You need at least truely 256 ram for the dw6000 - regardless of what they say 3. Signal strength is truely 10 points less then you control panel says - the bottoming out of signal strength is 44 NOT 34 anything under 44 and your direcway will not work. 4. During the year your dw6000 will run better than others. -reason i am not sure but seems like direcway gives extra power to satellites at different times and then rotates that power throughout the year. - this is just a guess at what i have observed. 5. Make sure you are not running a bunch of programs in your startup. Just run the basic 8 to 10 that you need ANYTHING running in background will slow you up badly. 6. Dw6000 runs best with a fresh installed computer and ALL spyware removed etc.. 7. Your mhz speed on your computer (if you have nothing running in background and other programs) doesnt effect your basic dw6000 surfing or downloading speed - Fox ex a 3.0 mhz or a 400mhz computer will download at the exact smae speed. 8. REGARDLESS of what your download box says with explorer 6.0 (if it says 200 busst then drops to 117 etc.) it is off. Doesnt matter if it says 300 then drops off to 109 - it is all the same rate) explorer 5.0 shows the actual speed more acurately. 9. MAKE SURE that your dw6000 dish is clear on ALL sides top bottom soide to side at about 10 degrees with NO obstructions - ie limbs leaves (i had some problems with leaves on a limb just to the left of my dish's pointing up to the sky in the evenings in simmer the leaves flipped over and i really did get some signal flux) so 10-12 degrees CLEAR on all sides is important. 10. Make sure your proxy setting are correct it is a 200kbps difference. 11. If you DO have an ongoing problem diredway WILL credit you that month for the problem - Yes they do do it because I have had it done. 12. BE SURE YOUR CROSS POL IS NEVER FAILING. 14. Fog and Thick clouds are more deadly then rain and snow on the dw6000 Even THICK patchy clouds will stop your signal. 15. If your Dw6000 is not working the #1 cure is time. Most often if it is a sporadic problem there is nothing you can do but wait. good luck all.

budbem Posted May 6, 2005 Author CID Share Posted May 6, 2005 you tested a 896 with the medium and 920 with the largest - i think that proves my point - that is vertually the same speed - medium test is all you need to do to see if you are running badly
php Posted May 6, 2005 CID Share Posted May 6, 2005 typically, a speed test has to be running for at least 8 seconds for accurate results... thats why the test on the DirecWay website is so off...
NeeDSpeeD Posted May 7, 2005 CID Share Posted May 7, 2005 I think both are very good points. However, with Direcway and latency issues, would the larger download (2992) not open up the door for more packet losses, network congestion, etc. When you do a speed test, try and watch your file transfer speed at the same time (if of course you have a program that allows this). With Direcway you get bursting. I have had bursts up to 2717 kbps. Thats what I like to see. Unfortunately with packet loss do to latency, it can drag down your official download speed or at least thats what I thought. Could be wrong (wouldn't be the 1st, lol). Upload speed can do a number also, and I know for a fact, ever since I've had Direcway, the upload stinks!
php Posted May 7, 2005 CID Share Posted May 7, 2005 bursts arent accurate measures of your speed, i have had a 5MB/s burst before... latency doesnt cause packet loss...
NeeDSpeeD Posted May 7, 2005 CID Share Posted May 7, 2005 Like I said, I could be wrong. Maybe I shouldn't have mentioned the two together (packet loss, latency) but they do affect speed. By the way, did this 5 meg burst come while using a DW6000, consumer account or something else. Not sure what kind of gear your using. php Posted May 7, 2005 CID Share Posted May 7, 2005 yea, it was a DW6000 CE... it only happened once though latency does affect speed, but our systems are still capable of much higher speeds... packet loss also affects speed, but i have never had any packet loss... Slower Posted May 8, 2005 CID Share Posted May 8, 2005 Measuring speed with short files is like tracking the speed of a bullet. Do you judge the rate right after it comes out of the barrel or use the full distance to the target for your speed determination?

McKrassler Posted May 29, 2005 CID Share Posted May 29, 2005 hopefully your right. Ive had direcway less than 48 hours and im already tempted to make the dish into my new outdoor shit house. If I try downloading anything over 20Mb, it will start fast, then slow down to a grueling pace and time out around 17-22mb completed. Increasing your signal strength any more will not
Bird Fan Posted May 29, 2005 CID Share Posted May 29, 2005 There is actually a new sattelite company that launches it's service in June...
