  1. WHEW, I did it. I pulled the battery, put it back in, and it worked. Don't ask me why. I'm never touching that overclocking function again . It works, I'm happy. Thanks for you help guys. If a moderator sees this, they can close the thread. There's no moral to take of it other than that computers have no logic whatsoever To Tommie: I actually have breakers at home, but I didn't want to use that term not to confuse them with the breakers inside the computer case. But I do agree: Breaker > Fuse. I didn't know there existed fuse-shaped breakers tho, thx for the info.
  2. nop, i'm completely new to fidgeting with motherboards. There are quite a few jumpers, which one should I try? Should I just take out the lithium battery and replace it? Btw, something really strange happenned. I was fidgeting with it all, I turned my computer on and the fuse for the room went off. Most other appliances in the room were not turned on, and my psu only takes 450 watts. Since I didn't understand right away that the fuse had blown, I went in another room and powered it up and... IT WORKED. I was thrilled, so I started wondering what was going on in the other room, and I figured the fuse had blown, i replaced it, then moved back my comp to its original spot and... it wouldn't boot! Ive tried recreating the exact same circumstances than the time it worked, but Ive been trying for hours and am getting discouraged. Any ideas or is it just a manifestation of chaos theory applied to computers? Also, could anyone drop me a word of what there is to know about master and slave IDE (idk what the terms mean) because I remark that my bios can see my hard drive as a master, but there is no slave, and when its about to boot, it says that IDEs 0,1,2 and 3 are not recognised while my bios sees my HD as ide 4. I also tried booting from a CD, and the bios crashed when its time to boot with a CD or with the HD.
  3. I tried booting on a CD but there is no difference. Tried disabling fastboot, but no difference again. Any ideas? Thx.
  4. Well, at least they did get the spelling right for the most common word
  5. Hello. I'm having some trouble booting my OS (Vista build 6000). It worked fine until I tried to overclock with an automatic function in the bios. My motherboard is the ASUS P5LD2 and the option I tried was overclocking with AI Overclocking, with a max of 3% overclock. The processor is core 2 duo 2.13 ghz. I tried reverting the bios to default but it won't help. When I power on, the bios boot screen appears, the screen goes black and scans for IDE devices (appears to find none) and then goes back to a distorted boot screen, and freezes. I can access the bios setup utility, but I'm not sure what to look for. Any ideas for solving my problem? Thanks in advance.
  6. did you get a torrent for it? or is it (gasp!) legal? cause I would like to upgrade mine Actually, I will probably buy the home premium when it is released, but I just want to see the benefits of Ultimate.
  7. xplay looks interesting, i'l give it a try when i'm back home. php, what build are you using? I'm using build 6000, buisness edition, with the latest edition of Itunes. When I connect the Ipod, windows recognizes it but Itunes only does sometimes. When Itunes recognizes it, it shows an error during the sync. I tried the troubleshooting a bit but it didn't help. Any ideas?
  8. Winamp worked well for me. Also, fyi, I got a new cpu and installed vista rtm on it, only to see that the Ipod I bought my sister wasent compatible with it. Itunes installs but is unstable and the syncing is really awefull. Overall, if youre looking forward to installing vista, start looking for an alternative for Itunes.
  9. Alright, I have a lot to reply, but I agree that we move it to another thread that does not discuss directly patriotism but the US foreign policy in general. Can one of you guys create such a thread. I'm not a regular forum poster and I'm too lazy to find out how to create one. Then plz post the link in this thread. Oh and can we keep the level of flame the way it is tdawnaz? I doubt that I can express my ideas whistle flaming less than I am actually Thanks.
