cholla Posted September 24, 2005 CID Share Posted September 24, 2005 Isn't 56k supposed to be hard capped at 53.x Kbps no matter what? You are correct 53.3 is what everything says. But here is a link to an old topic & some of the tests I posted.I no longer get these speeds I think CA3LE did some work on the test after that it has been more like it should be for me since.I don't know how ROM-DOS got a faster score. You can't get that type score with a cached test if you cache the test the score is a lot faster on even 56K .http://www.testmy.net/forum/index.php?topic=1739.msg18292#msg18292'>http://www.testmy.net/forum/index.php?topic=1739.msg18292#msg18292 Download Stats ..::: Connection is:: 76 Kbps about 0.1 Mbps (tested with 579 KB) Download Speed is:: 9 kB/s Tested From:: http://www.testmy.net/ Bottom Line:: 1 times faster than 56K you can download 1MB in 113.78 second(s) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/cgi-bin/get.cgi?Test_ID=UQ4N5IAY9 some slower the second time :::.. ROM-DOS Posted September 24, 2005 Author CID Share Posted September 24, 2005 NoCharge is free to most Wastington State and there's an East coast server, too. I don't think I'm close to any phone co. and you should see the crazy phone lines I've got streched all over ~ I've got a 10 foot curry-cord going from my catch-a-call to my puter - it's only a two foot distance - lol - and a 20 foot cord from the wall jack to the catch-a-call. I'm cheap!! anyway ~ what I was thinkin' ~ is that XP and most of the internet is pretty much set-up for High-Speed - so why not trick it a little - think I'll raise my RWIN 128480 and see what happens. I use to have Comcast HS and tweaked it to 5.5Mbps at a 4Mbps connection. I'll probably go with DSL Q-West sometime soon ~ miss my on-line gaming, too much!! cholla Posted September 24, 2005 CID Share Posted September 24, 2005 ROM-DOS: I checking out some of your settings it did speed up the SmarTest for me.On the larger test about the same. The reason I chose the 128480 RWIN is it shows the unscaled RWIN as 64240 which is as large as you can use with an RWIN based on 1460 MSS .The unscaled RWIN has to be under 65535 or it will scale again. btw I called my phone company to find my distance they sat it 26600 ft from the telco. You probably just have to call your s & ask the distance.I used the CO finder at Broadbandreports it says 16480 ft but SBC should know the distance of their line to me . ROM-DOS Posted September 24, 2005 Author CID Share Posted September 24, 2005 as for Comcast ~ I got finacially challenged ~ and basically I was only using it for playing Joint Opts on-line. . . .I've only noticed a 2-3 second difference on loading pages - mostly with the graphic download part - but, what's a few more seconds - lol cholla ~ what's your TcpWindowSize? and LargeBufferSize ~ mines 40960 like I said ~ I just added zero's to the buffer counts and sizes and of course, I've done all the Registry tweaks, too. ROM-DOS Posted September 25, 2005 Author CID Share Posted September 25, 2005 yes, this is with 56k 'dail-up' and FREE internet connect with ~ NoCharge I've got Windows XP firewall running and 7 virus scanners a scanning spybot teatimer and ad-aware ad-watch and spywareblaster and trojan guarder also running ~ plus DU meter ~ lol the faster speed (I think) I get with 'load with no progress bar' is how fast I can load 'without' graphics otherwise, pages load really fast ~ only a 2 -3 second difference waiting for graphics to load - on some heavy graphic pages ~ sometimes. [move]I just like this feature ~ lol [/move]
cholla Posted September 25, 2005 CID Share Posted September 25, 2005 ROM-DOS : How do you do on this NDT test they always show me fast they should show you faster. http://nitro.ucsc.edu/ My theory is that you are close to a telco terminal & your ISP.Then your ISP accelerates the connection once it gets to them Like maybe the ISP uses FIOS.So only your signal to & from them is on copper & dial-up.What kind of PC do you have because a faster PC would explain part of the faster speed. I think you are getting the fast speed I just would like to know how. maybe its cached.... just really poorly
