resopalrabotnick Posted September 22, 2005 CID Share Posted September 22, 2005 what's strange about that? that's 6 km. on good lines 10 to 12 is possible easily.
RJ44 Posted September 22, 2005 CID Share Posted September 22, 2005 what's strange about that? that's 6 km. on good lines 10 to 12 is possible easily. If he has BellSouth, it's strange because lines over 18kf don't qualify for DSL.
resopalrabotnick Posted September 22, 2005 CID Share Posted September 22, 2005 carried awayu or not i have installed dsl at 768/128 at a cable length of 10.5k. and that was not terribly unusual, although we did measure each candidate individually for line quality at distances greater than 5km simply to avoid the embarassment of going out and setting it up only to find something wrong. Interesting that y'all would do that, it doesn't seem very cost effective to send a tech out to test each loop over 5km. BellSouth just draws a line there and if it's over won't sell it. Who were you working for (or who are you working for) that does that?
resopalrabotnick Posted September 23, 2005 CID Share Posted September 23, 2005 deutsche (that would be german) telekom. and of course we didn't drive out. every first phone jack in the house (at least those installed by a tech or at least purchased at the telekom store) has a resistor installed in it that crosses the two wires. it does not affect line quality one bit, (i forget the resistance, but it is high) but it allows the switching equipment to run a test on the line for diagnostics. if that comes back within the parameters necessary for dsl, the customer in question gets a go. at one time those that were borderline could opt to get a slower package to get anything at all, but corp hq put an end to that citing billing and contract issues. blah. RJ44 Posted September 23, 2005 CID Share Posted September 23, 2005 Very cool, someone was thinking ahead when they made that decision. These long loops you mention, do you use a lot of 26 gauge wire or is it mostly larger gauge?
resopalrabotnick Posted September 23, 2005 CID Share Posted September 23, 2005 the older wires are .6 mm2 copper. at one point they tried to save money by going to .4 mm2 aluminum for a few years. works for pots, but sucks for people that want dsl.they are back to copper since then, but they went to .4 copper before going back to .6 copper. lines with mixed edia are really bad for dsl, lol. i don't work there any more, i did a 3 year job training there. was cool, gave a lot of insight since you get passed around the different departments.
