On a good day, I get 1.2 Mbps, on a bad day like today, forget about it. I'm less than 5000 feet from my CO but I could be 100 feet away and this is as good as it gets. Some Cavtel customers I know in other areas get as fast as 15Mbps but I'm not none off them. As the Cavtel support rep says, "we're a best effort service. You pay the same price if we deliver 200 Mbps or 20Mbps" ... I'm not one of the lucky ones and will leave Cavtel as soon as I can. I can't recommend the service because you won't know what you'll get until you get it. I'm happy to hear that some of you are getting good speeds. Today, their e-mail was down for at least 8 hours and any mail sent to me was bounced back.
chooch Posted July 16, 2007 CID Share Posted July 16, 2007 One thing I forgot to mention.... a user mentioned his CO have NVL2 equipment.... my CO is the same from what I gather as, according to Cavtel, I was signed up for "NVL2 service" and that is why I'm capped at 2.0Mbps. I was advised to call customer service and ask for a different CO if possible or if they could upgrade me somehow. I'm paying $14.99 a month on introductory, but I would definitely NOT pay the regular $24.99 for this!
PastorP Posted July 16, 2007 CID Share Posted July 16, 2007 Hay for all of you who are having problems with your download and upload speeds. Here is a little trick we found and it has been working great for us. You need to download Drtcp. Once you download that you need to set up your Tcp Ip in DRtcp with this. Your recieve windows put in 32767 then down on the bottom put in the MTU window 1300. That should help if you are using a Router.
chooch Posted July 16, 2007 CID Share Posted July 16, 2007 Hey, PastorP! Excellent program! I tried it, along with others, before Cavtel told me that I was spinning my wheels and waisting my time for nothing as I'm capped at 2Mbps and 1.3Mbps is my fastest reasonable speed according to Cavalier. DrTCP didn't do anything for me but I hear others have had great results. While I was driving myself nuts thinking I could get more than 1.3Mbps with Cavtel's "UP TO 10Mbps" sales gimmick, here are some great DSL tip sites that I found that have other good tips as well: http://www.homephonewiring.com/materials.html This site gives many good tips on optimized phone wiring for DSL. I was going to drop $44.00 on the ASDL2+ and POTS splitter as my wiring is "home run" and I can create a dedicated DSL jack. I did some experimenting, such as running straight from my NID to the Cavtel router, to see if speed would increase. Didn't make a difference when I reconnected my phones into the wiring so I saved my money. I would buy this splitter if I had real "high speed" ADSL2+ service with digital TV for it would save $$$$ on not having to have a filter on each phone and prevent "mirroring" and whanot when the DSL signal is fed to all jacks .... and wall plate ADSL filters aren't easy to find and they cost $15.00 when I do find them so this little $44 jewel would save money if you have many phone extensions in your home (four or more), which can degrade DSL performance. http://cable-dsl.home.att.net/ Seems to be a good site for non-nonsense discussion on what will -- and what won't -- increase DSL speed. http://www.dslreports.com/faq/bellsouth Geared to BellSouth but has some excellent, general DSL discussions. Note that BellSouth is a different type of network than Cavtel (PPPoE versus TCPIP) and so some discussions, like changing the network MTU settings in a router, may not apply. chooch Posted July 16, 2007 CID Share Posted July 16, 2007 I noticed, by the way, that Cavalier is ripping fast for me today... a whopping 1.3Mbps. This is the absolute fastest that I can get no matter what I do with tweaks, phone wiring tricks, nothing.... This is a tough apple to bite since I got spoiled with 5Mbps when I was with RCN. Downloads I do, such as Linux ISO's, take over an hour now. But, I am getting $14.99 worth as Verizon wants that for 768K. :::.. zalternate Posted May 12, 2009 CID Share Posted May 12, 2009 Telus in British Columbia and Alberta has the 15Mbps DSL speed packages now, which run about 13Mbps. But I think that the 15Mbps package is tied close to fiber and then is copper to home. Uploads though are only about 800Kbps for all packages.
