NAVMAN Posted May 1, 2005 CID Share Posted May 1, 2005 Hello All: Not sure if this should be in Dway forum but.... I am using Dway w DW6000. Testing with testymy.net and wdc.speakeasy.net, my dl speeds are comparable (800K or so), but I get vastly different ul speeds. Speakeasy gives me ul speeds anywhere from 20K to 600K depending on time of day. Testmy.net gives me ul speeds always below 100K. Any explanation? I have a feeling that the slower ul speeds are correct. NAVMAN
xs1 Posted May 1, 2005 CID Share Posted May 1, 2005 The difference is in the upload test sizes between the 2 sites. The results on Testmy are going to be more accurate if you choose a larger file, the larger your upload. On DirecWay, the 500 kb test is more then enough, on SE the upload tests are rather small , but most of the time, but do the trick. Also, wdc is going to be closer to you then testmy is... testmy is in texas, wdc is obviously in washington. Closer the server, the more burst is given in the results. edit : heres my results wdc.speakeasy.net 2005-05-01 08:06:29 EST: 5445 / 360 Your download speed : 5576700 bps, or 5445 kbps. A 680.7 KB/sec transfer rate. Your upload speed : 369230 bps, or 360 kbps. Testmy.net Your connection is: 5299 Kbps (about 5.3 Mbps) You downloaded at: 647 kB/s Your connection is: 377 Kbps (about 0.4 Mbps) You uploaded at: 46 kB/s
NAVMAN Posted May 1, 2005 Author CID Share Posted May 1, 2005 .s1, I don't know if I buy that. First, I went to LAX.speakeasy.net (in California): 2005-05-01 08:21:02 EST: 811 / 490 Your download speed : 831199 bps, or 811 kbps. A 101.4 KB/sec transfer rate. Your upload speed : 502197 bps, or 490 kbps. Then wdc.speakeasy.net (Washington, DC): 2005-05-01 08:26:37 EST: 838 / 349 Your download speed : 858679 bps, or 838 kbps. A 104.8 KB/sec transfer rate. Your upload speed : 358102 bps, or 349 kbps. Then testmy.net using 579K file: :::.. Upload Stats ..::: Connection is:: 82 Kbps about 0.1 Mbps (tested with 579 kB) Upload Speed is:: 10 kB/s Tested From:: https://testmy.net/ (main) Test Time:: Sun May 01 2005 08:29:15 GMT-0400 (Eastern Daylight Time) Bottom Line:: 1X faster than 56K 1MB upload in 102.4 sec Diagnosis: Awesome! 20% + : 95.24 % faster than the average for host (direcpc.com) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-MO21JGZEB BTW, I am in Northern Virginia, quite close to DC. 579K is pretty close to the 500K you say SE uses. I wonder if the ul protocol is the same for both. If SE uses fewer acknowledgements in their protocol, this might explain it (latency issues). xs1 Posted May 1, 2005 CID Share Posted May 1, 2005 Trust me, on direcway you are not uploading at 101 kbs lol. "Your upload speed : 502197 bps, or 490 Kbps." So your saying your sat. is uploading faster then my cable? O_o....
Aggr3 Posted May 1, 2005 CID Share Posted May 1, 2005 NAVMAN ..welcome to the forum... And you can always go to "Mydirecway" and test.....it'll show you have a 300-400kbps upload.... Yet when you try to send a 500k picture to someone and it takes 6 mins to upload....you do the math.. But hey.....believe any of them you wish.. NAVMAN Posted May 1, 2005 Author CID Share Posted May 1, 2005 .s1, no, I am saying that is what SE is reporting to me. Aggr3, thanks for your welcome. I do not "believe" SE or Dway, but I also have no cause to believe testmy.net. I simply don't know, and asked if there was an explanation for the disparity. My belief is that slow ul speeds have more to do with latency issues than with ul streaming limitations. For instance, checking my email with the POP3 protocol is painfully slow, not because of ul speed per se, but because of the telnet protocol used that requires a lot of server-client back and forth replies. I think that the successful use of VOIP also shows that Dway uploading can be fairly efficient if a streaming protocol is used. You can be certain that it does not take 6 minutes to ul 500K of VOIP packets the same way as it takes 6 min to ul a 500K file. xs1 Posted May 1, 2005 CID Share Posted May 1, 2005 The only other thing could be the way java tests report it. Im guessing the direcway testing is also java?
Slower Posted May 1, 2005 CID Share Posted May 1, 2005 The only other thing could be the way java tests report it. Im guessing the DirecWay testing is also java? That's exactly right. The Java batch reaction will skew the results up higher by a lot on test sites that are not set up for Java. If you have a dialup backup, which most of us do with DW,

Slower Posted May 1, 2005 CID Share Posted May 1, 2005 Believe it or not this is dialup at speakeasy on the West coast.
