is my motherboard or my prossessor fried? help would be VERY apritiated

Recommended Posts

hi folks

i am not a retard when it comes to computers. i have built several systems but i would like some opinions. i was stupid enough to put a 800w power supply into my high powered machine (6gig processor,4gig ocz platinum ram,sli 9800 gx2 graphics cards,) and soon enough there was a loud explosion and my power supply blew up so i went i bought a new power supply a 1000w this time  installed it turned the computer on all the fans and everything was working fine hardware wise. but nothing AT ALL appeared on my monitor i have tryed different cables and monitors but still nothing. i have come to the conclusion that my power supply shorted out something but what. i don't want to go racing off to buy something like a motherboared when it is not broken

PS. i know it is not the graphics cards because i also tested my on-board graphics

any help would be great

You say it's not the graphics cards,  but the onboard chip as you know have nothing to do with the 9800.  Is it possible that the four pin connector for the graphics card, got inadvertently switched with the motherboard power ?

Don't use these numbers as Bible truth but its a guideline

9800gx2 Blowing Power Supplies- Advice needed

Hi, I purchased a new PC at the beginning of this year:

CPU: Intel Core 2 duo e6850

GPU: Asus 9800gx2

Motherboard: Asus P5K

RAM: 4GB ddr2

I'm having an on going issue with blowing power supplies. I have had 3 blow this year (two 600w psu's and 1 850w psu). I've just purchased a new psu which is a SmartPower (SP) 925w psu.

The Specifications are:

DC Output:

+3.3V- 55A

+5V- 55A

+12V- 19A

+12V- 19A

-12V- 0.8A

+5VSB- 3A

the 9800gx2 alone can draw over 30A of that 60A maximum on a o/c system, and demand mid 20's at full load on normal settings. So less than 50A available on the 12V will be starving the system.

Have you thought about SLI certified power supplies or you already have?  60 Amps is a massive load.

4 X 20 Amps

OK so it ended up being my mobo

so i got a new one (striker 2)everything works good now got a good claim on the power supply manufactures thx alot for all your help

Keep us updated so we know how things went down , would you  ?

Oh Geeze.. I better just say that my Core7 box is going to win this fight..  :2funny: :2funny: :2funny:

Yah them new core7 are nice. Cant wait to get my hands on one. I can really complain i only paid 270 bucks for my quad extreme from intel

Im running a 12GHz System  :evil6: Well if you add all four cores

LOL. You have no idea how many times a day I hear that. I hate when people think that you add up the GHZ of your cores to get the real GHZ #. I was in best buy once and a guy was telling some couple that "this computer has a dual core 3GHz processor, so its really 6Ghz"  :haha:

Shit if your running a 12Ghz system then I guess I beat you with my 25.6 GHz system.  :evil6:

S#!t if your running a 12GHz system then I guess I beat you with my 25.6 GHz system.  :evil6:

Hell most of the time only two cores are really working, unless im running a game, video editing, or some benchmarks :grin2:

Im guessing your running dual quads

Yep dual 3.2 GHz Xeon Harpertown's, I also have 24mb of cache between the 2 of them. And for most of the day all 8 cores are working.

What the hell you do to you needing that much processing power

Porn...  :haha:

jk... I use it for 3D modeling and rendering for our theaters. It is also the machine I use to make things to be cut on our CNC.

Its not fast enough tho, I really need something with 12 or 16 cores. I can only do 3 windows VM's rendering while doing 1 other thing at the same time in OS X.
