  1. Well I'm back posting after a move from SoDak (and wonderful 8 meg internet) to Wisconsin (and WISP being my only choice) so I was wondering what you guys are seeing from your wisps as far as latency? my download (although looking pathetic) is above advertised: :::.. Download Stats ..::: Connection is:: 345 Kbps about 0.3 Mbps (tested with 1013 kB) Download Speed is:: 42 kB/s Tested From:: https://testmy.net/ (server1) Test Time:: Thu Aug 04 2005 10:05:09 GMT-0500 (Central Standard Time) Bottom Line:: 6X faster than 56K 1MB download in 24.38 sec Diagnosis: Awesome! 20% + : 44.96 % faster than the average for host (227.212) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-UYEFB5WHL I'm paying for a 256K circut. My upload however is rather pathetic: :::.. Upload Stats ..::: Connection is:: 6 Kbps about 0 Mbps (tested with 97 kB) Upload Speed is:: 1 kB/s Tested From:: https://testmy.net/ (server1) Test Time:: Thu Aug 04 2005 10:08:13 GMT-0500 (Central Standard Time) Bottom Line:: 0X faster than 56K 1MB upload in 1024 sec Diagnosis: May need help : running at only 8.33 % of your hosts average (227.212) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-QOEVLFK7Y I"m not sure why, although I'm getting a better antennae either later today or tomorrow so we'll see if that improves. What distresses me is my ping times! Pinging testmy.net [67.18.179.85] with 32 bytes of data: Request timed out. Chris
  2. Welcome to the Forum, your tale is not unlike many. WHen you call request a teir two representative.
  3. the cord you've currently got running from your DSL modem to your computer is probably a USB cord... You can achieve more stable speeds via ethernet. Ethernet jacks indeed look like oversized phone cords, depending on the age and maker of your PC you could already have a NIC (Network Interface Card) in it, if not $20 will get'cha one. Just plug it into a spare PCI slot and load up the drivers, plug in a network cable ($6-10 if your modem box doesn't have one in it.. ) and then you'll be seeing closer to advertised speeds. as well as being more ready for tweaks. If the only place you're seeing slow speeds is P2p clients its' not going to help to use eithernet.. that's just chances of getting a good peer to upload from... I doubt they're pakcetshaping since it sounds like talk talk doesn't even have anything to do with the POP's (reseller only) but it could be depending on the company that controls them. Remember that P2P relies on having someone to send you the file, and as i'm sure you know if you do a uploadtest your upload isn't usually as good as your download.. (unless you have a SDSL or other synch line) so be thankful you have an always on connection and can still steal music and wait for it.. or use a serivce like napster or emusic or whatever and pay for it and enjoy super fast downloads. </Rant> chris

  11. it'll be a bit nicer for hosting certain games.. probably not PS2 games.. but to answer your actual question- you should have no problems whatsoever unless FIOS is blocking more ports than i originally was told. side note: GO FOR IT DUDE!!! Chris

  14. She's my baby.. more pics here: www.nerdish.net/vettepics/vettepics.htm
  15. Tech Support? I don't forsee the need to call them.. they're very reliable.. Plus since there are only two consumer account levels they've never forseen the need to put the level information on your account- they go by how much you pay. The only time it would get reset back to regular is if they do a city wide reset, in which case my friend will call and ask for my MAC again.. it's not his fault after all, those routers just do crazy things sometimes! Y'all just don't like the hick- i get it now Chris
  16. Yea when i said Uncapped I was implying that i had not reached it yet.. technically it's packetshaped to 10mb per node.. i'm one of exactly 2 people on my node right now.. (enjoying living in a part of town where no one has the cash for cable internet lol!) Their business packages are dedicated circuts. although I think i'll ahve a friend bump my mac address into the highest cable modem upload bracket... *"Excellent..."* Chris
  17. try being in South Dakota... pretty sure we use fibre for all the phones ont he farm and in town now but as for internet, that will never happen. *sigh* we still dont' ahve dsl available past 1.5 mbps... how pathetic is that?! Chris

Lovin it! Chris
  19. Yeah, but the upload is only 256.. .for $45 /month i can have 512 up.. there's no other service tears for downlaod though - it's all uncapped and whatever you can get.. Chris

  22. Yea except they charge $70/year for FRONTPAGE EXTENSIONS. GHEY! They're practically a throw in item on every other server. Anyway, if you're into into frontpage editing, it looks like a good deal. I would go for the resellers package.. ($300/year) and sell to your buddies... unlimited space and bandwidth, you could make a kiling if you know a few guys that host websitesand are sick of limited stuff... Chris
  23. Technically it's not "Capped" on the download.. but of course I'm using USB at the moment (stupid network cord is @ the other house..) anyway.. for usb it feels good: :::.. 25. $399/month for 200kb up? For $10,000 i can have fibre ran out here and we can have 5mbps dsl @ 54.9/month.. three years and it's paid for itself plus we have no latencey.. it's excellent idea for people who really can't no matter what get broadband, but i don't see it replacing direcway yet.. they don't have a field of installers even.. they need to make it so you can use direcway dish and hook they're reciever up as an added bonus for switching... something to make people pay $20/month more for 20kb more up. chris
