In the past few years I have owned nothing but laptops and always leave them plugged in. I have had no problems with it before. Rich's first post explains it pretty well. All the laptops I have owned quit sending power to the battery after it is done charging. You can check to see if your shuts off after fully charged by going to control panel then power options, it will tell you if it is actively sending power to the battery or not.

My laptop is always plugged in. When I use the battery, it doesn't have as much charge as it used to have and it takes a really long time to charge. I don't know if it's because I always have it plugged in or not, it may just be a bad battery supplied by Dell.