  10. Umm, sorry, I disagree. Could you back that up with arguments, not examples? I cannot prove that world peace is possible (although I have examples that make me think it could be) but I feel it, and I will continue to do so until proven otherwise. I must admit that your post made me rethink my anti-war position. When the invasions of Afghanistan and Irak started, I was opposed to them because I believed, like a French politician whose name I forget, that "war is failure" to go with diplomatic ways. Now, in retrospective, Irak is probably better off without Saddam, and Afghanistan without the talibans. What bugs me is that the US "mysteriously" attacked countries which had good amounts of oil and that the reconstruction of these countries again "mysteriously" got attributed to friends of the government (Lockheed-martin, etc.). So I'm not so sure about the "without prejudice". Just remember that the US entered WWII only after they got attacked at Pearl Harbour. It gave a reason for which the american public would agree to send their boys. I can't recall any war that the US has waged only for the purpose of international peace, a war in which its interests were not involved. Now I agree that the US, as well as all the other countries included in the allies posted by tommie, did the right thing when they attacked the Nazi regime. I might even admit that they did the right thing by attacking Irak, but for the wrong reasons. Does anyone even still believe that Irak ever had WMDs? Most likely the government needed a pretext to attack, and homeland security proved to be quite efficient, until it was discovered there were no WMDs. The reason that you are being cast as villains are your motives imo. The use of the words "axis of evil", for example, vaguely reminds me of totalitarian regimes. The US should realize that they are not some kind of righteous hand of god, but a country among others which often have different values. I agree that regimes who perpetrate human rights violations daily should be stopped, but then again I think of the US who tortures prisoners in Guantanamo Bay, and I find it a bit ironic that the US wants to "free the people of Irak" but in parallel tortures some of them. But that, really, is just a thought of mine.
  11. Idk about RC1, but from what I understood, RC2 scans your hardware on installation and then decides how much of it he's going to put on the ram and how much on the HD. So even if you have 512 ram, you should still have half of it or so free for you programs, but the overall performance obviously won't be as high as if you had 1 gig. Also, I haven't checked if ReadyBoost (the possibility of using flash cards as ram) is activated in RC2, but that could help.
  12. alright tdawnaz, I'l try to keep the passion down, but discussing with people that don't agree with me is a treat that seldom happens because I usually hang out with people that think like me, which is quite normal. Usually, someone is interesting/intelligent when they think like you I dont like flaming (or being flamed) so if I didn't enjoy it, you wouldn't see me posting. I don't need to have the last word. tommie, you might have heard of the question that asks: "Would you save 100 people you have never met or one person you love?" In that case, from what I understand, you would include people of your country in "people you love", whistle I wouldn't, simply because I'm not very patriotic. On the other side, I think that might make me have a higher esteem for every other human being on earth, putting them on an equal scale as the people of my country. So I could not give a definitive answer to you question about how far I would go to help someone, it really depends on whom, and I would assume that the same goes for you.
  13. "The right to bear arms was basically a safety net for the citizens in case the gov't needed to be otherthrown." Why would you need a government-imposed right to overthrow such a government? I mean, if you want to revolt against a government, you do no need to go by its rules. Its not like guns had any diplomatic use or anything. There is no rule against marching on the whitehouse because, well, such a rule would be useless in a situation. Eeh, I'm having a hard time explaining myself. Oh well, it isn't really important.
  14. Oops, tommie, my bad, I thought this was the first page, not the 14th (it could have been the first, but I felt like I was missing something). And the fact that Canada barely has an army almost makes me proud, if such a thing is possible. I do not, indeed, share your values. But as mudmanc4 pointed out, a little research on the term "patriotism" was necessary, and I found the wikipedia article to be quite complete. There I learned that indeed my view of patriotism was often mislead. I did not think of patriotism as "pride in its achievements and culture, the desire to preserve its character and the basis of the culture, and identification with other members of the nation" but rather as its nationalist counterpart, "my country right or wrong". A phrase that really caught my attention was "a patriot can be critical of his or her country for failing to live up to its ideals", which renders false my statement that patriotism is always alienation. As for the term "organization", wikipedia defines it as "a formal group of people with one or more shared goals". thus I was partially wrong in my use of that term. The USA only constitute an organization when its citizen and supporters unite in a common goal (eg: going to war, protecting their interests, resolving a problem). Thus a country is not always an organization. Mudmanc4, thank you for making me learn the meaning of the word "epiphany", but could you otherwise clarify your post above? I'm not too sure which part of it is your opinion and which part are quotes, especially in the part with Israel under God. If you are too lazy to type it, here is the wikipedia link to patriotism: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patriotism Its a pretty interesting link, I suggest you read it if you plan on posting in this thread.
