jrtcjrjr Posted November 3, 2015 CID Share Posted November 3, 2015 After my ISP (WOW) upped my throughput I haven't been able to finish a testmy.net download test. Two small downloads complete in the blink of an eye but then on the third, larger download the test hangs. Any suggestions? I used to test frequently but stopped. After WOW bumped (doubled) the speed I thought I would come back to verify. WOW's speed test shows something near the expected result but I've been unable to verify using testmy.net. CA3LE Posted November 4, 2015 CID Share Posted November 4, 2015 What percentage does it show when it hangs? What's the test size?
az100sun Posted November 4, 2015 CID Share Posted November 4, 2015 Not trying to steal this thread but I'm seeing this issue as well. I'm on a MB Pro and I've tried Firefox, Chrome, and Safari. After several attempts, it did work once using the Express Test! 25.4 MB option under Download Test. On another attempt, it stalled at the 29% mark on the download. Even now, on dallas4 using a 16.4 MB Express Test, it's still stalling.
CA3LE Posted November 4, 2015 CID Share Posted November 4, 2015 I've tried 3 different machines, Safari, Chrome and Firefox. Everything is working as expected. The only time I see the test hang is when there's a connection issue. My laptop (rMBP) right now for instance. I keep getting these dips, it's the wifi or laptops fault... not the test. https://testmy.net/db/k7wGAiOMl On my wifi connected 5K iMac https://testmy.net/db/P305ID68t ... wired mid 2011 iMac https://testmy.net/db/jpW3EB0Ka Recent results look like everyone else is testing normally too. Maybe your connection is dropping out. Have you tried selecting a different test server or multithread recently?
jrtcjrjr Posted November 4, 2015 Author CID Share Posted November 4, 2015 Sorry it has taken so long to get back to this... In response to: What percentage does it show when it hangs? What's the test size? I honestly don't know the size. The first two passes (very small sizes) fly by so quick I cannot read then. The third hangs with a simple message about preparing... I will try again and see if I can get more information. The hang-up seems to be in the file preparation phase as opposed to the download phase. I didn't mention this earlier, I am having this problem using Chrome and OSX. Using Chrome and Windows 10 I do not have any problem. My Apple computer is connected via Ethernet but the Windows computer is wireless. Using my wireless router there has always been a significant degradation in speed compared to the wired connection. jrtcjrjr Posted November 4, 2015 Author CID Share Posted November 4, 2015 I just tried (and tried again). Using the Express Download (~25mb) I get a message, waiting for testmy.net. My Internet is working fine. While the testmy.net waits, I opened another tab and conducted a WOW speed test. After it finished the testmy.net page was still waiting. Any ideas of what I might be doing wrong here?
Sean Posted November 4, 2015 CID Share Posted November 4, 2015 (edited) I had a quick look at the page source during the test as I was curious to see how the test works and what it might be getting stuck at. I was actually quite surprised to see that it's just a lengthy set of comments with random characters, so what the browser receives is a very long webpage that mainly consists of invisible comments to bulk it up to the requested download size. Quite clever. So what I suspect is that some web filter is choking on the enormous web pages, which could be either some parental control (even if off) within the ISP, PC or even the virus checker scanning the page for anything suspicious and aborting the transfer after a certain amount of data is fetched. What I suggest is to try a https test. Most web filters (especially within the ISP) are unable to analyse secure connections and in turn will just let the data pass through just like a file download. You can ignore the security certificate warnings as they just mean the host is using a self-signed certificate. If the https test gets stuck on the larger block sizes, try disabling your virus checker temporarily or run a speed test on your mobile to see if the larger block sizes work. missmoondog Posted December 7, 2015 CID Share Posted December 7, 2015 fwiw, i've been having this issue for a very long time now just never bothered to post as there are to many other speed test sites on the net. between the test hanging and the results page being a page not found error, I've mostly given up on this sites test. this all happens in windows 7 & IE11 and windows 10 & Edge and Firefox in both operating systems. also happens very often in firefox on Linux. even the https link posted by sean gets me this: There is a problem with this website’s security certificate. The security certificate presented by this website was not issued by a trusted certificate authority. The security certificate presented by this website was issued for a different website's address. Security certificate problems may indicate an attempt to fool you or intercept any data you send to the server.

It's a self-signed certificate. It's not an attempt to fool you, your browser is just warning you in case it was. If you don't trust TestMy.net then you shouldn't be here. Fact is, the https test and the http test are exactly the same. The https test sends me no more information about you than the normal test, they both run the same except the https test runs over port 443 instead of 80. I'm not going to go out and pay for server certificates for all of my servers for a test I put online, originally for one person. If this were an ecommerce site and you were actually sending me secure information it would be another story. But we aren't talking about a security issue here. You've been here since 2005... you should trust what I'm doing by now. As for a page not found for test results. If this happens please let me know the server you're testing against and how often it happens. You should never see a 404 error. I think what you may actually be seeing is connection reset by peer. Please post a screenshot next time it happens and I'll make it work better for you. mudmanc4 and Sean
missmoondog Posted December 12, 2015 CID Share Posted December 12, 2015 it's not that i don't trust this site, just simply showing you what i got when clicking that link as there may be other people who click that link and leave instantly! i've only gotten the 404 error in IE and i don't use that browser very often.
