A much better disk benchmarking method:

root@sabayonx86-64: 08:36 PM :~# dd bs=2M count=10000 if=/dev/sdc of=/dev/null

10000+0 records in

10000+0 records out

20971520000 bytes (21 GB) copied, 26.8962 s, 780 MB/s

and hdparm....

root@sabayonx86-64: 08:37 PM :~# hdparm -t /dev/sdc

/dev/sdc:

 Timing buffered disk reads:  2208 MB in  3.00 seconds = 735.67 MB/sec

*Question though. Does the test take into account the operating system? Running with Ubuntu I have much faster results than when I run it under WinXP. :undecided:

Could it be possible, that there are many more services running in XP, that could be accessing the net ? And it just isnt optimized?

linux has always run cleaner, faster, and more efficient on the net for me.

Yep, that is true mudmanc4. I have even tested from a fresh clean install and windows was still lower than the speeds I am getting with ubuntu/linux. And the weird thing.....I download something in winxp and the d/l speeds are usually 40-50 kbps, where in ubuntu, last night I was downloading ubuntu updates, and it was downloading at 100-105 kbps. Awesome!!!