  15. Maybe just don't be ashamed. Farting is natural, lighting a match in a plane is dumb.
  16. Sorry to break the republican fun, but I must say I disagree. If you have read a few of my posts, you will notice that I disagree with many things, so you might just want to skip my post. Then again, you might want to know what I have to say. Well, what I have to say this time is mainly opinion. IMHO, patriotism is the alienation of self to the cause of an exterior organization. Patriotism is a way to stop making decisions, and agreeing blindly to whatever the homeland says. And in many respects I disagree. Not only with US patriotism, but with patriotism as a whole for the reasons I mentioned above. So although one might think one must show patriotism when its country is at war, I disagree. It is possible to agree with a decision that goes in the ways of a nation without doing it for patriotic reasons. If you want to be good to your country, you have plenty of other ways to do so.
  17. Imo, the movie isn't bad, althought I doubt that such a brutal change (sorry tommy, i'l try not to put too many spoilers in) would happen. I'm no more a meteorologist than I am an astrophysicist, but it seems quite radical. On the other side, when you think of it, a hurricane starts by being just a little mass of air that's just a few degrees different from the air around it. And all these small circumstances end up making up, well, Katrina. So anyways, tommie, your not on the track, but do rent the movie, if not for the story, for the special effects, which are quite cool.
  18. well, yes, but there's no money gain involved here, mainly money loss. There are no companies saying: buy or product, it saves the environment! So it is indeed quite satisfying to say that every problem is created by the media to make us buy, and I would agree with you on a different topic, but this time, there is no money to make on it. Although the predictions might be wrong, there isn't any money to make on that. Just to make things clear, I'm not an astrophysicist, I don't know everything about the subject. What I know is that an ice age is a natural cycle for the earth, a cycle that happens even without human activity. What we are doing right now is accelerating the cycle. I can't tell you when the next ice age will come, probably not in our lifetime or our children's, but when it comes, if there's a human being left on this earth, he will wish he could find a patch of grass somewhere under that half mile of ice. As for life within the universe, I wouldn't call myself closed minded (but who would call oneself close minded?) Its not that I do not want other lifeforms to exist, its just that I wouldn't count on it. I find it foolish to base the survival plan of our specie, if such a plan exists, on the assumption that "there's gotta be someone else". I guess its a problem similar to the one of the existence of God. There seems to be no way to irrefutably know if God exists, so from an agnostic point of view, I say: "Ok, well, I don't know if He exists, but I won't jump off a bridge to check if he saves me." I just realize now that this example may irritate some people, and for that I am sorry. So if you firmly believe within your heart that there are living species on other planets that will save us from our own destruction, you have faith, and no argument that I might say can deter faith. Even if I were to produce irrefutable proof that there are no other life forms than those on this planet, thought I doubt that such a proof would exist even if my premise were true, someone with faith would not understand me. Thus I think that us arguing is pointless, for we stand in different truth referentials. Okay, I might have gone a bit over my head here, please do not reply by burning down my house, but by constructive arguing if you think that such is possible.
  19. Mudmanc4, I would agree with certain of your points, including the one where you go insane, but I must say that I don't understand what questions concerning the future of earth your youtube video should bring us. Maybe its the fact that I'm studying astrophysics, but that doesn't stop me from being a treehugger. And btw, I havent made the calculations, but I doubt that the number of possible planets that we see is greater than the multiplication by two (random number) of every cosmological/physical constant (22, says Brian Greene in The Elegant Universe) divided by the margin in which life such as we know it on our planet is possible. Thus, life as we know it probably would not be possible on another planet within the actually visible universe. That being said the video was pretty cool in its own respect.
