Guest Kilroy44 Posted July 4, 2005 CID Share Posted July 4, 2005 Hi I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on how to get the maximum speeds out of Bittorrent. I use bittornado and I was wondering about recommended settings for like connection type cable fast/cable slow/dial up/ and also optimal upload settings for a 6mb 768 connection as far as upload rate and number of uploaders. I have it running through ports 50000-60000 because I heard those were good ports. Im only wondering this because the top speed i have ever gotten on bt is like 200k and that was like for 3 seconds yet I hear about people with the same connection getting 300+ any help would be appreciated thanks

Guest Kilroy44 Posted July 5, 2005 CID Share Posted July 5, 2005 any advice for getting top speeds out of bittorrent because i cant get over 200k
wingzero2309 Posted July 5, 2005 CID Share Posted July 5, 2005 Well, if you are behind a router, you will get faster speeds if u do port forwarding for the ports that your bittorrent client uses. Also, your BT speeds would probably also get faster if you allowed bittorrent full access to the internet thru your firewall (if you have a firewall)
Mactron Posted July 5, 2005 CID Share Posted July 5, 2005 I have no idea where you got those port numbers from, but I run 6881-6999. A couple other things, you are aware that the number of seeders and their upload speed is crucial to your download speeds!? Also lately lots of seeders are ignoring or slowing their upload to anyone that has their upload choked back. I aways download at my full speed ~360k with plenty of seeders around. HTH

HTH 6881-6999 are the default ports. But some programs allow u to change port numbers. I, too, am using 50000-60000 because IF an ISP does block bittorrent ports, they'll most likely block 6881-6999. BTW, im using the bittorrent client called ABC
Guest Kilroy44 Posted July 6, 2005 CID Share Posted July 6, 2005 K ill try to forwarding different ports does anyone have upload recommedations for comcast 6mb/768 as far as rate and number of uploaders and does the default port range have an advantage to the 5000-6000
RTB Posted July 6, 2005 CID Share Posted July 6, 2005 I think that 200k/s isn't that bad, as my BT speed never goes above 100kB/s. If you're really lucky, you ISP doesn't cap/throttle BT speed at all. With a lil' less luck they block/throttle the default ports. If you're unlucky (like me) they use packet shaping to kill BT traffic. It's suggested that you use a total of 10 - 20 ports for BT, opening up 50000-60000 is rather extreme. I use 59960-60000. organ_shifter Posted July 6, 2005 CID Share Posted July 6, 2005 I usually keep my ports at the default settings (which are ports 50000-60000). If you have SP2 installed, you'll get slower speeds. I couldn't take it as my speeds wouldn't get over 50KB/s. The fix that is supposed to correct the number of open connections allowed by SP2 didn't help my speed at all. It was too frustrating, so I went back to SP1. I use Bit Torrent U-0.8.5 (UPnP and Fast Resume BT Client with Multilanguage). It's one of the first alternatives to the original BitTorrent and is a couple years old. Some trackers don't support it anymore through certain protocols, but I use it whenever it's accepted (lots of trackers stll support it). If not, I use BitTornado also. Well seeded torrents produce speeds like this without SP2 (finished in 36 minutes 34 seconds):
Guest Kilroy44 Posted July 7, 2005 CID Share Posted July 7, 2005 SO is it worth installing the p2p fix, does anyone know if it really boosts bittorrent speeds and also is unlimited the best setting for a 6mb/768 connection?
organ_shifter Posted July 9, 2005 CID Share Posted July 9, 2005 SO is it worth installing the p2p fix, does anyone know if it really boosts bittorrent speeds and also is unlimited the best setting for a 6mb/768 connection? When downloading, dsl/cable fast is your best bet. Just set the Max uploads to 10 and leave the Upload rate at 40kB/s (50kB/s wouldn't hurt either). You can still surf the net in a timely fashion, plus get great speeds on the torrent. If you set the upload too high, your download speed will suffer. Usually, 80% of your total upload is the sweet spot.
