Hi and Help

Recommended Posts

First off Hi, this is a great site that I was turned on to by a tech at my ISP (although he may be regretting it now).

I was hoping someone could help me understand how everytime I call my ISP about slow connection speeds they tell me everything is fine and there is no problem.  I have Adelphia/TWC premium service.  Which as far as I know is the best residential service they offer.  I just ran a download test and it claims I'm running at 26% of average?  I just called tech support and they said everything was great?  How can this be?  If I run this test at night I'm lucky to get 400 Kbps and average around 200 Kbps.  My upload speeds jump from 100 to 880 Kbps.  I am 99.9% sure I do not have a spyware/malware or virus problem (I just spent the past week on another forum getting help to determine this since my ISP claimed that had to be my issue.)  I don't do any filing sharing and I don't use email on this computer.  I should also add this problem started around the middle of August, everything seemed fine fine until then.  Am I right in thinking that for 'premium service' these results are not good?

Hi,

My service is considered the premiere service, with speeds 100x faster than dial up, a 6meg service.  Since I started having these issues I clean my temp folder at least daily, although I've never noticed it to make a difference.

And yes, generally I'll see my best times early in the morning.  I just ran a test just now and and got one of my best times:

Last night when I ran this I was getting a download connection of 156 Kbps, so I called my ISP and talked to someone who was very helpful.  He said packets were randomly being lost, about 20-25% of the time.  But they also said it was so random it would be very hard to track down.  At least this time they acknowledged there was a problem and are sending a tech out to check the lines.  Not knowing a lot about this yet I'm wondering if it could be something as simple as a loose connection at the pole and everytime the wind blows I'm losing packets.

:hello: :hello: Hi and welcome to the forum. Glad you like the site. If you are advertised 6 down and you are getting what you posted you are getting boned. You need to tell them to fix it. You can try tweeking here http://www.testmy.net/forum/t-1013. You have got to tell your isp you are not getting what you are paying for. Keep us up to date on whats happening. You may have some bad wiring in your house, you could try a booster I suppose. They may have to replace some wiring in your wall. Good luck.

yeah i agree it's probably the wiring. Either that or someone has an uncapped modem in your neighborhood.

I hope your all right this this is a wiring issue.  The co-axle cable and splitter I'm currently using are the same ones I was using back in the 80's.

There's a lot to look at in the link from Shug7272, I'll dig into that as soon as my 'normal' connection speeds are acceptable.

Here's my midday speed:

Download Connection is:: 650 Kbps about 0.65 Mbps (tested with 1496 kB)

Do you have digital cable?  If you do, then the spitter is definitely your problem, but even if you have regular cable, a bad spitter could cause the problem...Your pc should be the first thing off the spitter.

Meaning when the cable comes into the house, when it first splits, one line should go to the computer(modem). If you split the signal, then split it again before you get to the pc, you could run into problems.

But have them visually inspect the wires at the pole by your house as well...When they checked ours, our neighbors cable wire fell to the ground(the insulation had been broke for some time), but somehow the wires kept touching..

Or it could be a congestion problem with the node you are on...If that is the case, there is really nothing you can do, other than complain, and get neighbors to complain as well...

If you can, ask your neighbors who have cable if their speeds are slow as well...If they are also slow, it's most likey a saturated node.

I had my appointment yesterday and they couldn't find a thing wrong with my wiring.  They still went ahead and switched all the cable in my house, the splitter and I got a new modem.  They checked the singnal strength and said it was actually a little high so the used a splitter that reduced it a little.  After all that we ran some new test here and I came in around 200-250Kbps.  They now think it's something on the pole so they set up another appointment to have that checked.

The weird thing is Sunday morning I ran the test at 7:30 am, before the appoinment,  and got my best score ever of over 4000 Kbps. It was an odd coincidence that this happened on the same day as my appointment.  I ran it early again today and got another great response (great for me at least):