  20. Hi, I was wondering if there was a way to connect my printer to my router if my printer has no ethernet port. What i want is to be able to print from two different computers without having to buy two printers. My router is the Linksys wrt54g and I have a hp pcs printer with usb connection only. Thx
  21. I'm from canada and I use sympatico. Now you know. Have a nice day.
  22. Man, you have almost twice my dl with the same ISP... lucky you, where do you live?
  23. Ok, here would be my updated order CPU Intel Core 2 Duo Conroe E6400 2.13GHz FSB 1066, 2MB CPU Memory 2048MB DDR II 667 Memory 240 Pin (Major Brand) (1024 x 2) (special) Mother Board ASUS P5LD2 R2.0 Mother Board Hard Drive 1 Seagate 250GB 7200RPM 16MB Cache Serial ATA Hard Drive 2 Seagate 250GB 7200RPM 16MB Cache Serial ATA Optical Drive 1 LG 16X DVD RW +- Dual Layer Video ASUS EN7300 GS GeForce PCI E, 256MB Turbo Cache DDR, DVI Audio Onboard Audio Network Card Onboard Network Card Case Lian-Li PC61 ATX Silver Aluminum Mid. 24. This is actually a Christmas present for my family, so there won't be too much gaming going on, but the computer will be used virtually 24/7. I'l be moving out soon so I want them to have a reliable system so I'm not always called in. Also, before I leave, I'l be glad to use it to game and photoshop a bit, but nothing too high end. Overall, photoshop and a bit of autocad are gonna be the most demanding apps. Also, there will be quite a bit of scanning and printing pictures (which our current comp handles horribly, with 80% memory used all the time.) For the hardware changes, I think I'l go for your suggestions for the drives and the power supply. For the memory speed tho, I don't think I can do anything there. I was also wondering If you guys thought it was possible to turn one of the hard drives off when not in use to save power and reduce noise. Oh and btw, I havent checked yet but i think your recommendations wont put the price more than 50$ higher. I didn't really have a budget (I have way too much money) but I wanted core 2 duo because of the long term usage and because the computer is virtually always in use or on standby, so i want to save the power and the noise. I also tried to buy on e-bay but all the cases are way to funky to be in my home. Oh and thx for the feedback.
  25. Hi, I'm gonna order a new "custom" computer, and I'm pretty much a noob when it comes to parts other than graphic cards and cpus. I'm wondering if you could give me some feedback on what is good and what you suggest I change for the price. Here are the specs: CPU Intel Core 2 Duo Conroe E6400 2.13GHz FSB 1066, 2MB CPU Memory 2048MB DDR II 667 Memory 240 Pin (Major Brand) (1024 x 2) (special) Mother Board ASUS P5LD2 R2.0 Mother Board Hard Drive 1 Western Digital 250GB 7200RPM 16MB Cache Serial ATA II Hard Drive 2 Western Digital 250GB 7200RPM 16MB Cache Serial ATA II Optical Drive 1 LG 16X DVD RW +- Dual Layer Video ASUS EN7300 GS GeForce PCI E, 256MB Turbo Cache DDR, DVI Audio Onboard Audio Network Card Onboard Network Card Case Lian-Li PC61 ATX Silver Aluminum Mid. Tower (black) Power Supply 430 Watt Thermaltake Power Supply With Dual Fan W0070 Warranty 1 Years Parts & 3 Years Labor Warranty (Canadian Dollars) Priced At: $1,071 + approx 140$ shipping and tax that makes about total $1000 US I can change most parts, but the present configuration is a set, so its cheaper that way. Any suggestions? Thx
