If you have a win9x boot disk with fdisk on it, try fdisk /mbr Yea my friend had partially installed Redhat Linux awhile back,and nowhe had used partitionMagic to take it out of the hardrive.Then he restarted,and everything was working fine,now this happened last night,and I cant boot at all So yea I think its something with the boot record.How would I go about and correcting this,especially since I dont have my copy of the XP cd? That should take care of the bios message. If you save your settings but continue to get the message, try clearing your cmos. How old is the cmos battery? When they go bad, it screws the system up in a way that makes you think the problem is bigger than what it is. You don't have to lose all you information if you have enough space left on the drive. That will allow you to create a new partition for a fresh copy of Windows completely separate from your current info. During installation, and if the system detects the current OS correctly, you will have the option to repair the current version of Windows by restoring damaged system files that are the cause of you not getting in. When prompted, you will have to proceed as if you are trying to install a fresh copy of Windows in order for the system to inform you that it has detected another copy of Windows. Don't mistake this for the Recovery Console which will be one of the options given. Before you get that far, you will first have an option that will give you access to the drive through DOS (Recovery Console). You will be able to log into the current OS and execute various commands. Pressing "R" will get you to the login prompt. Once logged on, you will be given the opportunity to write a new MBR (Master Boot Record), copy/delete files, run chkdsk (Check Disk), or carry out a host of other actions. Typing in "help" from the DOS prompt will display a list of what you can do. This can all be done from a Windows XP disc. Hope that helps out.
