  1. greetings! if you're a windows user and want to experience linux, go with mandriva, the closest linux build to windows. smallest footprint for me is puppy linux retro, which you will not use since you have an old hard disk and a fast computer with lots of ram. try most, if not all distros before you decide. better if you can install virtualbox http://www.virtualbox.org/ inside windows so you can try distros without even bothering your windows environment. good luck...
  2. greetings! aside from KDE and GNOME, don't forget XFCE at http://www.xfce.org/, the lightest of them all. this can resurrect very old PCs, if you have one. probably the easiest to install and co-exist with windows is ubuntu, the one that can be installed inside the windows environment, through wubi. peace!
  3. greetings! have you tried this one? http://www.confickerworkinggroup.org/infection_test/cfeyechart.html or maybe you just have to do a port scan. http://nmap.org/download.html i'll be back later...
  4. greetings! maybe your mom's computer is in a spot that is difficult for a wireless signal to penetrate. have you tried relocating her pc? move it somewhere near a window perhaps. just a wild guess..

  21. greetings! ==> If only linux was compatible with most of the stuff I use then I would make it the main OS of my other system. Although windows 7 is proving to be fairly nice. An upgrade from Vista at least. Linux will be compatible for most windows applications if you will install "wine" http://www.winehq.org/ you can install windows apps using this. if you also want to play windows games on linux, together with windows apps, you can also install "Play On Linux" http://www.playonlinux.com/ enjoy!
  22. greetings! IMO, cable internet is like water flowing out of a water tank, going to the gripos. if there are many gripos open at the same time, the less water gripo users get. broadband is different. you have pipes Directly connecting you to the water tank. many gripos open, same amount of water flows in each and every gripo users. my opinion...
  23. greetings! gnome for desktop users, kde for advanced users or programmers, xfce for old computers.
  24. greetings! have you reviewed freecom ==> http://www.freecom.com/ or hitachi ==> http://www.hitachigst.com/ hard drives? both are external tough drives that provides protection. hope this helps.
  25. greetings! i think it is better to use a separate Network Interface Card rather than the onboard one. this is, IMO, similar to what a separate video card and onboard video does. a separate card has its own memory, rather than the sharing that goes with the onboard video card. besides, you have two internet connections; a separate NIC and onboard connection. if NIC fails, you can use onboard, right? hope this will help.
