When I cut the cable and went to Fios they told me that their engineers were working on an upgrade to compete with Verizon.  I think it's going to be a while before they get these kinds of speeds though.

DOCSIS 2.0 can achieve speeds far greater than that right now, but many regions that cable networks service are still operating at DOCSIS (1.0 - 1.1). Certain areas are 2.0 certified, but only a handful compared to the large numbers that aren't.

Adelphia @ (16000/2000) & Cox @ (15000/2000) have already proven that cable can hold it's own very well on a DOCSIS 2.0 infrastructure.

Comcast is planning to skip a full DOCSIS 2.0 upgrade and move directly to DOCSIS 3.0. :) They claim to be striving to give their customers 200Mbps down. :)

I can assure you that whatever speed the cable companies are able to squeeze out of that copper wire will be easily topped by Verizon over fiber.  Long after the cable companies have eek-ed the last drop of speed out of copper using whatever method they choose, fiber will still be lightyears (pardon the pun) ahead.
