I use no mobile device and don't intend too and much better off for it. Cheers ! -
I had a similar issue some years ago. Was related to the GPU card not be seated well or possible slot, card edge problem. When my wife dusted off the computer, she also dusted off the rear cables and found out just slight movement of the video cable caused the problem as it was moving the internal card. Cleaning the card edge, and reseating the card corrected the problem. Also was carefull not to move cables in rear of computer anymore and did my own dusting....lol.

I guess the problem fixed itself, testing ok now.

This past week been getting around 40 Mbps with default of Dallas. Today runnning a 10Mb test I finally aborted it as it was taking forever. Tests to Seattle or DC was giving around 20 Mbps. This one from Dallas a few days ago..

I haven't looked into this for a number of years. But, it used to be all IPs were dynamic unless you paid extra for a static IP. If it is dynamic you would need to disconnect your modem for a few days and then once you reconnect you should be assigned a different IP address. This worked for me a couple years back as I shut my system down when I went on vacation for a week and when I return I had a different IP address.

I still run Win XP and use IE8 for my browser and have no problems at all. Plenty fast in my opinion.

Tried switching to west/east coast servers and got the following errow message...tried a few times. There appears to be an error with the database. If you are seeing this page, it means there was a problem communicating with our database. Sometimes this error is temporary and will go away when you refresh the page. Sometimes the error will need to be fixed by an administrator before the site will become accessible again. You can try to refresh the page by clicking here

You are absolutely right, the Second Amendment has nothing to do with hunting or having a thrill shooting guns. It has to do with the right of the people to insure there will never be another tyrannical government dictating our lives. Look at history and every time there was a tyrannical dictator, you know who they were, the first action they take is to disarm the populace. Those who continue to push the socialist/communist agenda want to take away the guns are now using children as their political shields because of the actions of a psychotic madman. A gun is nothing but a tool, an instrument, not unlike a vehicle, knife, club, axe, etc. The problem is the social degeneration of the people with violent movies (Hollywood) , violent computer games, poor parenting, resulting is a total lack of respect or feeling for the lives of others. Just my two cents…..

Nevermind, I found it listed in very small text across the top of the page. Before it was displayed when I selected the download test.

My experience with ATT was not too good when I tried their DSL a couple years ago. I was told I would get 6 Mbps and I never got over 1.5 Mbps. They gave all kinds of excuses from syncing to provisioning of the lines and nothing helped, I found out that I was lied to about the speed and the best I could hope for was 2 Mbps at my location which was a few miles from the dslam, much to long a distance. If your dslam is not close to your location, you will never get acceptable speeds. I finally connected to cable with a bundle package and been mostly happy for the past two years. Just my thoughts...

When i logged on today to check my speed, there was no selection for Central, Western, Eastern locations, only test size selections. The test location was useful in determining bottlenecks of my ISP with traceroutes to different parts of the country. What is the TMN location now, Houston, TX...?? thanks

Is Suddenlink the speed problem or other issues ?
HubCity replied to HubCity's topic in General Discussion
Suddenlink sent me an email reply, that they had problems with a server in Dallas, but it should be fixed by now. Not sure if it is fixed as I just ran a test to Central USA on TMN. I have no equip connected from my comp to the high speed modem and I use direct cable connect. Mon Dec 17 2012 @ 3:13:04 pmUS 10 MB 3.46Mbps432 kB/s HubCity 4609278807 I also just ran West coast and East Coast on TMN and got 20-27 Mbps. Something wrong with that Central test from my location. I'll give it another day and recontact the Suddlink maint supervisor if it continues. -
Is Suddenlink the speed problem or other issues ?
HubCity replied to HubCity's topic in General Discussion
Thanks for the info about test sites. I have always just used the default of Central USA. As I stated I'm south of Abilene, TX and the traceroute was from my home to the TMN server site at Houston. I ran the test just a few minutes ago, 5:15 p.m. and was getting 1.2 Mbps, terrible. I then tried Western USA and got 16 Mbps and Eastern USA gave me 27 Mbps. So it most diffinately seems something is wrong going to the Central USA location which is the closest one to me causing the routing congestion. -
I have Suddenlink service. During peak usage hours, such as evenings and weekends, TestMy.net shows I’m only getting around 2 Mbps download speed. However, during non-peak hours, I get from 30-40 Mbps with TestMy.net. Here’s the problem. Using Suddenlink’s speed test, it says I’m getting around 30 Mbps during the hours that TestMy.net says it very slow (2 Mbps or less). The Suddenlink test I’ve traced to only testing basically within their own backbone so I don’t believe it’s results either as its not testing the throughput of its routers. I have also run other tests during the peak hours, from many of the university sites, such as http://speedtest.umflint.edu (java testers) and other like it that indicate my speed is around 25 Mbps. The fact is only TestMy.net show such a very low speed during these peak hours, which leads me to believe there is also congestion on your end. Since Suddenlink’s speed test shows it is fine, they will take no action and perhaps none is called for. However, any downloads I make are noticeably slower during peak periods. I’m still running Window XP, and it has been tuned for faster speeds as during off peak I get around 30-40 Mbps. So what gives, is it Suddenlink or other factors causing the peak period slowdowns. I have full Suddenlink service, TV cable, phone, and internet. Internet speeds have been okay during peak hours until around a month ago, when I noticed some slowdown and TestMy.net giving terrible results. By the way, I live south of Abilene and traced the TestMy.net test packets to Houston, not a very far distance, but outside my Suddenlink backbone.
