ninjageek Posted March 7, 2009 CID Share Posted March 7, 2009 I THINK?? I have a bad cable box. I have xp pro. System is clean from virus and spyware. Problem is it sure seems like I have to reset the box way to much to get my speeds back. Ya know. Shut down the computer unplug the box........wait a couple of min........plug back in the box........wait few more min then turn back on the computer. If I do that I get my speeds back. Seems like it does this when I shut down the computer itself. Unless someone else has a idea??
mudmanc4 Posted March 7, 2009 CID Share Posted March 7, 2009 When you say cable box, do you mean router ? I had that happen a while back, never did get to the bottom of it, it lasted on and off for a year. I finally went down and exchanged the modem, and all was well. Only other thing I can think of is, someone, or something is using your bandwidth . They , or it, loses connection obviously when you kill the power, then it starts up again. Maybe did a bit deeper into your system for nasties ? Some people find it helpful if they uninstall there current malware/spyware program, and try another one. I have thrown hijack this at it. Did my scans in safe mode. Used spybot, malwarebytes. Did the virus scan with avast. If I do a reset of the router my speeds go fine. Reboot the machine or over a bit of time I loose my speeds. I even did a memory leak test to make sure I am not getting a memory leak issue. I have dual hard drives and it acts the same on both sides. My next and final test will put linux back on it for a short time and see what it does then. If it still acts slow with linux it has got to be the router or am I missing something else??
mudmanc4 Posted March 7, 2009 CID Share Posted March 7, 2009 Do you use the auto test here at testmy.net ? Maybe , unless your just sick of your problem lol, do that for a day, and then as many times as you can, do a trace route here, log it all, and the times, set your router to log all connections ( it's allot in the router ) but find out what's causing it you know ? You'll be able to see if someone is knockin on your door lol, or from the inside out . Did you do as many scans as you can in safe mode ? edit fro my cruddy spelling tonight lol
ninjageek Posted March 7, 2009 Author CID Share Posted March 7, 2009 Of late been using pc pit stops speed tests. Not sure why but testmy.nets speed test has been wrong on my connection. I have been trying to use testmy smart test. It was only showing speeds of say 3.2 when pit stop was showing my connection was up to speed. When pit stop was telling me my connection was up to speed, the surfing to diffrent sites, video from diffrent sites all worked as they should. My net connection was humming right allong as it should. Then as it slowed pit stop tests showed my connection had slowed while testmy was showing the same speed. Yes I closed the browser ran CCleaner and even tried a reboot. This is not a flame or a slam or whatever at testmy speed test. Not sure why its been so off the last couple of days. Using the same sites and video ya know you just KNOW when your connection if fine or running slow. Pit Stop was confirming while testmy was telling my speeds had not changed. I just figured while running the test last couple of days maybe testmy was having some problems? Unsure.
ninjageek Posted March 8, 2009 Author CID Share Posted March 8, 2009 Update. Well I finally gave in and called the cable company. They ran a couple of tests and Seems there is a connection issue. mudmanc4 Posted March 8, 2009 CID Share Posted March 8, 2009 The second one underlined appears to be a router within the datacenter that prbably gets sallot of traffic, I don't think htis is the first time there was lag in there "bounce" config. I'm sure the site owner could explin better. Why do you take the first two from the result ? There's nothing personal in there.

mudmanc4 Posted March 8, 2009 CID Share Posted March 8, 2009 i've forgotten how do i do a ping and tracert in freakin vista...tell me again... H'bout clicking start> then type " run" in the search box, then you'll have to exicute the command, when the shell opens, type "tracert" then the IP, or dns name you want to trace, the same goes for ping. That would be the basics, there are flags that can be inserted for different resutls.
zalternate Posted March 8, 2009 CID Share Posted March 8, 2009 Why do you take the first two from the result ? There's nothing personal in there. If the pings/tracert is good in there, I usually just ignore them from a post. For the most part, the tracerts further down the chain are more important. But I have seen some peoples tracerts that show their own router or modem as the main slowdown in the tracert. And those are the simple ones to fix. Sometimes as simple as rebooting their router or modem at least once a month. Or as tough as getting out the 5 pound sledge hammer for the satellite people. My XP box was acting weird one day and I realized that I had not rebooted in a month. Standby at night is an insomniacs delight.
