justinlay Posted November 22, 2008 CID Share Posted November 22, 2008 When was the last time you had your dish realigned? Back in the day when i was direcway i would know if i was fap'd. They didnt just slow my connection down, but made it to a grinding halt. I pretty much didnt have a connection for 3-4 hours It really sucked when I had to do windows updates
granpa Posted November 22, 2008 CID Share Posted November 22, 2008 Sparky, Some of us here had Hughes when it used 2 modems and there was many things to learn to make it run at top speed. The newer systems are no different. I used the 2-way when it came out and for 6 years was pretty much consistent at a 1.2meg average. I believe we all found running the least amount of programs and using tweaks along with a near perfectly aligned (sighted in) system got the maximum results. I have an old PC here that ran 24/7 as my server with Hughes software to run the 2 modems and it's still running and on Sprint pulls good download speeds. If you can tell us about your PC and you satellite stats we may be able to give you some solutions for better speeds.

What bird are you one Sparky? Unsure, I used to know but can't remember, damn old age.... When was the last time you had your dish realigned? I did it myself this past summer, I was unable to get a stronger signal strength higher then 70. One thing I did notice, when I was adjusting the dish every time I put my hands on the back of the dish the signal would go up by around +10, I was thinking about going up with some aluminum foil and contact adhesive spray fixing it to the rear of the dish, I still may try this when it warms up just to see if it will help any. Have any of you tried this yet?
tommie gorman Posted November 22, 2008 CID Share Posted November 22, 2008 If you are using the smart test that might be part of it For best results try this. http://www.testmy.net/dl-3072 It is the closest to the 2992 test they used to have, and it gave the best results for speed on Hughes. sparky Posted November 23, 2008 Author CID Share Posted November 23, 2008 I don't think I used the smart test, I went straight for the 1Mb file..... It was not the test that was inaccurate, my speed was down badly, pages had trouble loading, when they did it could take over 1 minute to load and so forth. sparky Posted November 23, 2008 Author CID Share Posted November 23, 2008 I am starting to see a pattern now, its a bottleneck issue, Hughes is overloading this bird I am on, what ever it is, I think it is Horizons1.... not sure anymore, anyone know how to tell? justinlay Posted November 23, 2008 CID Share Posted November 23, 2008 I dont know what it cost these days to get a realignment and get you commissioned on another bird. I know 4 years ago it cost me 75 to have them come out and get commissioned to another bird
sparky Posted November 23, 2008 Author CID Share Posted November 23, 2008 Your telling me I would have to pay them to move me to another bird just because they oversold the one I am on now? That is not going to happen, I would rather shut the service down again then pay hughesnet another dime then I am now.

dn0 Posted November 23, 2008 CID Share Posted November 23, 2008 Not too bad this morning. Sparky, have you looked into a wireless/cell carrier like Sprint / AT&T, etc? I believe TMN member granpa switched to Sprint EVDO as soon as they upgraded his area. I use Sprint EVDO for work and it is for the most part reliable, although I am mobile most of the time and definitely find dead spots. Just a thought. edit: here's a couple examples http://coverage.sprintpcs.com/IMPACT.jsp?PCode=vanity:coverage http://www.wireless.att.com/coverageviewer/ http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/CoverageLocatorController?requesttype=NEWREQUEST&coveragetype=broadband
tommie gorman Posted November 23, 2008 CID Share Posted November 23, 2008 I am likewise the same as to changing from Hughes to Sprint. Its been great. Any wireless beats Hughes. NO super high speed, but definately does the job. And no FAP. By the way, your not Fapped are you?

Hell tommie I bet you felt you were on high speed when you switch from hughes to sprint.
tommie gorman Posted November 23, 2008 CID Share Posted November 23, 2008 I actually got consistant speeds with hughes. Usually evening was around 1030/50. Yes its been great, and no weather bog downs.
