First, everybody has different experiences with their ISPs. Some good, some bad. Keep this in mind when reading my assessment below, and don't jump to any conclusions. None of the ISPs here (TW, AT&T, Adelphia, etc) want to take a step and start offering at least 10/1 to everybody. It has been rumored Comcast will be rolling out 16/1 soon in some places with FiOS competition...and nation-wide starting in the Summer. Adelphia has upgraded 5 locations in So. Cal. to the "extreme" 16/2 tier. 4 of those locations are within 30 mins of me, and naturally I'd think my area would be upgraded soon since our speeds were upped in late March/early April '05 (I think). However, there is no competition from the likes of Verizon here. AT&T is my phone provider, but they can't even get DSL to half of the people in my city let a lone fiber or their lightspeed project. So, looks as if I'll be on 6mbit/896kbit for a long time to come...and might be downgraded to 6/768 if/when TW takes over. Not that 6/768 is bad, but it can get fairly busy with 3 moderate net users in one house on the pipe at the same time streaming movie trailers, music, uploading large pictures, etc. I dunno how Adelphia's TV is, but EVERYBODY (friends, family, and neighbors) I know with Adelphia internet ops for Dish TV so that must say something (cheaper price can't be the only reason for going to a 2nd provider) about the content and quality provided. I want this merger to pull through so that hopefully TW will take Adelphia's recent attempt to better their service further and perhaps offer an even better product. Of course this (probably) won't happen since there isn't any competition, like the kind between Verizon and OOL on the East Coast, and many people here just do really give a sh*t what kind of product is being offered since they don't know of any better. It's great VZ and OOL can pump out better services at lower prices (versus what most of the rest of the country can get), but I just wish (larger) ISPs here on the West Coast - and throughout the rest of the country - would do the same. That's it. Didn't mean to go this far...

I know here in So. Cal. they've upgraded a couple beach communities because of competition with FiOS.

I'd bet Verizon is the first to offer their services. If you look at the locations Adelphia has rolled out their Extreme service, FIOS had already been available there for a good while. IMO Adelphia is like any other cable company; they won't upgrade unless there's serious competition first. Just like Comcast, Adelphia services quite a lost of areas where they are the only HSI provider. So, in conclusion, if I was you I'd be waiting for FIOS before I'd be expecting Extreme.

I get slower at my school (CSUSB - around 1mbit I think), but faster where I work (UCR - 5-6mbit).

Japan [obviously] has amazing bandwidth. I remember reading in some Networking magazine earlier in '05 that Hong Kong alone has a backbone with throughput in the neighborhood of 64,000Gbit, although numbers might be a bit off And a lot of it (if not most) is fiber!

Well when we have ppl like those at Qwest (and most other major ISPs) who don't believe Americans need something like 100/100, we won't see those speeds anytime soon. Look at Sweden; they also offer at least 10/10 to a lot of their population. It's just sad, though...100/50 in Japan for about the price of AOL in the U.S. Really puts thing in perspective.

Maybe packet loss or something? I dunno how Comcast's Tech Support is, but give them a call and tell them exactly what's happening. Don't hang up until they understand what's going on at your end.

my point point is: from what i've seen CC doesnt upgrade ONLY particular areas, instead they do most at the same time -- even tho they dont offer as fast as fios/ool. IMO this is better because more of the market sees the upgrade at one time, hence more people getting the same advantage instead of a few lucky people in 2, 3....7 select cities. Verizon is building a network so I can understand their slower roll-out but for Cable Cos, who might already have the required networks for faster speeds...they should offer faster service instead of waiting for somebody else to take the first step. At the very least Cable Cos should attempt upgrades to justify their higher prices instead of BS'ing about how much content/services they offer.

One thing about Comcast is when they upgrade, they attempt to upgrade all their customers at the same time. Not this one city here and there crap like Adelphia, Cox, etc.

adelphia has upgraded 7 areas in the past 6 months.

you have to remember most of Comcast's (and Adelphia's) subscribers dont live in areas where FIOS is available (or fast cable like OOL) , or any other 10mbit+ speeds for that matter. I'm sure in CC's eyes, they think they're providing us with A+ services for the money.

They really need to offer something faster than 10/1. They signed a deal with Cisco for a new backbone not too long ago. Is this "upgrade" what CC is planning to use that new backbone for?...Sc*w the download upgrade, give more upload! Also, still waiting to hear what's gonna happen to us Adelphia subscribers.

I have the following in the PC I'm on: 1 WD 45gig, 1 WD 60gig (came with computer), 2 WD 200gig, and 1 WD 250gig. I'm thinking about replacing the 45 and 60 with another 250.

Adelphia has pretty decent speeds. I just hope your net doesn't go out for 3 weeks due to a hardware problem on Adelpia's side, like mine did.

Indestructable: I work at UCR. tbaker397: I know what it'd take on Verizon's part, but I'm not even going to get my hopes up since they don't service my area. I only made that statement for San Bernardino because I know Verizon services parts of it.

It seems all ISPs who can't keep up with FIOS is just upping download bandwidth in hopes that people will still happy.

I'll post a speed test from my work next week. Expect about 5mbit/5mbit.
